Former NFL receiver Keary Colbert has been named the new receivers coach at Georgia State University.
Colbert, 30, was a second-round pick of the Panthers out of USC in 2004, but he could never separate at the next level. He was most recently with the Chiefs in 2011. Colbert also played for the Lions, Seahawks, and Broncos in 2008. Mon, Mar 4, 2013 07:51:00 PM

Chiefs waived WR Keary Colbert.

Colbert was operating as Kansas City's third receiver earlier in the season, but had recently lost the job to rookie Jonathan Baldwin and has been a healthy scratch. He's got a spot on the USC coaching staff waiting for him if he wants to resume coaching. At 29, Colbert's playing career is probably over.

Chiefs declared WR Keary Colbert, S Jon McGraw, LB Demorrio Williams, OT Steve Maneri, DE Glenn Dorsey, TE Anthony Becht, and DE Brandon Bair inactive for Week 11 against New England.

Colbert has ceded third receiver duties to Jonathan Baldwin, and now appears to have fallen behind even Jerheme Urban and Jeremy Horne. Dorsey is out with a knee injury. Williams and McGraw came into the game banged up.

Keary Colbert made the Chiefs' final roster.

Colbert beat long odds after falling out of the league last season and accepting a coaching job at USC. He'll open the season no higher than fifth on the depth chart. Colbert hasn't topped 500 yards in a season since his rookie year in 2004.

Reporting from Chiefs camp,'s Peter King gives WR Keary Colbert nearly a 50-50 shot of making the final roster.

We're not buying it. Timing is everything, and Colbert missed his window in Kansas City by a year. The Chiefs are much deeper now at receiver than they were last August. Colbert would have to beat out Todd Haley favorite Jerheme Urban -- who also plays special teams -- for a roster spot.

Chiefs signed WR Keary Colbert, formerly of the Sacramento Lions.

Colbert began the year on the Lions' UFL roster after spending the 2010 season as the USC Trojans' assistant tight ends coach. Once a promising-looking prospect defeating single-team coverage opposite Steve Smith in Carolina, Colbert hasn't been able to separate from defensive backs since 2004.

Free agent Keary Colbert has resurfaced with the Sacramento Lions of the United Football League.

Colbert spent the 2010 season as the USC Trojans' assistant tight ends coach, but declared himself ready for a comeback attempt in February. Now 29 years old with below-average athleticism in his prime, Colbert is unlikely to return to the NFL as an impact contributor. He might get a look in a camp.

Former Lions and Panthers WR Keary Colbert is leaving the USC football staff in hopes of resurrecting his NFL career.

We're not betting on him. Colbert had an impressive rookie season (47-754-16.0-5) starting in place of an injured Steve Smith in 2004, but was a completely ineffective player thereafter. Turning 29 in May, Colbert would have to improve his speed and overall athleticism to truly help a team.

Lions released WR Keary Colbert, TE/DE Sean Conover, OG Milford Brown, TE Carson Butler, S Calvin Lowry, and CB Ramzee Robinson.

Colbert still can't separate and dropped too many passes in preseason to beat out Dennis Northcutt. The Lions are going thin on defensive backs.

Lions receiver Keary Colbert dropped three passes in Saturday's preseason game against the Falcons.

This will get you cut really quick. All three were from Matthew Stafford, whose completion rate would've been a studly 71.4% had Colbert done what he was supposed to. Instead, Stafford finished up 7-for-14 passing.

Lions re-signed WR Keary Colbert.

Colbert, 27, had 47 catches as a rookie in 2004, the year Steve Smith missed all but one game with a broken leg. Colbert has since struggled to separate in numerous locations, be it due to weak burst off the line and/or route running. He's a poor fit for new Lions coordinator Scott Linehan's vertical offense and probably won't make the team.

The Lions will work out free agent Keary Colbert on Wednesday.

Colbert finished 2008 on Detroit's roster, but wasn't re-signed. He drew light interest from the Chiefs in March after catching seven passes last year.

In addition to S Keith Davis and DB Travis Daniels, the Chiefs are showing interest in free agent Keary Colbert.

As long as they don't pay as much as Mike Shanahan did last year. Seattle also gave up a fifth-round pick for Colbert in-season. The mysteriously hot item produced zero catches for Denver and just seven as a Seahawk.

Lions signed WR Keary Colbert, formerly of the Seahawks.

Detroit gets him for around $150K to play four games, while Seattle GM Tim Ruskell gave up a fifth-round pick to have Colbert catch seven balls in as many weeks. He might be used to block in some sets down the stretch.

Seahawks released WR Keary Colbert.

The Seahawks gave up a fifth-round pick to get Colbert from the Broncos when they were desperate for healthy bodies at receiver, but he caught just seven passes in seven games and fell behind Koren Robinson on the depth chart. Colbert showed promise as a rookie in 2004, but is now clinging to NFL life.
