Free agent DL Robaire Smith is hopeful of re-signing with the Browns.

GM Tom Heckert said before the lockout the Browns would consider re-signing Smith if his injured spine checked out, which it has. Smith is just two years removed from an excellent 2009, but coming off injury and entering his age-33 season, he'd be a gamble for a rebuilding team.

Free agent DL Robaire Smith (back) has been medically cleared to resume his playing career.

Neck and back injuries are always concerning for 33-year-old linemen, and Smith missed all but five games last season with a bruise on his spinal cord. The good news is that it was only a bruise. Smith won't be back in Cleveland in 2011, but is still plenty capable of helping a team in a rotation at end or tackle. Quietly, Smith was one of the NFL's top 3-4 ends in 2009.

Browns DE Robaire Smith is confident that he will play again after suffering a season-ending back injury in October.

Smith was highly effective in Cleveland's 3-4 defense before suffering a back injury in Week 5. The 33-year-old is a free agent in 2011, and will need to prove he's fully healthy before anyone will make an investment in him.

Browns placed DE Robaire Smith (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Evidently, his second opinion didn't go so well. With Smith done for the year, Brian Schaefering enters the starting lineup on a permanent basis. The extent of Smith's injury is not yet known, but this was about the worst possible time for it to happen. The 33-year-old is a free agent in 2011.

Browns DE Robaire Smith will get second opinion on his back injury but is expected to be placed on injured reserve.

Assuming he does go on injured reserve, the Browns will miss Smith, who is a much better player than his backup, Brian Schaefering. He could be placed on IR as early as Wednesday.

Browns coach Eric Mangini revealed Monday that DE Robaire Smith (back) is in danger of missing the rest of the season.

Smith was inactive for Week 6, and it sounds like he may need surgery on his injured back. One of the most underrated 3-4 defensive ends in the game, Smith has been replaced by underwhelming Brian Schaefering to this point.

Browns DL Robaire Smith (back) has been ruled out for Week 6 against Pittsburgh.

Reserve DLs Ahtyba Rubin and Brian Schaefering will share snaps while Smith's back heals. Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall ranks as Rotoworld's No. 8 RB for Week 6. Strangely, the 23rd-ranked Browns run defense, allowing 120.0 YPG, is the only unit in the NFL that has yet to surrender a rushing TD thus far in 2010.

Commissioner Roger Goodell attended Browns camp on Thursday, but had no update on possible league discipline for the offseason gun-related arrests of DEs Robaire Smith and Shaun Rogers.

Goodell indicated the league is still investigating. "It's a clear mistake," he said. "It is a violation of law. It's the kind of judgments that we have to make sure we do a better job of avoiding." Goodell did say he is aware of Rogers' recent good-samaritan move to expose a DUI driver on an Ohio highway.

Browns DE Robaire Smith was charged with possession of a firearm in a commercial airport on Thursday.

The charge stems from a November 2009 incident when Smith allegedly had a loaded Belgium 5.7 caliber handgun in his carry-on luggage. If this story sounds familiar, it's because Shaun Rogers was busted for having a loaded gun at an airport in April. Interestingly, Rogers and Smith were traveling together that day. Smith's lawyer claims that the NFL has already disciplined Smith for the incident.

Browns DL Robaire Smith (Achilles' tendon) has been limited to individual drills early in camp.

Smith is now 32, and he'll almost certainly lose a step coming off Achilles' tendon surgery. He's expected to get a serious push from Eric Mangini favorite Kenyon Coleman.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer expects Browns RE Robaire Smith to lose his starting job to newly acquired Kenyon Coleman.

Smith is 31 and coming off a torn Achilles'. There's an outside chance he'll be cut this summer. The Browns will rotate so much that there won't be any IDPs to target here, other than maybe LE Corey Williams in deep leagues.

Smith missed most of last season after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in Week 2. If he's healthy by training camp, the Browns feel like he can be their No. 2 defensive lineman behind Shaun Rogers.
