Tangible proof that coach Jim Schwartz is making progress with the Lions' roster. Last year's upgrade is no longer needed with Corey Williams on board to go with Sammie Hill. Now 37 years old and good for just 20-25 snaps per game, Jackson will move on to the next team desperate for a nose tackle.

Roger Goodell said a decision on Jackson's appeal will come within the next couple of weeks. Even at age 36 and a shell of his former self, Jackson would be some help for the Lions' problematic run defense.

Lions DT Grady Jackson and Lions WR Bryant Johnson opened camp on the NFL list for non-football injuries and illnesses.

Johnson has an "undisclosed health problem" that is apparently unrelated to his knee injury. Jackson signed a big deal this offseason, but he hasn't practiced a lick since. Counting on him to play a big role is risky business for Detroit.

The 36-year-old Jackson underwent surgery in February and has yet to participate in on-field workouts with the team. Jackson is expected to get back on the field for training camp, but he's still in danger of missing four games for his StarCaps suspension.

Jackson, suspended last season for taking the weight-loss supplement StarCaps, appealed the ban but has yet to hear back from the NFL. The Lions shockingly give the 36-year-old a three-year, $8 million contract in March. That signing would look even worse if Jackson isn't available until Week 5.

Javorris was invited to Lions camp for a tryout last weekend, but he failed a physical due to a wrist injury. The Savannah State star turned the gun on himself after shooting his girlfriend, and he's currently hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Jackson started 15 games for Atlanta last season and is big (6'2/345). The Falcons ranked 25th against the run, however, and yielded nearly five yards per carry against, the 28th worst mark in the league. Jackson, 36, adds next to nothing as a pass rusher and is unlikely to make a difference in Detroit.
