The Green Bay Packers travel to San Francisco in Week 4 to face the struggling offense of the 49ers.
San Francisco is last in the NFL in scoring offense, averaging a paltry 15.0 points per game this season. Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers offense are also coming off a terrible offensive performance against Arizona in Week 3, where they registered just 156 total yards and turned the ball over four times. The Green Bay D/ST has not been the most productive fantasy defense so far this season, but this group is certainly worth a look as a top-12 option in Week 4 with a solid matchup. Oct 2 - 10:57 PM

Green Bay DC Dom Capers has used multiple defensive schemes like the "Bear" defense to help deal with personnel changes due to injuries.

"You better have enough different packages because you might have to put different combinations of people out there. That's why you've got to have a large menu to pick from," Capers said about his defense. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal's Bob McGinn noted that the Packers "Bear" defense has held opposing quarterbacks to 2-8 passing and just eight yards on 12 dropbacks this season. With defensive injuries mounting, the Green Bay defense will likely keep a wide array of defensive packages at their fingertips. The Packers D/ST is a mid-tier Week 3 fantasy option against Kansas City.

Rookie linebacker Jake Ryan will see an increase in playing time in Week 2 with ILB Sam Barrington (foot) out for the season.

Green Bay linebacker Nate Palmer will also fill the void left by Barrington, but the rookie will have plenty of chances to contribute against the defending NFC champions. LB Julius Peppers spoke about the situation saying, "I feel like they’re coming along well. We’re asking a lot of those guys, with a little bit of inexperience, a little bit of playing time." The inexperience at linebacker could provide Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch with a big opportunity for production, as Green Bay allowed Matt Forte to run wild for 141 yards in Week 1. The Green Bay D/ST is a risky Week 2 start in fantasy leagues.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tabbed the Packers run defense as the key to Week 1 success for Green Bay.

The report identified late-season improvement from the Green Bay run defense as a big factor in the strong finish to the 2014 season for the Packers. Now, DC Dom Capers will be tasked with carrying over that success into the 2015 season, which starts with a matchup against the Chicago Bears. New Chicago head coach John Fox will likely build the Bears offense around Matt Forte and the running game, so success from the Green Bay defensive front will be important this week. The Green Bay D/ST will be a top-ten Week 1 option among fantasy defenses as they travel to Soldier Field.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette noted linebackers Jayrone Elliott and Jake Ryan as players who stood out in Week 4 of the preseason.

Elliott and Ryan combined for eight total tackles in the Packers 38-10 win over the New Orleans Saints as the 2015 preseason came to an end. DC Dom Capers' defense struggled against the run last season and could use the contributions of both these linebackers alongside Clay Matthews. The Green Bay D/ST has a nice Week 1 matchup ahead as they are set to face the Chicago Bears.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel expects the Green Bay defensive communication to be tested against Philadelphia in Week 3 of the preseason.

The Eagles famously run their offense at a speedy clip, so Dom Capers will have his defense focused on communication in between snaps. It will be an interesting test for the Packers defense, who will be a decent Week 1 fantasy option as they travel to Soldier Field to take on Jay Cutler and the Bears, who turned the ball over 29 times (sixth in the NFL) in 2014.
