Ravens signed CB Chris Johnson, formerly of the Raiders.

The 33-year-old finished last season on the reserve/non-football injury list following the shooting death of his sister by her estranged boyfriend. He's been out of football ever since. Johnson will add depth with Jimmy Smith nursing a groin injury.

Free agent CB Chris Johnson is scheduled to visit the Jets on Monday.

Released by Oakland in March, Johnson hasn't generated much interest on the open market. If signed by New York, he would provide depth behind Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, and Kyle Wilson. Dealing with a hamstring injury and a family tragedy, the 33-year-old Johnson appeared in just one game after Week 3 last season.

Raiders released CB Chris Johnson.

Johnson's $3.5 million base salary was a prohibitive number for a cornerback going on age 33 who was really little more than an Al Davis favorite. The move leaves 2011 third-round pick Demarcus Van Dyke as the most experienced cornerback on the Raiders' roster. Johnson started 29 games over the 2008-2011 seasons. He may resurface elsewhere at a much cheaper rate.

The Raiders are expected to release CB Chris Johnson if he doesn't accept a pay reduction.

Johnson turns 33 in September, is owed a $3.5 million salary, and has been cooked in coverage several years running. He could get released and fall out of the league, so it would be in Johnson's best interest to take a large pay cut.

Raiders placed RCB Chris Johnson on the reserve/non-football illness list, ending his season.

The move appears to be related to the family tragedy Johnson has been dealing with, and not an illness. Johnson left the Raiders in Week 14 to be with his family after the murder of his sister, but did return for practice this week. Limited to only four games by injury, Johnson had 14 tackles and zero interceptions.

Raiders RCB Chris Johnson rejoined his teammates in Thursday's practice.

Johnson left the team to be with his family after his sister was killed and his mother shot by a 46-year-old man in Texas. The Raiders expect him to play against the Packers this week.

Raiders RCB Chris Johnson has left the team to be with his family after his sister was shot dead and his mother wounded

The sister was reportedly shot "several times" after an argument over a child in Dallas. The accused, Eugene Esters, also shot 53-year-old Della Johnson, but she is expected to survive. Esters was arrested at the scene and booked both on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Raiders coach Hue Jackson says he expects Johnson to return to the team for Sunday's game.

Raiders CB Chris Johnson left Sunday's Week 3 game against the Jets in the first quarter with a hamstring injury.

He was replaced by rookie Chimdi Chekwa, and did not return. The Raiders are extremely thin in their secondary with CB DeMarcus Van Dyke inactive and FS Michael Huff sidelined with a head injury.

Raiders CB Chris Johnson resumed practicing Tuesday.

Johnson underwent a mysterious minor surgery two weeks ago. He was "going hard" through drills Tuesday, so expect to see him in the lineup for the season opener. If that means fewer snaps for Demarcus Van Dyke, it's good news for Raiders fans.

Raiders LCB Chris Johnson is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery Wednesday for an undisclosed injury.

Johnson was practicing at the beginning of the week, so he must have gone down very recently. The Raiders are being tight-lipped about injuries in camp. With Johnson out, raw rookie Demarcus Van Dyke is running with the starting defense. Coach Hue Jackson says Johnson should be back before Week 1.

Chris Johnson is the favorite to take over as the Raiders' starting left cornerback.

Johnson projects as the starter opposite Stanford Routt. It's not a lock as Johnson has performed average at best in recent seasons, but he'll only have to beat out the likes of Jeremy Ware, Walter McFadden, DeMarcus Van Dyke, and Chimdi Chekwa. The Raiders are clearly going to miss Nnamdi Asomugha.

Updating previous items, the Raiders have not released CB Chris Johnson or RG Cooper Carlisle.

NFL Network erroneously reported that the two players had been released, but both took part in training camp practice on Thursday. They may be cut later on, though. Both have relatively large salaries in comparison to their recent production levels. In Oakland, of course, they're both penciled in as starters.

Raiders released CB Chris Johnson.

It's a little surprising that the Raiders would move on from Johnson when they're set to lose free agent Nnamdi Asomugha. Perhaps it's a sign that the Raiders have something up their sleeve at corner, such as going after Antonio Cromartie.
Thu, Jul 28, 2011 07:31:00 PM

Raiders CB Chris Johnson (groin) has been ruled out for Sunday's Week 12 game.

The second best Chris Johnson in the league has played the nickel corner and backup to starter Nnamdi Asomugha. Michael Huff could see some time at cornerback in addition to rookie Jeremy Ware.
