The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans are interested in Steelers LBs coach Keith Butler for their defensive-coordinator vacancy.
New Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt tried to pry Butler away from the Steelers several times while Whisenhunt was in Arizona, but Pittsburgh denied him each time. Butler may be the DC-in-waiting for the Steelers once Dick LeBeau decides to call it a career. Whisenhunt is intent on bringing in a defensive boss that runs the 3-4. In-limbo Browns DC Ray Horton may be the favorite. Jan 16 - 9:50 AM

The Nashville Tennessean reports Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson is a candidate for the Dolphins and Bucs' general manager vacancies.

A former player, Dawson has spent the past seven seasons in the Titans' front office. He's GM Ruston Webster's top assistant, and evaluates both pro and college personnel. Dawson was a candidate for the Rams' general manager opening in 2012.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that former Saints DC Gregg Williams has met with the Titans and is on the verge of becoming Mike Munchak's assistant head coach.

Williams is still seeking NFL reinstatement after the Bounty Scandal, but appears set to reunite with Munchak after being suspended for the entire 2012 season. According to Schefter, Williams could have his suspension removed before the Super Bowl, allowing him to finalize a contract with the Titans. One of the NFL's most blitz-heavy minds, Williams has a strong background in the 4-3 defense and will work alongside current DC Jerry Gray, who served on his defensive staff during their time in Buffalo.

Titans fired linebackers coach Frank Bush.

"When you are 6-10 and you give up a lot of points, heads are going to roll, it’s just a matter of when," said Bush, who joined head coach Mike Munchak’s staff in 2011. The Titans set a franchise record for points allowed in a season (471) and gave up at least 30 points in half their games. Bush is the third Titans assistant to be let go since the end of the season. Munchak fired tight ends coach John Zernhelt on Tuesday after parting with running backs coach Jim Skipper last week. Offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was fired in November.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Oilers/Titans had a "player-organized performance incentives pool to reward big plays" during Gregg Williams' 11-year tenure as an assistant coach with the organization.

Williams was with the Oilers/Titans from 1990-2000, and coordinated Jeff Fisher's defense from 1997-2000. According to former players, "coaches were aware" of the activity, but "didn’t organize bonus programs or hand out money for deliberately injuring an opponent." Former Oilers LB Al Smith said the practice stretched back to "long before" Buddy Ryan served as the team's defensive coordinator in 1993. Williams will meet with NFL security officials in New York on Monday.

Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray has been dropped out of the Buccaneers' head-coaching race.

Gray didn't make the final cut -- the Bucs are oddly in heavy pursuit of Mike Sherman -- and the Titans will be happy to have him back. A DBs coach at heart, Gray has overseen the rapid development of young CBs Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner, as well as Cortland Finnegan's career year in 2011. Gray's return may help the Titans' chances of re-signing free agent Finnegan.

Ex-Titans coach Jeff Fisher "may entertain" another head coaching job as soon as 2012.

"I'm enjoying my time (off but) certainly not done with what I set out to do, and that was to win a championship," said Fisher. "So looking forward to another opportunity to try to do so." Fisher plans to spend the fall studying film to get a better handle on "the X's and O's" and the systems other coaches have in place.

Ex-Titans coach Jeff Fisher won't think about a return to coaching until next January.

Fisher remains a consultant for the NFL's competition committee while drawing approximately $4 million via his buyout from owner Bud Adams. He plans to hunt, fish, and watch his son play football for Auburn. "First time I've had a spring, a summer, a fall," said Fisher. "I've not seen Montana in the fall, so I’m going to do a lot of that stuff." The 53-year-old should be near the top of the list for head coaching vacancies in 2012.

Titans hired former Texans DC Frank Bush as linebackers coach.

Last year's linebackers coach, Dave McGinnis, moves into a senior assistant coach role as Mike Munchak's right-hand man. Bush and Munchak were teammates on the Oilers. He's going to have to toil as a position coach for awhile after last year's debacle with the Texans' defense. Bush worked as LBs coach in Denver and Arizona before leaving for Houston.

Titans named Jerry Gray defensive coordinator.

He was hired to be the University of Texas' DBs coach just 26 days ago, but is reportedly set to make over $1 million annually with the Titans. Texas was to pay him "just" $400,000. A former teammate of HC Mike Munchak, Gray is likely to keep the Titans' 4-3 scheme intact.

University of Texas DBs coach Jerry Gray arrived at the Nashville airport Friday, ostensibly to interview with the Titans.

Head coach Mike Munchak personally picked up Gray at the airport, indicating that he's putting on the full-court press to hire Gray as defensive coordinator. On Thursday, Gray told a crowd at the Longhorn Club that he wouldn't leave Austin. The opportunity may ultimately prove too good to pass up.

University of Texans defensive backs coach Jerry Gray told a crowd at the Longhorn Club meeting Thursday that he would stay in Austin rather than accepting the Titans defensive coordinator job.

Gray has yet to make an official statement, but it's believed that he's been leaning that way all along. He's leery of fleeing the program just a month after accepting the job. Owner Bud Adams has given coach Mike Munchack a blank check to fill out his coaching staff, so the Titans could apply increased pressure.

Titans coach Mike Munchak is targeting former Texans defensive coordinator Frank Bush to coach the linebackers in Nashville.

Bush was a teammate of Munchak's on the Oilers. He's not going to get another coordinator job after the Texans defense rolled over in 2010. Bush's addition would leave assistant head coach/linebackers Dave McGinnis in limbo.

The Titans have reportedly offered their defensive coordinator position to University of Texas defensive backs coach Jerry Gray.

Gray is still weighing the decision to leave Texas before coaching a single season in Austin. He and head coach Mike Munchak worked together with the Titans for four years before he left to become a successful coordinator with the Bills from 2001-2005. Gray has coached defensive backs for the Redskins and Seahawks over the past five years.

Current Giants DC and Titans HC candidate Perry Fewell acknowledged the Titans' need for a franchise quarterback following his Friday interview.

"That would be the challenge," Fewell said when asked about finding a QB. "They have one of the best backs in the league and a great offensive line. Just adding another piece to that puzzle should help the Titans win the division and then enter the playoffs." It's encouraging for Titans fans that Fewell understands the need for a new signal caller, but current OL coach Mike Munchak remains the frontrunner to land the job.
