The Detroit defense may get a boost in Week 17, as CB Darius Slay (hamstring) has resumed practicing.
Slay missed Detroit's Week 16 game at Dallas, where the Lions were hammered by the Cowboys. Dak Prescott and company hung 42 points on the Detroit defense that had not allowed more than 20 points to an opposing team since October 16th. The return of Slay would help the Lions this week in a critical game against NFC North rival Green Bay, who has scored 35.3 points per game over the last three weeks. The Lions D/ST is not a worthwhile fantasy option in Week 17 against the Packers. Wed, Dec 28, 2016 03:56:00 PM

Detroit will host Chicago QB Matt Barkley in Week 14, who has managed to completed just 51.7 percent of his pass attempts in 2016.

In addition to the low completion percentage, Barkley has four interceptions in limited action this season and has thrown an interception once every 17.1 pass attempts in his career. The Lions D/ST has been solid over the second half of the season and is a prime streaming target for Week 14 while owned in just 23 percent of Yahoo leagues.

The Detroit defense will look to repeat its Week 9 performance against Minnesota when the NFC North rivals meet on Thursday.

The Lions and Vikings met three weeks ago in Minnesota, where the Lions edged the Vikings 22-16 in overtime. Detroit held the struggling Minnesota running game to 78 yards on 25 attempts, and will look to repeat that success on Thursday. With WR Stefon Diggs (knee) declared inactive, the Vikings will rely on a thin wide receiver group to carry their offense, as their 32nd-ranked rushing offense has disappointed all season. The Lions D/ST is a mid-range fantasy option on Thanksgiving.

Detroit LB DeAndre Levy (knee) returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Week 1.

While Levy is back on the practice field, his return to game action could still be weeks away. "Not certain," coach Jim Caldwell said before practice. "We'll see whenever he gets there." Detroit has struggled defensively in 2016 and has allowed 10 touchdowns to tight ends in nine games. Even without Levy back in the fold, the Lions D/ST is a worthwhile streaming candidate at home against Blake Bortles and Jacksonville in Week 11.

The Detroit defense is last in the NFL in third-down defense, allowing conversions at a 51.2 percent clip.

"It’s not our third down, I think, is the problem," DC Teryl Austin said. "It’s our second-down defense, 'cause we’re not getting them into third-and-longs." Third-down defense has been just a part of the defensive issues in Detroit this season, as the Lions have struggled in pass defense and have just three interceptions in seven games. The Lions D/ST is difficult to trust on the road in Week 8 despite a matchup against Houston QB Brock Osweiler.

Detroit DE Ziggy Ansah (ankle) is expected to play on Sunday, his first action since Week 2.

The Lions have allowed 24.7 points and 117.7 rushing yards per game without the defensive end and will welcome his return in a matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are last among NFL offenses in total yardage at just 284.2 yards per game, making the Lions D/ST a reasonable streaming candidate for Week 6.

The Detroit defense will take on Chicago QB Brian Hoyer on Sunday, with Jay Cutler (thumb) listed as doubtful for Week 4.

Hoyer managed to escape Week 3 without throwing an interception and absorbing only one sack, but his start still makes the Lions D/ST a worthwhile streaming option in Week 4. Detroit has forced just one turnover on the season but will look to add to their total in this favorable matchup.

Detroit linebacker DeAndre Levy missed practice on Wednesday due to a quadriceps injury.

No information regarding Levy's Sunday status has surfaced quite yet, but the linebacker played all 70 of Detroit's offensive snaps in Week 1 and will be needed when the Lions host Tennessee on Sunday. The Lions D/ST will be a mid-tier fantasy option in Week 2.

The Detroit Lions will travel to Chicago in Week 17 to face the Bears, who will be missing star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (hamstring).

Jeffery did not play in Week 16 and has been placed on injured reserve. This leaves Chicago QB Jay Cutler short on receiving options and helps the Lions avoid a wide receiver who dropped 147 yards and a touchdown on them in Week 6. Chicago was able to manage 285 passing yards in Week 16 without Jeffery, so fantasy owners should still avoid the Lions D/ST this week, but the absence of Jeffery will certainly help their cause.

The Detroit defense has a date with San Francisco QB Blaine Gabbert in Week 16.

Gabbert completed 30 of 50 passes in Week 15 against Cincinnati and threw three interceptions. The San Francisco offensive line has not done Gabbert any favors, as the quarterback has been sacked 19 times in the last four weeks, the most of any NFL quarterback in that span. The Lions D/ST is an excellent fantasy option this week at home against the 49ers.

The Detroit defense has improved in pass defense recently, allowing just 170.8 passing yards per game over the last four weeks.

The competition was a mixed bag of talent, but Derek Carr and Aaron Rodgers were two of the opponents handled by the Detroit secondary. The Lions will look to keep their defensive success rolling in Week 15 when they travel to New Orleans to face the Saints, owners of the NFL's second-best passing attack. The Lions D/ST isn't a recommended fantasy option in Week 15 but hosts San Francisco in Week 16, which is notable for fantasy owners looking ahead.

The Detroit Lions travel to St. Louis in Week 14 to take on the struggling Rams offense.

The performance of the St. Louis offense has plummeted in recent weeks, creating a prime target for fantasy defenses. Over the last four weeks, the Rams have averaged just 9.0 points per game while turning the ball over 10 times and topping 300 total yards just once. Defenses have been able to slow rookie Todd Gurley with no threat of the Rams throwing the ball with any success. Detroit is a top-10 fantasy option in Week 14 in this matchup.
Thu, Dec 10, 2015 03:57:00 AM

The Detroit Lions have allowed just 195.5 passing yards per game over their last four contests.

The Lions went 3-1 in those four games and are riding a three-game winning streak. The lone quarterback to top 300 yards over the last month against Detroit was Aaron Rodgers, who the Lions face on Thursday night. Rodgers threw for 325 yards in Green Bay's Week 10 loss to Detroit, and will get another shot at his division rival this week. The Lions D/ST is a mid-tier fantasy option in Week 13.
Thu, Dec 3, 2015 04:12:00 AM

The Detroit defense has not forced a turnover since Week 7.

The Lions have been unsuccessful in the turnover department in recent weeks, but have put together two solid defensive performances since their Week 9 bye. The first eight games of the 2015 saw Detroit allow 30.6 points per game, while they have given up just 29 total points over the last two weeks. Week 12 brings a matchup with Philadelphia QB Mark Sanchez, who has thrown four interceptions in 64 pass attempts this season. The Lions D/ST is a reasonable streaming option this week.
Thu, Nov 26, 2015 02:42:00 AM

The Detroit Lions will host the Oakland Raiders in Week 11, who have averaged 30 points per game over the last four weeks.

The Detroit defense turned in a solid Week 10 performance in an upset win at Green Bay, but won't be a fantasy option this week when they host the Oakland Raiders. The Oakland offense registers eighth among NFL teams in total offense, averaging 374.2 total yards each week. The Lions D/ST is not fantasy roster material right now.
