Free agent DE Jared DeVries will undergo microfracture knee surgery next month, but hopes to resume his playing career.
DeVries, who turns 35 in June, missed all of 2010 with knee problems and the entire 2009 campaign with a torn Achilles' tendon. He'd need a near miracle to play effectively again. We can't imagine anyone signing him. Sun, Jan 23, 2011 04:11:00 PM

Lions placed DE Jared DeVries (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

At age 34, DeVries' career is likely over. The career Lion will likely need surgery to repair his knee, which would follow up a 2009 season washed out by an Achilles' tear. A rare Lion who could defend the run, DeVries was never an asset as a pass rusher. He has 16.5 sacks in 11 seasons.

The Lions will likely place DE Jared DeVries (knee) on injured reserve, according to beat writer Tom Kowalski.

DeVries may very well be able to play again at some point this season, but the Lions aren't going to save a roster spot for him. They are extremely deep at defensive end anyway with Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson ahead of him.

Lions DE Jared DeVries underwent successful surgery on his injured knee Wednesday.

According to DeVries' agent, "we think he can hopefully be back in a few weeks." Whether or not DeVries will be back with the Lions remains to be seen.

Lions DE Jared DeVries was sent to a specialist in Atlanta to get a second opinion on his injured knee.

The knee injury has dogged DeVries throughout training camp, and surgery could now be an option. The 34-year-old was already on the roster bubble. It looks like he could be headed for injured reserve instead.

Lions DE Jared DeVries appears likely to lose his roster spot following the addition of Lawrence Jackson.

DeVries has missed nearly all of camp with a leg injury (believed to be to his knee), and was never a good bet to stay healthy at age 34 and coming off a torn Achilles' tendon. The former Iowa Hawkeye's NFL career may be over.

Lions re-signed DE Jared DeVries to a one-year, $1.7 million contract.

It's nice of the Lions to give DeVries another shot, but the 34-year-old is hardly a good bet to be an asset in 2010 as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles' tendon. Ideally, they'll find someone with a higher upside to fill the No. 4 end role behind Kyle Vanden Bosch, Cliff Avril, and Jason Hunter.

The Lions will re-sign free agent Jared DeVries on Monday, according to John Niyo of the Detroit Free Press.

The expected deal was first mentioned on Bleacher Report Friday. DeVries, coming off a torn Achilles', will reportedly receive a one-year contract with a maximum value of $1.7 million. It's likely heavily incentive laden.

The Jaguars are reportedly showing interest in free agent DE Jared DeVries.

DeVries, 34 in June and coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, certainly wouldn't cure Jacksonville's pass rush woes. He's only a run-stopping reserve end.

The Lions are reportedly interested in retaining free agent DE Jared DeVries, despite releasing him Tuesday.

DeVries is coming off a torn Achilles', supplies next to no pass rush, and turns 34 before the season. He's a candidate for a minimum contract only.

Lions released DE Jared DeVries.

DeVries missed all of last season after tearing his Achilles' tendon in training camp. Turning 34 in June, DeVries was scheduled to receive a roster bonus in a couple of weeks. He could land elsewhere as a rotational lineman but won't receive a guaranteed deal.

Lions placed DE Jared DeVries (torn Achilles') on injured reserve, ending his season.

We may not see DeVries again. He turns 34 before next season and is due $1.3 million in salary. A probable cap casualty (assuming there is a cap) next spring, DeVries registered 8.5 sacks in 20 starts between '07 and '08.

Lions DE Jared DeVries will miss the 2009 season after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in a goal-line drill Monday morning.

It's the third Achilles' tear through two weeks of NFL training camp (Reggie Kelly and Ma'ake Kemoeatu were the others), and career-threatening for DeVries, 33. The loss hurts the Lions' depth, but may be a blessing in disguise. Detroit can now get its top two pass rushers on the field; Dewayne White will likely kick to left defensive end with Cliff Avril on the weak side.

Lions DE Jared DeVries suffered a potentially serious right leg injury during a goal-line drill at Monday's practice.

"Didn't look real good on the field," coach Jim Schwartz said. "It's down around his ankle. I don't want to make any speculation." If DeVries misses regular season time, Dewayne White would start at left defensive end.

Lions placed DE Jared DeVries (broken hand) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The former Iowa Hawkeye finishes with 29 tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. DeVries is only due $1.3 million in 2009 and will probably return, but defensive end will be a high priority for Detroit in the offseason.
