The New York Daily News reports free agent OT Damien Woody has opted to retire.
Woody was only going to play for the Jets. He must not have liked what he heard from the team earlier in the day. Coming off a torn Achilles at age 33, he was a poor bet to land a guaranteed deal. Woody began his career as a two-time Super Bowl champ and Pro Bowl center with the Patriots and ended it as a dominant run-blocking right tackle. Sandwiched in between was a disappointing four-year run as a guard in Detroit. Woody is expected to pursue a career in television. Tue, Jul 26, 2011 06:57:00 PM

The Jets have already contacted the player rep for free agent RT Damien Woody about a potential return.

Woody only wants to play for the Jets, and the interest appears to be mutual. Whether he'll be guaranteed his old starting job is another matter. Coming off Achilles surgery, he could have his hands full with Vlad Ducasse.

Free agent RT Damien Woody indicated Monday that he will retire if the Jets don't re-sign him.

"At the end of the day, you've got to make a decision one way or the other," he said. "It's either the Jets or nothing." A 12-year veteran, Woody is coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, an injury that can threaten the career of players much younger than him. It's unclear if he will be healthy for Week 1.

Free agent OT Damien Woody (Achilles) has no interest in playing for the veteran minimum this season.

The 12-year veteran acknowledged that he's not 100 percent recovered from Achilles' surgery, and he's not sure when he will be. Although Woody is interested in a return to the Jets, he doesn't want to back up Vlad Ducasse. He sounds prepared to walk away from football for a job in TV if necessary.

Appearing on PFT Live Tuesday, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News seconded an ESPN New York report that the Jets will likely re-sign free agent RT Damien Woody, despite releasing him in February.

"From what I'm hearing, Woody will likely be back at a reduced rate," said Mehta. ESPN New York's Rich Cimini wrote on May 22 that Woody remains on the Jets' "radar screen" as insurance against another disappointing year from 2010 second-round pick Vlad Ducasse. Woody is currently rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn left Achilles'. He's entering his age-34 season.

ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports that free agent OT Damien Woody remains on the Jets' "radar screen."

The Jets released Woody in late February, saving $3.35 million in salary, but Cimini says "the feeling close to the team" is that Woody, now 33, will "likely to re-sign at some point." New York is said to be concerned about the practice time potential replacement Vladimir Ducasse is missing due to the lockout. Woody would indeed make for a shrewd insurance policy if Ducasse is not ready.

Free agent OT Damien Woody is not likely to return to the Jets, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Woody underwent Achilles' surgery in January at age 33 and was released in February. He's no lock to even be ready for training camp and the Jets need to move on at the tackle position. The tentative plan, for now, is to kick 2010 second-round pick Vlad Ducasse outside from guard to replace Woody.

Free agent OT Damien Woody is targeting June for 100 percent recovery from his late-season Achilles' tendon tear.

Players are always optimistic, but Achilles injuries still give us plenty of pause. It's far from a sure bet that Woody will be ready for full contract in training camp. In addition to the Patriots, Woody said he would "love" to return to the Jets.

Free agent OT Damien Woody says he would "definitely" be open to playing for the Patriots.

The problem is that Woody is coming off Achilles and knee surgeries. It's hard to imagine him being able to pass physicals anytime soon. "I had a great time up there," said Woody, who began his career with New England as the No. 17 overall pick in 1999. "I didn’t leave on any bad terms or anything like that. That would definitely be intriguing, coming back."

Jets released RT Damien Woody.

The move takes New York off the hook for a $3.35 million salary and $400,000 workout bonus, assuming Woody made weight in the offseason. Woody is an elite run blocker and underrated in pass protection when healthy, but the 33-year-old is coming off a torn left Achilles', and the Jets wanted to keep their options open while he rehabs. Beat writer Manish Mehta has suggested Woody could be back, although it would have to be at a lesser salary. Woody had Achilles surgery on January 12. He won't be healthy anytime soon.

Jets placed RT Damien Woody on injured reserve with a torn left Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

He'll undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon. Not only is it a monster blow to the Jets' playoff chances -- Woody is their best run blocker by a good margin -- Achilles' surgery at age 33 is never good news. Wayne Hunter will take over at right tackle, and it's a safe bet that Patriots coach Bill Belichick will work to exploit that downgrade this Sunday. Woody will return at a $3.35 million base salary in 2011, but his best days may be behind him.

Though he took the first-team reps in practice Tuesday while RT Damien Woody (knee) sat out, Wayne Hunter said he expects Woody to play this weekend.

We would expect him to gut it out, as well, but it's clear that his surgically-repaired knee isn't going to allow him to perform at his peak abilities. Woody is the Jets' best run blocker.

Jets coach Rex Ryan isn't sure if RT Damien Woody (knee) will be able to play this weekend against the Patriots.

You could tell Woody was really struggling with his surgically-repaired knee against the Colts, and Ryan said the veteran lineman has been "wobbling around." Woody, for his part, said he just needed to get back in game shape after missing the last three regular season games. Wayne Hunter will fill in if Woody can't go this weekend.

Coach Rex Ryan said that RT Damien Woody (knee) is expected back for Saturday's game against the Colts.

Woody has been out since getting a knee scope following Week 14. His return bodes well for the Jets' running game and sends Wayne Hunter back to the bench. It's worth noting that the Colts' run defense has suddenly stepped up over the last three weeks, shutting down Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren McFadden and Chris Johnson in succession.

Jets RT Damien Woody (knee) has been ruled out for Week 16.

Woody is the best run blocker on the Jets, so his continued absence makes Shonn Greene LaDainian Tomlinson that much less attractive fantasy options against the Bears. Chicago also ranks third in the league in run defense.
