Jason Witten's new five-year deal is worth $29.6 million, but includes no new guaranteed money.
In other words, it's mostly a salary cap contortion that lowers Witten's 2017 cap number and takes care of his 2018 "will he or won't he return to the Cowboys?" status ahead of time. Going on 35, Witten's career is on a year-by-year basis at this point. Mar 28 - 1:46 PM

Cowboys signed Jason Witten to a four-year extension through 2021.

It is a shock both because EVP Stephen Jones said there were no plans to extend Witten exactly a month ago and the extension keeps him under contract through his age-39 season. The deal likely will lower his $12.262 million cap hit this year, however, and the length of the contract should keep his cap number down for the next several seasons. Witten should become the franchise leader in receiving yards this year.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said there are no current plans to give Jason Witten a contract extension.

Headed into the final season of a five-year, $37 million extension he signed in 2011, Witten turns 35 in May. He's already said he's not expecting a new deal. Witten is slated to make $7.4 million in 2017.

Jason Witten doesn't expect to sign a contract extension this offseason.

Witten is entering a contract year. Asked if he planned to continue his career beyond 2017, Witten was noncommittal. "I think at this point you just go into it and look at it one year at a time," he said. "It sounds like you may know in April, but you don't know what it's going to feel like at this point in early February coming off the season." The 10-time Pro Bowler turns 35 in May.

Jason Witten absorbed six-of-nine targets for 59 yards and a touchdown Sunday in the Cowboys' Divisional Round loss to the Packers.

Witten was the victim of an egregious missed call in the first half. Packers LB Joe Thomas clearly interfered with him on a throw to the end zone but the referees dismissed it as incidental contact. Witten made up for the missed opportunity by reeling in a six-yard touchdown strike from Dak Prescott early in the fourth quarter. It was Witten’s first touchdown in eight career postseason games. Witten, as many of you have no doubt discovered, isn’t the fleetest of foot. But he still has a great set of hands and should maintain his role as Prescott’s safety valve in 2017.

Jason Witten caught his only target for 10 yards Week 17 against the Eagles.

Like the rest of the starters, Witten was not on the field much in the meaningless season finale. A low-upside fantasy option, Witten will just be a punt play in DFS during the playoffs.
Jan 1 - 4:10 PM

Jason Witten caught 2-of-4 targets for 33 yards and one touchdown in the Cowboys' Week 16 win over the Lions.

The Lions' tight-end defense has solidified since an awful start to the year. But Witten was able to make his catches count, the first being a 23-yarder and the second a 10-yard touchdown from Dez Bryant on a trick play. Witten may only play a series or two in next week's meaningless date with the Eagles. Either way, Philadelphia is one of the best defenses against tight ends.

Jason Witten caught 10 passes for 51 yards in Dallas' Week 15 win over the Bucs.

Witten did most of his damage with eight catches in the first half. He was Dak Prescott's top checkdown, but failed to make an impact despite leading the team in targets. It was still one of Witten's better games. Witten will be a low-upside TE2 for Week 16 against Detroit.

Jason Witten caught 4-of-7 targets for 26 yards in Week 14.

It was another quiet game after Witten was held without a catch last week. Witten has faded over the last five games. He’s a TE2 for Week 15 against the Bucs.

Jason Witten wasn't targeted in the Cowboys' Week 13 win over the Vikings.

Witten actually did snag a pass, but it was called back by a Cowboys penalty. The catch-less effort was his first since Nov. 16, 2008, a span of 130 games. Stunning. Witten will enter Week 14 with 70 yards over his past three games. He'll be a low-upside TE2 against the Giants.

Jason Witten caught 3-of-3 targets for 33 yards in the Cowboys' Week 12 win over the Redskins.

He was kept quiet much of the afternoon, going into halftime with one catch for four yards. The Redskins had previously been getting shredded by tight ends, but Witten wasn't able to continue the assault. He still provides a nice, safe floor and will be on the TE1 map next week on the road at the Vikings.

Jason Witten caught 5-of-7 targets for 37 yards in the Cowboys' Week 11 win over the Ravens.

Witten was again targeted in the end zone in this one, but he and Dak Prescott didn't appear to be on the same page on the play as it fell incomplete. Witten's floor is safe, which keeps him in the every-week TE1 discussion. He'll get the Redskins in Week 12. Witten went 3-51 against them in Week 2.

Jason Witten pulled in six-of-eight targets for 59 yards Sunday in the Cowboys' Week 10 win over the Steelers.

Witten didn’t put up huge stats but he made two heads-up plays on the Cowboys’ game-winning drive. Dak Prescott targeted Witten in the open field but rather than wasting a timeout by catching it, Witten let the ball fall harmlessly to the turf. Later on the same drive he caught a short pass along the right sideline. Witten couldn’t get out of bounds, but stayed upright long enough to draw a 15-yard facemask penalty. Witten has caught 14-of-18 targets for 193 yards over his last two games, so he’s starting to come around. Consider him a borderline TE1 against Baltimore next week.
Sun, Nov 13, 2016 09:28:00 PM

Jason Witten caught 8-of-10 targets for 134 yards and a touchdown Week 9 against the Browns.

This was a shockingly productive game from Witten. The 100-yard game was his first since Week 17 of 2013, and he topped 130 yards for only the seventh time in his illustrious career. He also scored his second touchdown in as many games after scoring one touchdown total in 21 games before last week. Witten will face a tougher test next week in Pittsburgh, but he is playing his way back into the TE1 conversation.

Jason Witten caught 2-of-3 targets for 16 yards and a touchdown in Dallas' Week 8 win over the Eagles.

Witten came into Sunday night questionable with a chest injury, but played every snap. He was left wide open for a game-winning five-yard touchdown in overtime. Witten's targets were down with Dez Bryant back, but he remains one of Dallas' top red-zone threats. Witten has a startable matchup with Cleveland in Week 9.
