Jason Witten retired after 15 seasons in the NFL.
News of Witten's likely retirement surfaced during the draft last week, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the tight end had yet to make up his mind. He apparently has now. Following in the footsteps of long-time quarterback Tony Romo, Witten will step right into the broadcast booth as the analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football. A career Cowboy, Witten finishes his run with the fourth-most receptions in NFL history and the second-most by a tight end behind just Tony Gonzalez. With two First-Team All-Pros and 11 Pro Bowls to his name, Witten is very likely to end up in the Hall of Fame. May 3 - 8:07 AM

Cowboys TE Jason Witten reportedly received an "interesting" last-minute proposal from another network.

Witten's decision is likely to come Wednesday. He was well on his way to joining ESPN's Monday Night Football booth before another network reportedly swooped in. It seems very unlikely he returns to the Cowboys if there are two concrete offers waiting for the 15-year veteran outside of football. Even so, head coach Jason Garrett is actively trying to persuade Witten to return for one more season. If the Cowboys are expecting him to move on, they certainly did little to address that position over the weekend, waiting until the final day to draft Stanford TE Dalton Schultz. We fully expect Witten to officially hang up his cleats this week.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Jason Witten will meet with his family before making a final decision on his playing future.

Witten is reportedly on his way to the broadcast booth to cover Monday Night Football for ESPN but Jones said the tight end has yet to make a final decision. It would be the end of an era in Dallas if Witten decides to move on. The 35-year-old (36 next month) hasn't missed a game since 2003 and has finished with 60 or more catches in 14 straight seasons. With Witten's future in doubt, the Cowboys would be wise to address their pass-catching need in the draft.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten is retiring from the NFL after 15 seasons.

Just 10 days ago, Witten confirmed he was going to play this season and planned to bypass a TV job until next year at the earliest. ESPN must have sweetened their offer, as the network is desperate to fill out its new Monday Night Football team. Per ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Witten will be a lead analyst on the crew. Witten, 36 next week, will meet with Jerry Jones on Friday to finalize his decision. A 2003 third-rounder, Witten caught 68 career touchdowns and amassed 1,152 catches for 12,448 yards. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro and made 11 Pro Bowls. Witten is likely eventually headed for the Hall of Fame.
Apr 27 - 12:24 PM

Jason Witten confirmed he'll play for the Cowboys in 2018.

Witten was drawing television interest in April but confirmed he has no interest in taking a studio job right now. "Just taking it one year at a time," he said. This was expected after he restructured his contract a few weeks ago. Coming off his lowest yardage total since his rookie season in 2003, Witten turns 36 in May.
Apr 17 - 8:49 PM

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones says Jason Witten is "all in" for 2018.

Witten was drawing television interest earlier this month but recently restructured his contract, telegraphing he will be back for a 16th season. Coming off his lowest yardage total since his rookie season in 2003, Witten turns 36 in May.
Mar 26 - 2:00 PM

Cowboys restructured Jason Witten's contract.

The move creates roughly $3.5 million in extra cap space for Dallas. It's the second contract the Cowboys have restructured in the last week, creating a total of $10 million in additional cap space for the team. This transaction leads us to assume Witten, who turns 36 in May, will obviously continue his career in 2018.
Mar 24 - 1:11 PM

Sporting News' Michael McCarthy reports Fox is "targeting" Jason Witten to be their new Thursday Night Football analyst.

Following Tony Romo's instant success last season, it seems Fox wants to get into the mix as well with a freshly-out-of-the-league Cowboy. Witten has said he will continue his career his 2018, so this is likely a non-starter. Still, the future Hall of Famer appears to have some options. Witten will turn 36 in May.
Mar 12 - 10:04 AM

Jason Witten said he will continue his career in 2018.

"I love playing this game too much," Witten said, "and I know I can play at a high level." Set to turn 36 in May, Witten caught 63 passes for 560 yards (8.9 YPR) and five touchdowns in 2017. While the Cowboys could use more of a playmaking element at the position, Witten is about as reliable a safety blanket as Dak Prescott could ask for.
Jan 1 - 12:48 PM

Jason Witten caught 2-of-3 targets for 17 yards in Week 17 against the Eagles.

Witten closes out the year with a 63/560/5 line. He remained effective through his age-35 season, but isn't more than a third-down/red-zone option at this stage of his career. Dallas extended Witten last March, but he isn't a lock to return in 2018.

Updating an earlier item, Cowboys TE Jason Witten is active for Week 17 against the Eagles.

The Cowboys plan to play all of their starters despite a meaningless game. Dallas' inactives are WR Cole Beasley, RB Rod Smith, TE Blake Jarwin, DL Benson Mayowa, and DL David Irving.

Jason Witten nabbed five-of-nine targets for 39 yards Sunday in the Cowboys’ Week 16 loss to the Cowboys.

He couldn’t get anything going in the first half but woke up by catching all five of his second-half targets. Witten still has great hands and is big enough to create mismatches in the red zone, though the 35-year-old isn’t exactly a burner at this stage of his career. He’ll wrap up his 15th season at Philadelphia in Week 17.

Jason Witten caught 4-of-5 passes for 47 yards in Week 15 against Oakland.

Witten did most of his damage in the first half, but wasn't much of a factor in a run-heavy gamescript. He's been trending up with at least 40 yards or a touchdown the last four weeks. Witten gets a matchup with Seattle in Week 16.

Jason Witten came down with one catch for 20 yards and a touchdown on two targets Sunday in the Cowboys’ Week 14 win over the Giants.

Witten wasn’t even targeted until the fourth quarter. He saved his best for last though, finding the end zone on a 20-yard strike from Dak Prescott. In addition to being his only catch of the game, Witten’s touchdown broke a 10-10 tie with 7:38 remaining. Witten has caught just two-of-seven targets over his last two games, though fortunately for fantasy owners, both catches went for touchdowns. He’ll try for another TD against the Raiders in Week 15.

Jason Witten caught 1-of-5 targets for an eight-yard touchdown in the Cowboys' Week 13 win over the Redskins.

Dak Prescott completed just 11 passes, but one of them was to Witten in the end zone. Witten's fourth touchdown of 2017 came against extremely tight coverage. It was his first score in six games. Witten's numbers have been all over the map, but he'll remain in the low-end TE1 mix against the Giants' league-worst tight end defense in Week 14.
