The Cowboys have completed a restructuring of Jason Witten's contract, clearing roughly $3.65 million in cap space.
The Cowboys converted $4.56 million of Witten's $5.5 million 2013 base salary into a bonus. LG Nate Livings also had his deal restructured as the Cowboys are working hard to free up some money. Witten remains under contract through 2017, when he'll be 35 years old. Feb 28 - 12:32 PM

The Cowboys plan to restructure Jason Witten's contract.

Witten is due a $5.5 million base salary with an $8 million cap charge. He'll be just one of "about a dozen" players the Cowboys approach about reworking their deals in an effort to become salary-cap compliant by March 12.

Jason Witten caught seven passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in Dallas' season-ending loss to the Redskins in Week 17.

The seven grabs extend Witten's new career-high total to 110, and give him 806 for his career. He's only the third tight end in NFL history to post 800 or more receptions. Witten finishes 2012 with 1,039 yards, which is just 106 off his career-best total of 1,145 from 2007. He's now surpassed 1,000 yards three times in the past four years. It's possible — perhaps likely — Witten won't come close to equaling these numbers during his age-31 campaign in 2013, but he's earned another season of high-end TE1 status.

Jason Witten caught six passes for 60 yards in the Cowboys' Week 16 overtime loss to the Saints.

The six catches set a new single-season NFL record for catches by a tight end in a season. The grabs gave him 103 on the year, which breaks the mark previously held by Tony Gonzalez from the 2004 campaign when Gonzalez hauled in 102 balls. If Witten could just find the end zone this season, it would be one of the best seasons ever put together by a tight end. Unfortunately, Witten has found the end zone just twice on the year. Dallas travels to Washington in Week 17.

Jason Witten is six catches away from setting the single-season record for receptions by a tight end.

At age 30, Witten has a career-high 97 catches in 14 games. The record of 102 was set by Tony Gonzalez in 2004. Witten won't have any trouble setting the mark with juicy matchups against the Bucs and Redskins still on the schedule. "He just goes about it the right way," coach Jason Garrett said. "You hear me say this a lot about guys, but he's the best example of it. ... I think he's had a remarkable year."

Jason Witten caught five passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in Dallas' Week 15 win over the Steelers.

Astoundingly, the touchdown was just Witten's second of the season even though he entered Week 15 with 92 catches on 124 targets. The yards were actually his fewest since Week 3, but Witten has now notched five or more grabs in 10 of his past 11 games. If Witten hauls in three catches in Week 16, it will give him the first 100-reception campaign of his illustrious career. The 97 grabs are already a new personal best.

Jason Witten caught four passes for 62 yards in the Cowboys' Week 14 win over the Bengals.

Witten secured all four of his targets, with his one big play coming down the seam to set up DeMarco Murray's goal-line touchdown. Witten has scored just one touchdown this season. He'll be a mid-range TE1 against Pittsburgh in Week 15.

Jason Witten caught six passes for 108 yards in Dallas' Week 13 win over the Eagles.

He also secured an Eagles' onside kick with 0:31 remaining. Witten was once again Tony Romo's preferred pass catcher, receiving a team-high eight targets in his third 100-yard game of the season. Witten has drawn a mammoth 120 targets on the year, putting his weekly average at 10. All the looks have him on pace for a 73/1,091/1 line. The 1,000-yard campaign would be his third in four seasons, and fourth of his 10-year career. He's locked in as an upper-echelon TE1 heading into the fantasy playoffs.

Jason Witten caught nine balls for 74 yards in the Cowboys' Week 12 loss to the Redskins.

He's now caught at least six balls in nine straight games. Witten was Tony Romo's go-to target over the middle against the Redskins, after the early-game Cole Beasley experiment failed. Witten finished with a team-high 15 pass targets. Keep rolling out Witten as a mid-range to high-end TE1 when the Cowboys face Philadelphia in Week 13.

Jason Witten caught seven passes for 51 yards in the Cowboys' Week 11 win over the Browns.

Witten doesn't have the same juice in his legs as he once did on after-catch runs, but he continues to be a safety valve and effective, efficient possession target for Tony Romo. Witten has frequently given the Redskins' pass defense problems historically, and they will square off again on Thanksgiving Day.

Jason Witten hauled in eight passes for 47 yards at Philadelphia in Week 10.

Witten saw a team-high 10 targets, mostly on dump-offs and check-downs for a paltry 5.9-yard average in a conservative attack. Along the way, he regained the NFL receptions lead among tight ends from Tony Gonzalez. Witten remains PPR gold heading into Week 11 versus the Browns.

Jason Witten caught seven passes for 51 yards in Dallas' Week 9 loss.

The seven grabs give Witten 754 for his career, moving him past Michael Irvin for the most in Cowboys history. Although a terrible start to the season had the 30-year-old Witten's career in question, Tony Romo's favorite safety valve has now reeled in an eye-popping 50 catches over his past five games. With half the year gone, he's on pace for 116 receptions, 1,076 yards and two touchdowns. The catches would be a career high. Witten's catch and yardage paces should fall off, but his touchdown rate will almost certainly increase. He's locked in as a TE1.
Mon, Nov 5, 2012 12:43:00 AM

Jason Witten caught a Cowboys record 18 passes in Week 8, but it wasn't enough for Dallas in its 29-24 loss to the Giants.

Witten racked up 167 yards on a whopping 22 targets. Witten was a vacuum with vice grips as the Cowboys looked to erase a 23-0 deficit, making an unbelievable amount of grabs against tight coverage in traffic. After a horrendous, drop-marred three-game stretch to begin his season, Witten now has 43 catches over his past four games. You could say he's re-solidified himself as a must-start TE1.

Jason Witten hauled in six passes for 44 yards at Carolina in Week 7.

Witten's hands have been gold since an out-of-character drop-fest early in the season. He made a series of tough grabs in traffic, but didn't have room to run after the catch. Witten has regained TE1 status entering Week 8 versus the Giants.
Sun, Oct 21, 2012 05:03:00 PM

Jason Witten has played every offensive snap in three straight games.

The Cowboys aren't backing off a 30-year-old Witten. Over the last two games, he's solved his drop issues while catching 19 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown. Witten will be a clear TE1 against the Panthers this week.
