Chargers released ILB Gerald Hayes.
Signed in early October, Hayes wound up being a healthy scratch for his entire brief Chargers tenure. At age 31, it's likely that he has little left. Tue, Nov 8, 2011 01:55:00 PM

Chargers signed ILB Gerald Hayes, formerly of the Cardinals.

Hayes will be added for veteran insurance with Stephen Cooper (biceps) going on injured reserve. Hayes was a healthy scratch down the stretch last season after battling ongoing back injuries. Now 31, he drew little known interest after being released in late July.

Cardinals informed ILB Gerald Hayes of his release.

Hayes is 30 and owed was $4.25 million this season. He knew this was coming as soon as he was a healthy scratch down the stretch last year. Daryl Washington and Paris Lenon are penciled in as the Cardinals' starting inside linebackers.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes is "as good as gone," according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

Hayes, entering his age-31 season, is due a $4.25M salary after being a healthy scratch down the stretch of 2010. The only surprise is that he wasn't released before the lockout began. He'll be cut once it ends. The Cards' starting inside linebackers in 2011 are likely to be Daryl Washington and Paris Lenon.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes is a healthy scratch for the second straight game.

Rookie Daryl Washington will be the starter for the remainder of the season barring something drastic. John Skelton draws the start with QB Derek Anderson inactive. WR Steve Breaston and K Jay Feely are both active. WR Max Komar, C Ben Claxton, NT Gabe Watson, CB Marshay Green, CB A.J. Jefferson, S Hamza Abdullah round out the team's inactives.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes was a healthy scratch in Week 14.

Rookie Daryl Washington got the start and is expected to keep it for the rest of the season. Hayes performed admirably immediately after being activated from PUP at midseason, but faded badly as the Cardinals were gashed by Frank Gore and Steven Jackson in Weeks 12-13. Due $4.25 million in salary next season, Hayes may have played his last snap as a Cardinal.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes will retake his starting job this week.

Rookie Daryl Washington will presumably head to the bench, playing only on passing downs. Hayes spent the season's first six weeks on PUP after offseason back surgery. He's worth grabbing in deep IDP leagues, although we'd prefer to see him produce before recommending him as an LB3 start.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic predicts LB Gerald Hayes (back) to play 20 snaps as he returns from the PUP list.

Somers also envisioned special teams duty for the linebacker. The Cardinals will host the Buccaneers' 22nd-ranked rushing attack at University of Phoenix Stadium Week 8, and will be glad to have their starting MLBback in 4-3 packages.

Cardinals activated ILB Gerald Hayes and OLB O'Brien Schofield off the PUP list.

It remains to be seen if either will play in Week 8 against Tampa Bay, though Hayes has the best shot out of the two. Both will help to improve the Cardinals' 27th ranked defense.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes (back surgery) could be activated from the PUP list and play in Week 8.

"He did some good things in practice last week, but he had three days of practice and that's it," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "... I think we'll have a better feel for that this week and hopefully he'll be ready to go." Hayes will probably initially play a limited role upon return.

The Cardinals will not activate ILB Gerald Hayes (back surgery, PUP) or O'Brien Schofield (ACL surgery, PUP) before Sunday's game.

We knew Schofield wasn't ready yet, but it appeared Hayes had a good shot to play at least some snaps against the Seahawks. Daryl Washington will remain in the starting lineup for at least one more week.

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes (back surgery, PUP) could return on Sunday, but if he does his snaps will be limited.

He eventually could get his starting job as the strong side inside linebacker back, but it won't come right away. We expect it to eventually happen, though, with Paris Lenon moving to the weak side and Daryl Washington becoming a situational player.

Cardinals doctors have medically cleared ILB Gerald Hayes (back surgery, PUP) to resume practicing.

They've got a 21-day window to activate him from Physically Unable to Perform. Hayes can be a difference maker when 100 percent, and Arizona needs help with one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL entering Week 7.
Wed, Oct 20, 2010 01:07:00 PM

Cardinals ILB Gerald Hayes (back) is expected to return in Week 7 after the team's Week 6 bye.

The Cardinals are likely to work Hayes in slowly, as the back ailment is something he's been dealing with since last season. But he eventually could regain his starting role on the strong side, with Paris Lenon moving to the weak side to replace Daryl Washington.
Wed, Oct 13, 2010 08:33:00 AM

Cardinals placed ILB Gerald Hayes (back) on the reserve/PUP list.

The back injury dates back to the middle of last season. Hayes tried unsuccessfully to rehab the injury before ultimately going under the knife at the beginning of the summer. Rookie Daryl Washington looks like a fine fill-in, but it's a steep fall from Karlos Dansby to Paris Lenon at the other inside spot. The Cardinals will be a plus matchup for opposing running backs this season.
