ESPN has decided to not renew "analyst" Emmitt Smith's contract.
An overdue move. Truly one of the worst personalities in sports TV history, Smith exhibited surprisingly weak knowledge of the game and consistently butchered the English language. Sat, Feb 21, 2009 12:31:00 PM

Emmitt Smith officially retired today.

The league's all-time leading rusher should hold on to his record for a while, unless Curtis Martin wants to play for five more seasons. His yards-per-carry average (4.2) probably knocks him below the top 3-4 backs of all-time, but Emmitt will be known as the game's best workhorse. He will sign a one-day contract so he can retire a Cowboy.

Despite a few reports to the contrary, Emmitt Smith will announce his retirement Thursday.

Leave it to Emmitt to create a media controversy and plenty of attention with his retirement. It's a perfect time to hang them up, though. The surprisingly productive 2004 season in Arizona will be the last thing we remember about him.

ESPN is confirming a St. Paul Pioneer Press report that Emmitt Smith will retire this offseason.

He may join an investment group trying to buy the Minnesota Vikings. If true, the league's all-time leading rusher will finish his career with 18,355 yards.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Emmitt Smith will retire today to join the investment group that is trying to buy the Vikings.

It's a surprising story, considering Smith was quoted in different articles yesterday saying he wanted to continue playing, and eventually retire as a Cowboy.

Emmitt Smith sounds like he wants to play again next season - if someone wants him.

The Cardinals aren't likely to. "I can make a decision based upon whether I want to continue or not, but still somebody has to make a decision on whether or not they want me to continue. That part is out of my hands," Smith said.

Emmitt Smith rushed 23 times for 69 yards, possibly in his last NFL game.

We bet Emmitt will return as a backup somewhere, but not in Arizona.

Emmitt Smith appears to be leaning towards returning next year.

We're reading between the lines, but Smith still feels like he has a lot to give a team. He'd be a relatively attractive backup for some team.

Emmitt Smith rushed for 65 yards on 23 carries, but didn't get into the end zone today.

He had a decent year, given his age and team, but this could have been his swan song.

Emmitt Smith left today's game briefly with a migraine headache, not a shoulder injury.

He'll be ready to go next week versus the Bucs.

Emmitt Smith rushed for 71 yards on 19 carries in week 15.

You could actually see Smith smiling during one 20-yard run in the second half. Smith reportedly may be interested in returning to Dallas next season as a backup, if they'd have him.

Emmitt Smith has left today's game with an apparent shoulder injury or neck stinger.

It didn't look too bad, but his return is questionable.

Emmitt Smith wants to play football next year, but it isn't likely to happen with the Cardinals.

Smith said criticism of Dennis Green earlier this week was taken out of context. That notwithstanding, Smith should be able to get an offer from some team as a backup running back if he wants to.

Emmitt Smith sat out practice Wednesday, but will be ready to start Sunday's game versus St. Louis.

The Rams have trouble stopping anyone on the ground, so Emmitt could post another 75-yard, 1 TD-type game.

Emmitt Smith suggested after last night's game that he may want to play again next season.

"I still think I can be a 1,000-yard back for the Cardinals or for anybody," he said. "You've seen me perform this year." Smith went on to say that he's "failed" in Arizona because they haven't made the playoffs.
