The Bears intend to keep Roberto Garza at center this season.
Although arguably Chicago's best offensive lineman over the past several seasons, Garza has ranked near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' rankings at center. Protecting Jay Cutler remains an issue in Chicago, and Bears beat writers wouldn't be surprised if Garza is eventually moved to guard in an effort to get the best players on the field. The draft will likely determine where Garza lines up this season. Apr 16 - 1:43 PM

Bears C Roberto Garza triggered an escalator in his contract, raising his 2013 salary from $1.75 million to $2.05 million.

Garza, 33, has missed just two starts over the last seven seasons. Although he's been the model of consistency, Garza has been near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' annual center rankings over the last couple seasons. He has one year left on his deal.

Bears signed G/C Roberto Garza to a two-year, $6.55 extension.

The deal includes $2.6 million in guarantees and keeps Garza under contract through 2013. Garza has been a steadying force on a shaky Bears offensive line, playing both right guard and center over the past two seasons. The signing is good news for both Matt Forte and Jay Cutler moving forward.

The Bears plan to start Roberto Garza at center unless there's a problem with one of the guards.

The plan has to be written in light pencil because failed 2008 first-rounder Chris Williams is at left guard and failed onetime starter Lance Louis is at right guard. Former Seahawks center Chris Spencer would join the starting lineup if Garza is forced to move. We're skeptical that the Bears have upgraded the O-Line at all.

The Bears will likely kick RG Roberto Garza to center if Olin Kreutz walks in free agency.

Breaking in a new center at this point in the offseason really isn't an option. If Kruetz does depart, the Bears will likely seek a guard in free agency. Still, the Bears are expected to make re-signing Kreutz their top priority, so this will likely be a moot point.

Roberto Garza is expected to remain the Bears' starting right guard in 2011.

For good reason, too. The offensive line showed tremendous improvement on passing plays as well as running plays when Garza returned from a knee scope to slide over to the right side in Week 9. Left guard remains a question mark with Chris Williams' future up in the air.

Bears RG Roberto Garza (knee surgery) returned to practice Monday.

It was expected, even though Garza is just two weeks removed from arthroscopic knee surgery. He'll re-enter the starting lineup at right guard in Week 9, with Chris Williams holding down Garza's former spot at left guard.

Bears G Roberto Garza (knee surgery) will start at right guard when he returns in Week 9 following the team's Week 8 bye.

Garza had been playing left guard, but Chris Williams is now working there. The veteran made 64 consecutive starts at right guard from 2006 through 2009, so the transition will be smooth.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said he expects LG Roberto Garza (knee surgery) to be ready to play in Week 9.

Smith also said he is anticipating S Major Wright's and CB Zack Bowman's return after the bye week. It's not a given that Garza regains his starting job.

Bears LG Roberto Garza (knee surgery) is expected to be sidelined 10-14 days.

Garza had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, but the procedure lasted only 20 minutes and he's already walking. He isn't guaranteed his starting job when he does return, though.

According to head coach Lovie Smith, Bears LG Roberto Garza underwent successful arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday.

Garza may not have a starting job when he recovers, as he was struggling in both pass and run blocking before his surgery. There is no timetable for his return.

Bears LG Roberto Garza is out indefinitely after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

He may not have a starting job upon return, pending the results of LT Chris Williams' conversion to left guard. The Bears have changed their left tackle, right tackle, and both starting guards since the beginning of the season. Garza was struggling in both pass and run blocking before the surgery.

Roberto Garza recently practiced at LG with Lance Louis taking his spot at RG.

If Garza can make a successful adjustment it's the best move for the team. Says line coach Mike Tice, "If I look up right guard in the dictionary, I see a picture of Lance Louis."

Bears signed G/C Roberto Garza to a six-year contract extension.

The fourth round pick started seven games at both guard spots this year and is an excellent interior run-blocker.

Chicago Bears OL Roberto Garza is expected to start the season at one of the guard positions.

Garza is solid. He'll solidify the offensive line in Chicago. Thsi shouldnt' really effect Cedric Benson or Rex Grossman too much.
