Bears signed C Roberto Garza to a one-year extension through 2015.
Garza turns 36 in March, but the Bears have been pleased by his play despite sub-par marks from Pro Football Focus. Garza remains an effective run blocker, but is PFF's No. 21 center among 40 qualifiers entering Week 17, often getting abused in pass protection. Even if Garza starts for one more year, GM Phil Emery needs to begin considering a center of the future. Dec 26 - 2:08 PM

A source tells ESPN Chicago that C Roberto Garza suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Bills.

Starting left guard Matt Slauson also suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of the second half. Both appear likely to miss time, putting stress on an offensive line that turned the corner last season. Brian de la Puente is the backup center and Michael Ola is the top backup at guard. Free agent Eben Britton was in for a visit Monday.

Roberto Garza suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's Week 1 loss to Buffalo.

Garza expects to be "fine," but is in a walking boot and will go for an MRI Monday. The Bears also lost LG Matt Slauson to an ankle injury this week, though both could return without missing time.

Roberto Garza is expected to retain the starting center job despite the signing of Brian De La Puente.

Garza is a team captain, offensive line signal caller and 16-game starter for the Bears in seven of the last eight seasons. De La Puente was signed as quality insurance in case the 35-year-old breaks down. Both Garza and De La Puente are operating on one-year deals.

Bears re-signed C Roberto Garza to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Garza, 34, has been with the Bears since 2005. The team captain and O-Line signal caller has started all 16 games in each of the last three seasons, grading out as PFF's No. 12 center among 35 qualifiers a year ago. The major leap forward the Bears offensive line took last season will be intact. Garza's $1.5 million deal is identical to the one signed by Lions C Dominic Raiola earlier this month.

Coach Marc Trestman confirmed at the Combine that the Bears want to re-sign free agent C Roberto Garza.

"We feel like he should finish his career with the Bears," said Trestman. Garza turns 35 next month, but is still playing at a high enough level to start one more year in Chicago. Garza should be affordable for the Bears to retain.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Bears have expressed interest in re-signing free agent C Roberto Garza.

Garza has spent the last nine seasons with the Bears and seems likely to return on a team-friendly contract. Rotoworld ranks Garza as the No. 7 free agent center available this offseason.
Feb 1 - 10:03 PM

The Bears intend to keep Roberto Garza at center this season.

Although arguably Chicago's best offensive lineman over the past several seasons, Garza has ranked near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' rankings at center. Protecting Jay Cutler remains an issue in Chicago, and Bears beat writers wouldn't be surprised if Garza is eventually moved to guard in an effort to get the best players on the field. The draft will likely determine where Garza lines up this season.

Bears C Roberto Garza triggered an escalator in his contract, raising his 2013 salary from $1.75 million to $2.05 million.

Garza, 33, has missed just two starts over the last seven seasons. Although he's been the model of consistency, Garza has been near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' annual center rankings over the last couple seasons. He has one year left on his deal.

Bears signed G/C Roberto Garza to a two-year, $6.55 extension.

The deal includes $2.6 million in guarantees and keeps Garza under contract through 2013. Garza has been a steadying force on a shaky Bears offensive line, playing both right guard and center over the past two seasons. The signing is good news for both Matt Forte and Jay Cutler moving forward.

The Bears plan to start Roberto Garza at center unless there's a problem with one of the guards.

The plan has to be written in light pencil because failed 2008 first-rounder Chris Williams is at left guard and failed onetime starter Lance Louis is at right guard. Former Seahawks center Chris Spencer would join the starting lineup if Garza is forced to move. We're skeptical that the Bears have upgraded the O-Line at all.

The Bears will likely kick RG Roberto Garza to center if Olin Kreutz walks in free agency.

Breaking in a new center at this point in the offseason really isn't an option. If Kruetz does depart, the Bears will likely seek a guard in free agency. Still, the Bears are expected to make re-signing Kreutz their top priority, so this will likely be a moot point.

Roberto Garza is expected to remain the Bears' starting right guard in 2011.

For good reason, too. The offensive line showed tremendous improvement on passing plays as well as running plays when Garza returned from a knee scope to slide over to the right side in Week 9. Left guard remains a question mark with Chris Williams' future up in the air.

Bears RG Roberto Garza (knee surgery) returned to practice Monday.

It was expected, even though Garza is just two weeks removed from arthroscopic knee surgery. He'll re-enter the starting lineup at right guard in Week 9, with Chris Williams holding down Garza's former spot at left guard.

Bears G Roberto Garza (knee surgery) will start at right guard when he returns in Week 9 following the team's Week 8 bye.

Garza had been playing left guard, but Chris Williams is now working there. The veteran made 64 consecutive starts at right guard from 2006 through 2009, so the transition will be smooth.
