Former Texans and Falcons FB Justin Griffith has retired from football and taken a quality control coach job with the Raiders.
Griffith, 32, got the job thanks to longtime pal Greg Knapp, under whom he played his entire career. Knapp is Oakland's new offensive coordinator. Griffith lasted seven seasons in the league, finding a niche as a versatile fullback in Knapp's zone-blocking offenses. He scored 13 career all-purpose touchdowns. Fri, Feb 3, 2012 01:02:00 PM

Texans placed FB Justin Griffith on injured reserve with a spinal cord concussion, ending his season.

Recovery timetables from spinal cord concussions are highly unpredictable, so it's unclear if he'll be released later with an injury settlement. Griffth was already on the roster bubble, battling for a spot behind Vonta Leach.

Texans signed FB Justin Griffith, formerly of the Seahawks.

Griffith, 30, has spent virtually his entire career with Greg Knapp, who this offseason replaced Kyle Shanahan as Houston's offensive coordinator. Griffith will try to make the roster as a versatile reserve behind Vonta Leach.

Seahawks released FB Justin Griffith.

Griffith's knee clearly wasn't ready to go, and the Seahawks didn't want to wait. OT Kyle Williams was signed to the active roster to take his place. Griffith has a good chance of being re-signed by the Seahawks next week.

The Seahawks named Justin Griffith their starting fullback over Owen Schmitt.

Schmitt provides more pop as a blocker, but Griffith is versed in OC Greg Knapp's offense and more versatile as a catcher and perhaps short-yardage option. Schmitt will stay "up" on Sundays because he plays special teams.

Seahawks signed FB Justin Griffith to a one-year contract.

Griffith, 29, was released by the Raiders in February after a torn ACL ended his 2008 season. He offers versatility as a pass catcher and short-yardage option, but Owen Schmitt's lead-blocking job shouldn't be in any danger.

Raiders released FB Justin Griffith.

Griffith, 28, tore his ACL in October and was never a big part of Oakland's offense after coming from Atlanta. The writing was on the wall when the Raiders cut ties with Griffith's old friend, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

Raiders FB Justin Griffith has been diagnosed with a torn ACL. He will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season, and have surgery this week.

Oakland loses some ball-carrying ability in two-back sets with Griffith gone, but can just plug in Luke Lawton or use two of their tailbacks together. Griffith, 28, finishes with 11 touches for 87 total yards and a TD. He'd cost $1.1 million for the Raiders to bring back in 2009.

Justin Griffith caught a two-yard touchdown pass against the Ravens in Week 8. He sustained a knee injury on the play when he was hit by Ray Lewis and did not return.

Griffith will have an MRI and be evaluated this week, but whether or not he plays in Week 9 he's not a fantasy option.

Raiders agreed to terms with fullback Justin Griffith, formerly of the Falcons, on a three-year, $3.8 million contract.

The Raiders' backfield is now quite full, and on paper it would appear they're poised to use a running back by committee. Griffith averaged 5.6 yards-per-carry in 2006 and is a capable receiver, though he'll be hard pressed to become a factor in fantasy football. This could spell the end of Zack Crockett's tenure in Oakland and leaves ReShard Lee, Joe Echemandu, and Justin Fargas possibly competing for a roster spot.

The Packers and free agent Justin Griffith were believed to be in contract talks Wednesday night, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

It's uncertain how serious the negotiations were. The Packers are looking for someone to compete with Brandon Miree in their zone-blocking scheme, and Griffith has played in the system for the last three years.

Justin Griffith will visit the Packers Tuesday.

He'd be a nice fit for an offense that could use some experience and versatility in the backfield. Griffith is a decent blocker and can catch the ball well.
