Patriots released TE Alge Crumpler.
Combined, the Patriots' cuts of Crumpler, Nick Kaczur, and Ty Warren saved $8.9 million in base salary. The salary cap savings are lower, however, particularly for Warren. Crumpler underwent major offseason shoulder surgery and probably wasn't fully recovered. The 33-year-old might return later on. Fri, Jul 29, 2011 03:10:00 PM

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss expects the Patriots to keep TE Alge Crumpler in the final year of his contract.

Crumpler's pass-catching skills have vanished and he's coming off "extensive" shoulder surgery with a $2.4 million salary. We don't consider him a lock to return -- especially after the Pats drafted blocking specialist Lee Smith -- but Crumpler does have value when healthy. He's a ferocious run blocker.

Patriots TE Alge Crumpler underwent "extensive" shoulder surgery in late January.

Crumpler reportedly played through the injury all year. Whether he'll be ready for training camp is unclear, but the fact that he got surgery out of the way so early in the offseason increases Crumpler's chances. Now 33 years old, Crumpler is essentially a sixth offensive lineman. He played in all 16 games, but caught just six passes for 52 yards and two TDs in 2010.

The Patriots are expected to retain 33-year-old blocking tight end Alge Crumpler for 2011.

Crumpler is due $2.4M in his contract year. The veteran graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 run-blocking tight end, a role he will continue in next season. Crumpler is also a mentor for Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Alge Crumpler caught three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown against the Jets in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Crumpler cost both teams a touchdown. As PFT's Gregg Rosenthal suggested, Crumpler did his best Ben Watson impression saving a touchdown by chasing down Jets LB David Harris while also dropping a pass he should have caught in the end zone. He did work to get open later in the game for a 2-yard score. The Pats' blocking tight end and team leader is under contract for $2.4 million next season.

Free agent acquisition Alge Crumpler is willing to take on any role Patriots coach Bill Belichick has planned for him.

Although he signed a two-year, $4.8 million deal with New England in March, the four-time Pro Bowler is expected to fall in line with previous Pats TEs and serve primarily as a blocker. While Crumpler has had a solid 10-year NFL career, you can do better for fantasy purposes.

After spending the last six weeks working on getting in shape with a specialist, Alge Crumpler is expected to report to Patriots offseason workouts on Monday.

Crumpler, who is listed at 266 pounds, was apparently well over that. It's important that Crumpler is in shape, but he won't be counted on as a pass-catcher this season. At age 32, he's lost his speed and the Patriots drafted talented tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Crumpler will strictly be a blocker no matter how ripped he is.

Alge Crumpler's two-year deal with the Patriots has a base value of $4.8 million and includes a $1 million signing bonus.

It's a blocking tight end's deal, unless you're Brandon Manumaleuna. Crumpler is slated to receive base salaries of $1.4 million in 2010 and $2.4 million in 2011. His status with the team will essentially be year to year.

Patriots signed TE Alge Crumpler, formerly of the Titans, to a two-year contract.

Crumpler caught just 27 passes for 222 yards (career-low 8.2 YPC) and one touchdown last season. Now 32, he's no more than a sixth offensive lineman. The Patriots, though, are desperate for tight end help and rarely use the position in a pass catching role. Crumpler won't have any trouble fitting in.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick confirmed Monday that the team is negotiating with free agent Alge Crumpler, but nothing is finalized yet.

The Boston papers are treating this as a done deal, and it may be soon, but Crumpler hasn't been announced as a Patriot just yet. The addition wouldn't prevent New England from drafting a pass-catching tight end next month.

The player rep for free agent Alge Crumpler confirmed Friday that his client is close to signing with the Patriots.

"We are closing in on a deal," said agent Butch Williams. Crumpler, 32, would help New England's ground game as a blocker, but offers little as a receiver.

The Patriots have reportedly agreed to terms with TE Alge Crumpler.

Crumpler would jump to the top of the depth chart after the losses of Ben Watson and Chris Baker, but he's purely a blocking tight end as this stage of his career. The Pats remain likely to pick up a pass-catching tight end in the second round of the draft.

The talks between free agent TE Alge Crumpler and the Titans are expected to continue.

The Patriots have had Crumpler in for a visit, but there's reportedly mutual interest between Crumpler and the Titans. The blocking tight end has averaged just 25.5 catches for 239.5 yards in his two seasons.

The Patriots are hosting TE Alge Crumpler for a free agent visit.

New England is the first team to show serious interest in Crumpler. He is a punishing blocker, a quality the Pats value first and foremost in tight ends.

The Titans remain in talks with free agent TE Alge Crumpler about a contract extension.

Crumpler's agent believes a deal can be worked out even if the sides don't come to an agreement by midnight. "It is mutual," said the agent. "He respects them and they respect him, so we'll be all right."
