Former Bears and Falcons OT Kevin Shaffer has retired from football.
The 32-year-old has "no plans to return." Now pursuing a coaching career, Shaffer is currently working with draft-eligibles at the Senior Bowl and in pre-Combine training. Shaffer was considered one of the NFL's top zone-blocking left tackles during the early- to mid-2000s with Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn. He later busted in power-blocking schemes with Cleveland and Chicago. Thu, Jan 26, 2012 12:16:00 PM

Bears released OT Kevin Shaffer.

Shaffer, 31, was a poor fit for Mike Martz's offense because he doesn't pass protect well. His strength has always been as a run blocker. Shaffer might resurface elsewhere, but it would need to be as a right tackle only in a power-blocking offense. He lacks versatility and athleticism.

The Bears are expected to release OT Kevin Shaffer this offseason.

Shaffer is due $2 million in 2011, including a $250,000 offseason workout bonus the Bears probably wouldn't be willing to pay if he's not in their plans. A utility man at best, the 31-year-old struggled in two 2010 spot starts.

Bears OL Kevin Shaffer might not make the final roster cut.

Offensive line coach Mike Tice gave Shaffer the second-highest grade (behind Olin Kreutz) for the 2009 season, but the Bears might decide to go younger (and cheaper) with their backups. Johan Asiata, J'Marcus Webb and James Marten appear to be ahead of Shaffer in the pecking order.

Veteran OL Kevin Shaffer is no longer in the mix to start at left guard this year.

Shaffer will likely be relegated to a swing role. Johan Asiata, a second-year undrafted free agent out of UNLV, took the bulk of the first-team snaps on Wednesday. Lance Louis and veteran Josh Beekman are in the mix as well. The Bears can't expect dramatic improvement up front this year.

Bears OL Kevin Shaffer is getting a shot to nail down the left guard spot this year.

He's swapping positions with RT Frank Omiyale, who worked at left guard last year. Shaffer, a tackle for the majority of his career, may be more valuable in a swing capacity with Josh Beekman retaining the starting job.

Kevin Shaffer is "entrenched" at right tackle, according to beat writer Brad Biggs.

With the Orlando Pace experiment failing, the Bears are moving forward with Chris Williams and Shaffer as their tackles. Some stability on the line can only help the causes of Jay Cutler and Matt Forte.

Bears agreed to terms with OT Kevin Shaffer on a three-year contract.

A 47-game starter for Cleveland from 2006-2008, Shaffer has been durable throughout his career and can play both tackle spots. His strength is in the run game, making Shaffer a good fit in Chicago. He will likely be penciled in at swing tackle behind LT Chris Williams and RT Frank Omiyale for now.

Free agent OT Kevin Shaffer says he "would definitely like" to play for the Bears.

Shaffer, 29, has missed just one game in the last three seasons and can play both the right and left sides. He could be a swing tackle while pushing to Frank Omiyale to start. The Bears could always kick Omiyale back inside.

Browns released RT Kevin Shaffer.

Shaffer was due a $1.5 million roster bonus in addition to carrying a cap number over $6 million for 2009. According to Shaffer's agent, the Browns remain interested in re-signing Shaffer to a lower deal.

Browns RT Kevin Shaffer suffered a concussion in Sunday's win.

He was replaced by Isaac Sowells. Shaffer's lucky he has the upcoming bye week to shake it off and get ready for Giants LE Justin Tuck in Week 6.

Browns RT Kevin Shaffer missed practice on Wednesday after injuring his knee on Sunday.

Shaffer was able to finish the game, but has been in pain all week, and thinks he might miss time this week. Former RT Ryan Tucker could shift outside in Shaffer's absence.

Kevin Shaffer is now seeing most of the snaps at right tackle for Cleveland.

Joe Thomas appears to be taking over on the blind side. The Browns will either try to move Shaffer before Week 1, or let him battle Ryan Tucker.

The Browns "do not seem inclined" to trade OL Kevin Shaffer, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal.

While Shaffer's agent asked that his client be traded, the player himself did not say the same in a recent meeting with coach Romeo Crennel. For now, Shaffer's best bet is to stick around and try to win the right tackle job.

Browns OL Kevin Shaffer's agent intends to ask the team for permission to seek out a trade for his client.

The Giants are believed to have a degree of interest, but only if Cleveland lowers its asking price of a third- or fourth-round pick. Other teams in need of offensive tackles include the Texans, Chiefs, and Dolphins.
