Steelers released C Justin Hartwig.

The Steelers unsurprisingly found no takers for their 2009 starter. The 31-year-old is no longer even an average run blocker, but he could land an interior swing role elsewhere. Pittsburgh's running game is in better shape with Maurkice Pouncey taking over.

The Steelers are reportedly set to release C Justin Hartwig and OG Kraig Urbik.

Cutting ties with Hartwig is no surprise. The 31-year-old was beaten out by rookie Maurkice Pouncey, and he's been an albatross as a run blocker. Profootballtalk reports that the Steelers will try to trade him before releasing him. Urbik was overmatched from the beginning after the Steelers wasted a third-round pick on him last season.

Steelers C Justin Hartwig admitted that he's worried about his future now that he's been displaced by rookie Maurkice Pouncey.

Hartwig signed a four-year extension with the Steelers before the 2009 season, but struggled badly as a run blocker last year and is set to earn $2.08 million this season. It's expensive depth.

Justin Hartwig will start at center on Saturday, but rookie Maurkice Pouncey will also get reps with the first team.

Hartwig is holding on to his gig for dear life, but it's only a matter of time before Pouncey takes over.

Steelers C Justin Hartwig admitted that he suffered a torn labrum against the Raiders in Week 13 last year.

It's pretty impressive that Hartwig played out the final four weeks with such a severe injury. After undergoing offseason surgery, he should be ready to bounce back. Hartwig is being pushed by Doug Legursky at center.

Steelers C Justin Hartwig (shoulder) was limited in minicamp.

Hartwig is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, so Doug Legursky is filling in. The Steelers' starting center is fully expected to be ready for training camp. His job security remains tenuous, though.

Steelers C Justin Hartwig and S Ryan Mundy are both rehabbing from shoulder surgeries.

This is the first we've heard of a shoulder injury for either player. We'd expect both to be fine for the offseason program.

Steelers signed C Justin Hartwig to an extension totaling four years and $10 million.

The deal includes a $2.1M signing bonus. Hartwig was the team's most consistent lineman last season. Not exactly high praise, we know, but the veteran should anchor the interior line with right guard Darnell Stapleton's (knee surgery) future in question. This will reportedly be the final extension the Steelers will do this season.

Steelers C Justin Hartwig (knee) returned to practice with the first team and will start against the Ravens Sunday.

His status was never too much in question, but it was good to see him out with the first team for the first time this week.

Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians says C Justin Hartwig has been the team's most consistent lineman this season.

It's not saying much considering the rest of Pittsburgh's shaky line, but Hartwig has been a steal after signing a contract for just over the minimum in March. He's also stayed healthy, something Hartwig could not do in Carolina.

The Steelers have named Justin Hartwig their starting center.

He beat out Sean Mahan, who now will be a utility guard-center behind Hartwig, Chris Kemoeatu, and Kendall Simmons. Pittsburgh is averaging 3.7 yards per carry this preseason, led by Rashard Mendenhall's 4.3 mark.

Steelers signed C Justin Hartwig to a two-year, $3.725 million contract. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Hartwig got $975,000 to sign.

Hartwig, 29, wasn't exceptional for Carolina after undergoing hernia surgery in 2006, but is well worth this mild risk. He figures to start in 2008, with Sean Mahan possibly kicking to guard to battle Chris Kemoeatu and a rookie.

The Chiefs are planning to visit with free agent C Justin Hartwig this week.

The Chiefs have only two legitimate starting linemen on their current roster (counting mediocre at best tackle Damion McIntosh). They can offer Hartwig a better deal than the Steelers, who hosted him at the end of last week.

The Steelers met free agent C Justin Hartwig and S Donnie Nickey on Friday.

Nickey is a special teamer. The Steelers want competition for Sean Mahan at center, but after Ben Roethlisberger's signing, have less cap room than any other team. They may only be able to offer deals for around the minimum.
