Jonathan Ogden will formally announce his retirement on Thursday
He'll tell team officials Wednesday. The 11-time Pro Bowler considered playing one more year, but wasn't confident his balky toe would allow him to play at a high level. The Ravens will start former supplemental pick Jared Gaither at left tackle this season and may sign Barry Sims for depth. Ogden is a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer; don't let anyone tell you different. Wed, Jun 11, 2008 01:20:00 PM

The Baltimore Sun reports that Jonathan Ogden will retire, and could announce the decision in the coming "week or so."

The first ballot Hall of Famer has reportedly let people around him know he's retiring, but hasn't told coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens weren't expecting him to return necessarily, but this is a massive blow to the entire offense, which loses its best player. The Ravens may still try to change Ogden's mind, but otherwise have decent options in Jared Gaither or Adam Terry.

Asked about Jonathan Ogden's status with the Ravens on Wednesday, coach John Harbaugh could provide no update.

"No time table that I’ve heard," Harbaugh said. "I don’t think there’s any change. I don’t have a gut feeling about it." It's unclear if Ogden has been in communication with the club. He is considering retirement.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome reiterated at the team's post-draft press conference that he has not heard from Jonathan Ogden recently.

Baltimore drafted right tackle prospects Oniel Cousins and David Hale. The picks likely indicate that if Ogden retires, Jared Gaither and 2007 RT Adam Terry will battle on the blind side. The team is open to taking Ogden back.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome says he hasn't spoken with Jonathan Ogden in a "few weeks" regarding whether the future Hall of Famer will retire.

Newsome says Ogden's situation won't affect any draft plans. The Ravens say they feel good about their tackles, with Marshal Yanda, Adam Terry, and Jared Gaither on the roster. Gaither may have been a first-round pick had he stayed at Maryland in 2007 instead of entering the supplemental draft.
Thu, Apr 17, 2008 09:36:00 AM's Peter King hears that Jonathan Ogden is having "fleeting thoughts" about playing football again in 2008.

Ogden was reportedly "certain" he'd retire just after the Ravens' disappointing 2007 season, but has been impressed with new coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens would welcome Ogden back, but need an answer soon.

Ravens T Jonathan Ogden says he will likely decide whether to retire before the NFL Draft, and that he won't participate in Baltimore's upcoming minicamp.

Because of their new coach, the Ravens are one of the few teams with a minicamp before the draft. Ogden appears to be leaning towards retirement, "If I had to make a decision today, I probably would say I would retire." Baltimore will probably target tackles regardless of Ogden's plans.

Jonathan Ogden said the Ravens "know to proceed with their offseason plans as if I'm retiring."

Ogden recently taped up his toe and tried to run. "It just hasn't healed 100 percent, and I don't know if it will," Ogden told the Review-Journal. "I can still play, but ... I don't want to play if I can't play at the level I'm capable of playing at."

Mike Flynn, recently cut by the Ravens, thinks Jonathan Ogden will retire.

Ogden and Flynn were close. "I know last year when they released Edwin (Mulitalo) it was tough on me, and I know Jonathan felt that way about Edwin, too," Flynn said. "For Jonathan with a new coaching staff and a new system... Sometimes, that’s when the gas tank goes on ‘E.’ He’s going to be the best tackle to ever play the game. What else is there for him to accomplish?"

The Ravens have restructured the contract of T Jonathan Ogden from $7.5 million to $2.5 million.

The difference was likely converted into bonuses if Ogden attends offseason camps, and there's a chance those will never be paid, as Ogden is still leaning toward retirement. The move gives the Ravens about $11.3 million in cap space, most of which will used on Terrell Suggs.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says he thinks Jonathan Ogden is "right on the fence" about retiring or playing in 2008.

"He's torn," Harbaugh says. "He's trying to figure out what he wants to do, and he's going to take his time." The Ravens would certainly like to have Ogden back, but he indicated last month that he's leaning towards retirement.

Ravens LT Jonathan Ogden indicated Monday that he's leaning towards calling it a career

The future Hall of Famer endorsed new coach John Harbaugh, but doesn't want to go through another season of constant treatment for his troublesome left foot. Ogden was long unhappy with coach Brian Billick's inconsistent play calling, and it was thought that the hiring of new OC Cam Cameron, who is know for balanced game plans, might influence Ogden to play another year.

Jonathan Ogden says he would not want to play for the Ravens if Marty Schottenheimer is hired as Brian Billick's replacement.

He acknowledges Schottenheimer would "probably" be the best fit of all the candidates for Baltimore, but pointed out that Marty "had Bruce Smith doing the Oklahoma drill when he was with the Redskins." Ogden's decision to retire or return will likely be influenced heavily by who the Ravens hire.

Ravens LT Jonathan Ogden says he's even more unsure about his retirement plans due to the uncertainty of the team's coaching staff.

Ogden was never a big proponent of Brian Billick, but says "when you play 13 years, you want to know about training camp and how many offseason camps you have to attend. I will definitely look at the situation." Ogden expects to make an announcement on his future in the next few months.

Ravens LT Jonathan Ogden acted as if Sunday's game was his last in the NFL.

Ogden wouldn't officially announce his retirement, but was seen taking pictures with his family behind the bench. "It's been a pleasure playing for this city, this team, these fans," Ogden said. "This city and me, we've grown together with this team. So I'm just grateful to have been a part of it."
