Wire was previously scheduled for unrestricted free agency. Though he's of little assistance on defense, the 32-year-old Falcons special teams captain racked up eight tackles in kickoff and punt coverage last season.

Impending free agent LB Coy Wire is reportedly close to agreeing to terms with the Falcons.

Wire took over for Michael Boley as the strong side linebacker on early downs last year, providing improved run defense. Boley won't be brought back and Keith Brooking's future is in question, so the Falcons will need the veteran depth.

Coy Wire has replaced Michael Boley as the Falcons strong side linebacker on early downs.

Boley has retained the nickel back role, but Wire is giving the team a lift with stronger run defense. Wire finished with second on the team with eight solo tackles and also broke up a pass. He figures to keep the role going forward.

Wire, once an integral piece of Buffalo's special teams, will likely perform the same duties in Atlanta. Adams is a CB/S who also can track down kicks.

Wire is coming off neck surgery that included nerve damage and couldn't pass his exit physical. He also doesn't have a clear position on defense.

Bills LB Coy Wire will undergo surgery on his neck this offseason.

The reserve had nerve damage as a result of a neck stinger he suffered late in 2007. It's uncertain when he'll be able to resume football activities.

The converted safety worked full time at linebacker for the first time in his career in 2007, but didn't play much due to injuries. He'll return to back up Keith Ellison on the weak side and play special teams in 2008.

Bills LB Coy Wire suffered a grade 2 MCL sprain in Sunday's loss.

Wire was on crutches after the game and coach Dick Jauron declared him "out indefinitely" on Monday. With usual starting weak-side 'backer Keith Ellison out with a high ankle sprain, Mario Haggan is next in line for snaps.

Buffalo's run defense is in bad shape. Wire, a converted safety, is unlikely to be nearly as effective as Keith Ellison (ankle). The Bills will host Denver in the opener, then travel to Pittsburgh and New England for Weeks 2 and 3.
