Redskins ILB London Fletcher said he'd consider returning in 2014 for a playoff contender.
Fletcher announced two weeks ago that he was "99 percent certain" that he will retire at the end of the 2013 season. When asked what the one percent was left for, Fletcher said, "It would have to be maybe a team that has six games left, a playoff contender. It won’t be for a 16-game season." Fletcher's contract with the Redskins expires after this season. He'll turn 39 in May. Fri, Dec 27, 2013 08:48:00 AM

Redskins MLB London Fletcher announced on Wednesday that he's "99 percent certain" that he will retire at the end of the season.

What a career it has been for the former undrafted rookie out of John Carroll. He was signed by the Rams in 1998 and won the team's Rookie of the Year award before taking over as the starting middle linebacker in 1999 and leading the Super Bowl champion Rams in tackles. Fletcher, 38, has yet to miss a game in his 16-year career. He's a four-time Pro Bowler -- all with the Redskins. Fletcher led the NFL in tackles from 2000-09, racking up 1,244 stops. He also spent five seasons with the Bills. Fletcher's likely headed for the Hall of Fame.

Redskins MLB London Fletcher sustained a sprained ankle during the fourth quarter of Sunday's Week 13 loss to the Giants.

Fletcher said he wouldn't know how severe the sprain is until Monday. The league's leader in consecutive games played at a remarkable 252 should be considered questionable for the Week 14 home game against the Chiefs. Fletcher is having yet another solid IDP season, averaging 7.0 tackles per game to go with two sacks and one forced fumble.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher is taking some plays off this season.

Fletcher, the league's leader at 243 consecutive games played, has almost never come off the field during his 16-year career. But this year, he's allowing backup Nick Barnett to give him a series or two off per game. Fletcher is averaging just 7.6 tackles per game so far this year after getting 8.6 in 2012 and 10.3 in 2011.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher says he dealt with "balance issues" early last season after suffering a concussion in the preseason.

The Redskins never announced Fletcher's injury, and he missed just one preseason game. Fletcher says his balance issues continued through late October, but claims they were "something with (his) neck." The fact that Fletcher was still having "balance issues" during the regular season is alarming, and further proof of how far the league still has to go with regards to head injuries. Declining, 2013 is likely to be Fletcher's final season.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher admits he never seriously considered retirement.

"I’m still playing at a high level, the team still wanted me to play," he said. "So, a lot of those things come into play." Despite Fletcher's assertion, his play has slipped in recent seasons. The Skins seem to value his leadership above all else. There's a good chance 2013 will be the 38-year-old's final season.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher (elbow surgery, ankle surgery) has resumed weightlifting.

Fletcher will likely get in very few offseason reps, but should be 100 percent by the time Week 1 rolls around. Going on 38 and entering the final year of his contract, there's a good chance 2013 will be Fletcher's last season.

The Redskins will not ask ILB London Fletcher to restructure his contract.

Fletcher is owed $5.5 million in real money for 2013 and will count $6.2 million against the cap. It's a lot to pay for a 38-year-old that graded out 51st among 53 qualifying inside linebackers last season according to Pro Football Focus, but Fletcher's value stretches deeper. He's the quintessential team leader and defensive coordinator on the field for the Redskins.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher has decided not to retire.

Fletcher will turn 38 in May, but is still playing at a high level. He's never missed a game in his 15-year career and posted 139 tackles last season while once again operating as the heart and soul of the Redskins' defense. He's decided to have ankle surgery Wednesday and an elbow cleanout later this month in order to stay in the game. It's safe to pencil Fletcher in as a solid LB2 in IDP formats once again.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher says he'll return in 2013 if he can "get myself healthy enough to play."

"(If I can) play at the level I am capable of playing, I will be back," Fletcher said on NFL Network. It's essentially the same song Fletcher's been singing all offseason, though this is the first time he's definitively said he'll play if healthy. It's very hard to see Fletcher walking away from $5.5 million.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher still hasn't decided whether he'll play in 2013.

"It’s still a process," Fletcher said. "(When) you get older in your career, you have to evaluate everything. Health is one thing. Can I still do it at the level that I want to do it at and play at?" Fletcher tallied a team-high 139 tackles last season, but struggled at times as he played through a host of minor injuries. He graded out as the third-worst inside linebacker in Pro Football Focus' ratings. He's under contract for $5.5 million. It's doubtful he walks away from that.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen says ILB London Fletcher still has not informed the team on whether he plans to play in 2013.

Allen says Fletcher, 38 in May, has "three or four good years" left in him, so a retirement announcement seems unlikely. Fletcher played in his third Pro Bowl this past season, and he's still probably unwinding after a long season. Due $5.5 million in the final year of his deal, Fletcher hasn't missed a game in 15 years.

London Fletcher has still not told his teammates if he'll be back next season.

Fletcher participated in last week's Pro Bowl, so he's still winding down and contemplating his decision. We'd be surprised if he the final verdict is retirement. Despite operating at age 37, Fletcher ranked eighth in the NFL in tackles, was the unquestioned leader of a team that won seven straight games to close the regular season and played in all 16 games for the 15th consecutive year. He's also due $5.5 million in 2013.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher is unsure whether he will return for a 16th season in 2013.

"I'll take some time," said Fletcher, "to let the emotions of the season kind of get away, refresh a little bit and then sit down with my family and make the decision." The 37-year-old is signed for one more season at $5.5 million. He's still playing at a high level, leading the Redskins with 15 tackles, half a sack and a pass deflection in Sunday's season-ending loss.

Redskins ILB London Fletcher (ankle) is listed as questionable for Monday night against the Giants.

Fletcher and Trent Williams (thigh) were limited in practice Friday and Saturday, but there's been no indication that they won't be available. Fletcher has played in 236 straight games.
