Carolina coach Ron Rivera told Panthers.com on Thursday that he's been "surprised" by the play of rookie CB Daryl Worley.
"I kind of thought he would be a part-time guy that would get some opportunities, but with some of the things that we've done, we put him out there on the field and he's really grown," said Rivera. The Panthers are last in the NFL in pass defense this season, but are hoping Worley and fellow rookie CB James Bradberry can be building blocks for the future of the Carolina secondary. The Panthers D/ST will be a mid-tier fantasy option on the road at Tampa Bay in Week 17. Thu, Dec 29, 2016 09:38:00 PM

Carolina LB Luke Kuechly (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 14 after he failed to clear the last step in the NFL's protocol.

Kuechly suffered the concussion on November 17th against New Orleans and has not played since, although he was a full participant in practice on Friday. Carolina has been gouged for 75 points and 899 total yards of offense in the last two weeks, and the sledding won't get any easier on Sunday against a San Diego offense that scores 27.8 points per game, the third-highest total in the NFL. The Panthers D/ST is not worth starting in Week 14 with fantasy playoff games on the line.

Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 12.

Kuechly suffered the concussion on November 17th, but has yet to be cleared to return to the field. Carolina travels to Oakland in Week 12, where the Panthers D/ST will be a mid-range fantasy option against the Raiders, who own the NFL's fifth-highest scoring offense and have allowed the fewest sacks of any NFL team. Things won't get any easier for Carolina in Week 13, when they visit Seattle.

The Carolina defense was devastated by injuries on Thursday night, losing LB Luke Kuechly (concussion), DE Mario Addison (foot), and CB Leonard Johnson (chest).

The Panthers held on for a 23-20 win over New Orleans, but suffered costly losses along the way. Kuechly's injury was particularly startling, as the star linebacker was visibly shaken and emotional on his way to the locker room and may miss serious time after struggling with concussion issues in 2015. The Panthers D/ST did turn in a solid fantasy effort, tallying three sacks on two turnovers on the night. Carolina is averaging 4.5 sacks per game since a Week 7 bye.

Carolina LB Shaq Thompson (knee) is no longer on the Panthers' injury report and will return to the field on Thursday.

Thompson has missed Carolina's last two games with a sprained knee, but will be back for Thursday night's matchup with New Orleans. The Panthers D/ST has been solid in three games since a Week 7 bye, but will be a hard fantasy option to trust in Week 11 against Drew Brees and company.

The Carolina Panthers have made 19 transactions at the cornerback position since removing the franchise tag from Josh Norman over the offseason.

Poor performance and injuries have plagued the Carolina secondary since Norman's departure, and the team is still look for answers after allowing over 450 passing yards in two of their last three games. The Panthers are also coughing up 8.6 yards per attempt to opposing passers, which ties them for last among NFL defenses in that statistical category. Even at home, the Panthers D/ST is not a trustworthy fantasy option against Arizona in Week 8.

Carolina coach Ron Rivera has "opened up the competition" at cornerback this week as his team prepares to face Tampa Bay.

The Panthers were absolutely torched by Matt Ryan and Julio Jones in Week 4 and will attempt to bounce back by shaking up their secondary. With CB James Bradberry battling turf toe and CB Bene Benwikere coming off an awful performance, Carolina will struggle to find a quick fix. Despite the problems in coverage, the Panthers D/ST is still a startable Week 5 fantasy option against turnover machine Jameis Winston.

Carolina will host the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3, who are last among NFL offenses in rushing yards through two weeks.

The Vikings have racked up just 95 total yards on the ground through two weeks and now will face Carolina without Adrian Peterson (knee). Carolina held San Francisco to 65 rushing yards in Week 2 and will be a tough test for Minnesota's committee of running backs. The Panthers D/ST is a solid fantasy option at home this week.

The Charlotte Observer notes that Carolina DC Sean McDermott will look to protect his rookie cornerbacks in Week 1.

"Look for them to play off the ball in the Panthers’ Cover-3 scheme and concede the short passes to Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders," said the Observer's Mike Persinger. The Panthers lost star CB Josh Norman over the offseason and chose to largely replenish their secondary with youth. The Carolina front-seven should be able to keep the clamps on Denver QB Trevor Siemian, making the Panthers D/ST a top-10 play in Week 1 on the road.

The Carolina Panthers lead the NFL in takeaways, forcing 36 turnovers through 15 games.

The total is boosted by a league-high 22 interceptions, as the Panthers D/ST has been a quality performer in fantasy leagues all season. Carolina has failed to force a turnover in just one game this season and will host Tampa Bay on Sunday, who has handed the ball over five times in the last two weeks. The Panthers D/ST is a top-tier fantasy option this week.

The Carolina defense will look to repeat its Week 14 performance in which the group handed Atlanta a shutout.

Carolina will face Atlanta for the second time in three weeks on Sunday, and the Panthers D/ST racked up four turnovers while holding the Falcons to 230 total yards in their Week 14 matchup. A week after allowing a furious late-game comeback attempt from the New York Giants, the Panthers D/ST will still be a top-five fantasy option against Atlanta, who has coughed the ball up 13 times in the last five weeks.
Thu, Dec 24, 2015 02:59:00 AM

The Carolina defense has allowed just 46.6 rushing yards and 193.8 passing yards over the last five weeks.

The undefeated Panthers are coming off a shutout of the Atlanta Falcons and travel to New York to face the Giants in Week 15. Carolina is in the top-five among NFL defenses in points, rushing yards, and passing yards allowed in what has been a fantastic 2015 season. The Panthers D/ST is a top-five fantasy option in Week 15.
Thu, Dec 17, 2015 01:00:00 AM

The Carolina defense has allowed just 50.0 rushing yards per game over the last five weeks.

Carolina is second among NFL defenses in run defense this season at 87.2 yards per game, but has been as stout as defenses come in recent weeks. Week 14 brings a matchup with Atlanta, who owns a mid-ranked rushing attack in 2015. The Carolina defense has been a fantasy standout this season and should bounce back nicely after a Week 13 shootout at New Orleans. The Panthers D/ST is a top-five fantasy option in Week 14.
Sat, Dec 12, 2015 03:46:00 AM

The Carolina Panthers will look to keep their stellar defensive play rolling in Week 13 at New Orleans.

The matchup isn't the prettiest, as the Saints are third in the NFL in total yardage, but the Carolina defense is too good to sit in fantasy leagues. The Panthers have allowed only 13.3 points per game over the last three weeks while forcing ten turnovers in those games. The Panthers D/ST will be a top fantasy option on the road in Week 13.
Fri, Dec 4, 2015 02:43:00 AM

The Carolina defense has forced 13 turnovers in the last four weeks.

The undefeated Panthers have outscored opponents 137-81 over those four games and will travel to Dallas in Week 12 where they will look to continue their defensive success. Carolina is also third among NFL defenses in sacks this season and will be a top-tier fantasy option at Dallas in Week 12.
