Chris Weinke completed 13-of-22 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown in Week 17 against the Browns.
Weinke falls to 2-18 as an NFL starter, although he avoided being a complete disaster thanks to the 49ers featuring plenty of screens and short throws early. He has no business starting NFL games at this point and likely won't be back in San Francisco next season. Sun, Dec 30, 2007 05:16:00 PM

49ers coach Mike Nolan named Chris Weinke his starting QB for Week 17 on Friday.

Shaun Hill isn't healthy enough to play. Weinke, who has a career record of 2-17, will make his first start since late last season, when he was a member of the Panthers. This will not help Frank Gore or Vernon Davis.

49ers signed QB Chris Weinke, formerly of the Panthers.

They opted for Weinke, 35, over practice squad QB Drew Olson to back up Shaun Hill until Trent Dilfer (head) gets healthy. Weinke hasn't thrown an NFL pass since splitting time with DeAngelo Williams in Carolina's Week 16 game last year. He shared snaps from center with Williams, a running back.

The Vikings will try out free agent QB Chris Weinke on Tuesday.

Say your prayers that Brooks Bollinger doesn't get hurt in Week 10 or that Tarvaris Jackson (concussion) or Kelly Holcomb (neck) is healthy enough to back up, Vikings fans. Doug Johnson will also be attending the tryout.

Free agent Chris Weinke says he's been contacted by the Vikings.

"It would be a perfect fit," Weinke, 34, said. We expect the Vikings to draft a quarterback in April, so he may be competing just for a roster spot.

Panthers released QB Chris Weinke.

What a difference a few ugly starts make. Weinke lost his backup job when he couldn't get the job done late in 2006. He could still get a job elsewhere. Carolina is bringing in Marques Tuiasospo for a visit this week.

Chris Weinke may be in danger of being released by Carolina.

Weinke was ineffective in late-season relief of injured Jake Delhomme and the Panthers are high on youngster Brett Basanez. It would make sense to give Weinke his release; Carolina can't trust him anymore.

QB Chris Weinke completed 4-of-7 passes for 32 yards and one touchdown in Week 16 against Atlanta.

If you've ever wondered whether an NFL team could win a game without a quarterback, you nearly found out. Weinke threw a total of seven passes, was often taken off the field on third down so the Panthers could play RB DeAngelo Williams at quarterback, and repeatedly handed off on second- and third-and-long late in the game. His touchdown came from one yard out after Carolina ran on 14 of 16 opening-drive plays and Weinke attempted two passes in the second half.

Chris Weinke completed 18-of-28 passes for 170 yards and an interception in Week 15. He did not throw a TD or run for any yards.

That's a little more along the lines of what we expect from Weinke, who was pulled late in favor of undrafted rookie Brett Basanez. Weinke will be a mid-level option if he starts against Atlanta in Week 16.

Chris Weinke is all but certain to make another start in Week 15.

His yardage was impressive last week but Weinke is no better than a low tier-two option. Keyshawn Johnson remains a decent WR3 vs. Pittsburgh.

Chris Weinke completed 34-of-61 passes for 423 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in Week 14.

Bizarre performance. Weinke played well in the first half, but his receivers kept dropping passes. After halftime, Weinke was terrible forcing three interceptions that lost Carolina the game. But the Panthers trailed by so much, Weinke racked up a huge amount of garbage time yards. We hear Jake Delhomme may not play next week, so Weinke would be an mid-level QB optin in fantasy leagues.

ESPN confirms that Chris Weinke will start for Carolina on Sunday.

He's not an attractive fantasy play in and of himself but doesn't figure to be a major drag on Steve Smith or Keyshawn Johnson's production.

ESPN's John Clayton reports Chris Weinke will start Sunday.

Jake Delhomme has a strained or torn ligament in his thumb and has been unable to practice the past two days. He's expected to try some individual drills Friday to see if he's healthy enough to back Weinke up. If not, Carolina will sign Brett Basanez from the practice squad.

ESPN's John Clayton reports Chris Weinke has better than a 50 percent chance to start Sunday against the Giants.

Clayton reports that Jake Delhomme indeed does have a torn ligament in his thumb but remains hopeful he'll be able to play Sunday. Delhomme reportedly incurred the ailment in the first quarter against Philadelphia, which helps explain his late-game inaccuracy last Monday night. Weinke would be a mediocre fantasy option versus New York.

Panthers re-signed QB Chris Weinke to a three-year, $4.5 million contract.

There was some talk that Weinke, 34, wanted a starting job. When that clearly wasn't going to materialize, he took the job as Jake Delhomme's backup. Second-year player Stefan Lefors could challenge for the spot this season.
