Nedney has been over 80 percent on field goals for nearly a decade, but the Niners have grown wary of his tweaks and twinges after closing each of the past two years on injured reserve. Special teams coach Brad Seely also has a history with David Akers, who will replace Nedney.

The 49ers are expected to bring in competition for K Joe Nedney this offseason.

Nedney, 38, has made at least 80 percent of his field goals in eight straight seasons, but has ended the last two on I.R. We'd bet on Nedney beating out any competition in training camp, but he's also entering the final year of his contract. Don't be surprised if the Niners draft a kicker late.

Jeff Reed will retain placekicking duties for the remainder of the season. It was initially hoped that Nedney would return from his non-kicking knee injury, but the 49ers' playoff hopes are now circling the drain. Reed isn't an enticing fantasy option kicking for San Francisco's poor offense.

49ers declared K Joe Nedney, QB David Carr, OT Alex Boone, OT Joe Staley, LB Thaddeus Gibson, CB William James, and CB Tramaine Brock inactive for Week 14 against the Seahawks.

Jeff Reed for fill in for Nedney for a second straight week. It was originally thought that Nedney would be placed on injured reserve, but it now looks like he has a chance to kick again later this month. NT Aubrayo Franklin (groin) is active, which hurts Marshawn Lynch's matchup.

Beat writer Matt Maiocco believes that Jeff Reed would not have signed with the 49ers if it didn't mean he would remain the kicker when Joe Nedney (knee) is healthy.

Nedney is signed through 2011, so this news may mean he's headed for injured reserve. Reed will be an inconsistent play down the stretch given the 49ers offensive struggles.

Nedney sat out last week with a strain and a bone bruise on the knee of his right (non-kicking) leg. Shane Andrus filled in for him but didn't attempt a kick as the Niners got shut out. Look elsewhere for your Week 12 kicker needs.

The MRI revealed a strain and a bone bruise, and the Niners expect to reevaluate Nedney in Week 12. The team is auditioning Shane Andrus, Garrett Lindholm, and Swayze Waters to fill in against the Bucs this week.

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area suggests the 49ers will sign another kicker this week with Joe Nedney nursing a right knee injury.

Nedney was able to kick field goals and extra points in Week 10, but his kickoffs suffered. He's only 26th among fantasy kickers in scoring this season, so it's time to drop him for a better option regardless. The Niners are looking at Shane Andrus, Garrett Lindholm, and Swayze Waters.

49ers K Joe Nedney left Sunday's game in the first quarter with a knee injury but was able to return.

Nedney evidently injured his right (non-kicking) knee on the opening kickoff. He didn't miss any kicks, though, as he was able to return later in the first quarter and looks OK.

49ers K Joe Nedney revealed that he's dealt with the same groin problem that has bothered him this summer since he first started kicking 20 years ago.

"When I was 17, I tore it learning how to kick the football," Nedney said. "And, like a dumb kid, just kicked right through it, and it never healed." Nedney now sports a calcified mass around the wound, which causes the groin to flare up once in awhile. It's a condition he's managed for years, and he's not expected to miss time during the season.

49ers K Joe Nedney (hamstring) has been ruled out for the team's season finale against the Rams.

Ricky Schmitt will close out the year as San Francisco's placekicker. Nedney, who signed a three-year deal in the offseason, will return as a starter in 2010. The 37-year-old missed just four field-goal tries in 2009.
