Drew Bennett has retired from football three days after he signed with the Ravens.
An old knee injury was the culprit. Bennett is just 31, but didn't play in 2008 after breaking his foot for the Rams in Week 1. An 80-catch, 1247-yard, 11-TD wideout in Tennessee under OC Mike Heimerdinger in 2004 (and the overall fantasy WR6 that season), Bennett's career faded slowly thereafter. The former UCLA QB and undrafted free agent finishes with 4,412 career yards. Sun, Jul 26, 2009 10:43:00 PM

Ravens agreed to terms with WR Drew Bennett on a one-year, $745,000 contract.

Bennett stood out among D.J. Hackett, Chris Hannon and Justin Brown during Friday morning's workout. The Ravens didn't hear the answer they wanted from Derrick Mason, so they're forced to cover themselves with a veteran receiver. Right now, Bennett is likely second behind Mark Clayton for fantasy potential among Baltimore receivers. That would obviously change if Mason reconsiders his retirement.

The Ravens sent free agent WR Drew Bennett for a physical after Friday morning's workout.

D.J. Hackett was on the way back to the airport, so Bennett appears to be the choice as long as he passes his physical. Should Derrick Mason stay retired, Bennett would be second behind Mark Clayton as far as fantasy potential among Ravens receivers.

Free agent Drew Bennett is the "early favorite" to be signed by the Ravens heading into Friday's tryout of four receivers.

It sounds like Baltimore is going to sign a wideout no matter what Derrick Mason decides. Bennett is a better fit for coordinator Cam Cameron's "digital" offense than D.J. Hackett. Hackett has played most of his career in West Coast systems.

Drew Bennett will be among the four free agent receivers trying out for the Ravens on Friday.

He'll be joined by D.J. Hackett; the identities of the other two working out are unknown. Bennett, 31, received light interest from the Falcons, Browns, Titans, and Bucs this spring. He'd likely settle for the one-year minimum.

Free agent WR Drew Bennett will work out with the Bucs on Tuesday.

He's joined by fellow veteran castoff D.J. Hackett, who is also working out on Tuesday. The Bucs are seeking an upgrade at third receiver, or at least competition for seventh-round slot receiver Sammie Stroughter.

Free agent Drew Bennett says he'd have no problem being a backup role player for the Titans after visiting Tennessee on Monday.

The Falcons and Browns have also shown interest, but Bennett is probably only getting minimum offers. He'd likely be no more than a fourth receiver for the Titans behind Justin Gage, Nate Washington, and rookie Kenny Britt.

Free agent WR Drew Bennett will visit with the Titans on Monday.

Bennett has a history with Tennessee, and the Titans could use an experienced fourth receiver to battle Lavelle Hawkins for playing time.

The Falcons hosted free agent Drew Bennett for a tryout on Thursday.

Interest in Bennett is picking up after he seemingly went unnoticed during pre-draft free agency. The 31-year-old is trying to prove he's recovered from foot surgery. Bennett wouldn't be a candidate to start for the Falcons.

The Browns will host Drew Bennett for a free agent visit on Wednesday.

Cleveland wants veteran competition for incoming rookies Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi. It's unclear how far along Bennett is in his rehab from foot surgery, but he's generated no interest elsewhere to this point.

Rams released WR Drew Bennett and QB Trent Green.

There was a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch early this month that the cap hit to cut Bennett made him impossible to part with, but the paper now admits that $50,000 is saved. That's not much, but Bennett wasn't worth his $3.3 million salary. The Titans will likely look hard at him. The 30-year-old is recovering from a broken foot, but had his best years under coordinator Mike Heimerdinger and Tennessee is obviously starved at wideout.

The cap hit St. Louis would take to release Drew Bennett makes him "next to impossible" to part with, according to beat writer Jim Thomas.

The Rams should at least explore a pay cut, and Bennett may be willing after contributing only 34 catches for 379 yards over the past two years. St. Louis has paid Bennett a whopping $12M during that span. He's due $3.3M in '09.

Drew Bennett will likely be back with the Rams in 2009, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Post-Dispatch cites "cap concerns" as why Bennett will be kept, but cutting him wouldn't cause a major hit. It would be nice if Bennett agreed to redo his contract after being a complete bust as a free agent signing before the '07 season. He only caught one pass for four yards in 2008.

Rams will place Drew Bennett on injured reserve, ending season.

Remember him? Bennett got hurt before 1:30 ET in Week 1 this season. The former Titan has caught only 37 passes since signing a $30 million contract in 2007. Of course he won't get that whole $30 million. With Donnie Avery having emerged, the Rams are likely to release Bennett this offseason.

In addition to RB Steven Jackson, the Rams declared WR Drew Bennett, QB Brock Berlin, CB Tye Hill, DB Todd Johnson, G Roy Schueing, T John Greco and NT Adam Carriker inactive for Week 8 against the Patriots.

Bennett isn't expected back for several more weeks. Donnie Avery will continue starting opposite Torry Holt and makes for a nice WR3 play.
