Jake Delhomme said Monday he's very likely to retire.
Delhomme was out of the league this season until the Texans lost both Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart to injury. He ended up making just one appearance, mopping up in Week 17 for T.J. Yates. Delhomme turned 37 last week and may have a future in coaching. Mon, Jan 16, 2012 12:13:00 PM

Relieving T.J. Yates in the first quarter, Jake Delhomme closed out the Texans' Week 17 loss by completing 18-of-28 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown against the Titans.

Delhomme played all but one possession. He was mostly sharp, relying on check downs and high-percentage plays while hitting Bryant Johnson for one deep shot, good for a 40-yard gain. If T.J. Yates' left shoulder is indeed separated, Delhomme may have to start in the Wild Card round. The Texans' offense would remain run heavy, theoretically minimizing the quarterback's impact on games. Early-game deficits can change that of course, but based on Week 17, at least, Delhomme doesn't appear to be a significant downgrade from Yates.

Jake Delhomme participated in Texans practice Wednesday.

Delhomme was able to report and get in a full session one day after being signed. According to coach Gary Kubiak, Delhomme "came a long way just from the first play of practice to the last play." Delhomme won't be under center against the Falcons, but anything beyond this week will depend on how T.J. Yates performs.

Texans agreed to terms with QB Jake Delhomme.

Coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Monday that he wanted a veteran QB who has "been in a few rodeos" as a fall-back plan to rookie T.J. Yates and newly signed Kellen Clemens. The 36-year-old Delhomme, who had been working on his own horse farm in Louisiana, was chosen over Jeff Garcia after Tuesday's workout. Coming off a 2:7 TD-to-INT ratio and 5.9 YPA with the Browns in 2010, Delhomme isn't an immediate threat to Yates. The Texans could turn to him as a steadier hand by late December, however, in preparation for the playoffs. Clemens is the No. 3 QB.

Free agent QB Jake Delhomme reportedly has no interest in playing for the Dolphins.

The Fins approached Delhomme, but the marriage never made sense from the beginning. Like Kerry Collins, Delhomme is finished as anything more than a mentor to a younger quarterback. Who can blame him for passing up an opportunity to play for an 0-4 club with a questionable front office?

Browns informed QB Jake Delhomme of his impending release.

Delhomme never had a prayer of seeing his $5.4 million salary after receiving a combined $20 million from the Browns and Panthers last season. Coaches around the league consider him an ideal mentor, so the 36-year-old will receive more interest than expected. Reuniting with John Fox in Denver and returning to Carolina are the two most likely scenarios.

The Charlotte Observer calls the return of ex-Panthers Jake Delhomme or Kerry Collins to Charlotte a "longshot."

The Panthers are looking for a veteran quarterback to bridge the gap to Cam Newton. However, starting Delhomme would bring them closer to Stanford QB Andrew Luck than any bridge to the future. At age 36, Delhomme is done. Collins, meanwhile, has stated his interest in returning to the Titans as a bridge to Jake Locker.

Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer believes there will be a "groundswell" in the Panthers' locker room once the Browns release Jake Delhomme and he becomes a free agent.

Friday night, Panthers franchise player Ryan Kalil started a mini Twitter campaign to re-sign Delhomme after reading a Profootballtalk.com story about the 36-year-old's impending release. Kalil even posted a quote from Ron Rivera in which Carolina's new coach said, "We’ve got to talk about where we want to head as far as the veteran backup is concerned." The Panthers could sign Delhomme as a Cam Newton mentor, but there's no way they could put him on the field. His ideal role would be on the coaching staff.

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer confirms that Jake Delhomme's days with the Browns "are numbered."

"I think he knows it, the team knows it," says Grossi. Delhomme is due a $5.4 million base salary for 2011, and he's sure to be released after the lockout. Grossi predicts that the Browns' third quarterback will "come from the undrafted ranks" or "maybe a very low-profile veteran free agent." Grossi believes Delhomme's career "is done as a legitimate starting competitor."

The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram confirms that Jake Delhomme will "likely" have to take a paycut to stay with the Browns this season.

"Whenever the thing opens up, we'll sit down with Jake and talk to him and decide what's the best for him and for our organization," GM Tom Heckert said. Delhomme won't be paid $5.4 million to function as the third QB. It's a good bet that he'll end up in a mentor role elsewhere, perhaps in Denver.

The Denver Post floats the idea of the Broncos signing Jake Delhomme in the event of a Kyle Orton trade.

Assuming the Browns trim Delhomme and his $5.4 million salary, of course. Coach John Fox wept when Delhomme was released by the Panthers, and the respect is mutual. The fit makes plenty of sense with Delhomme stepping into a mentoring role for Tim Tebow, pushing Brady Quinn back into the third quarterback spot -- where he belongs.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer's Tony Grossi believes Jake Delhomme would likely have to play for the NFL minimum if he wanted to remain with the Browns in 2011.

Delhomme was paid $7 million by Cleveland last year (on top of the $12.3 million he took home from the Panthers) to post a 63.4 QB rating in parts of five games. He threw just two touchdowns compared to seven interceptions. Since the end of the 2008 season, he has thrown for 10 scores while being picked off 25 times.

Browns GM Tom Heckert is refuting a National Football Post report that Jake Delhomme informed the team he has no intention of being a backup in 2011.

We had a tough time buying the original report, so this is no surprise. Delhomme is due $5.4 million in base salary, and he's clearly no longer starter caliber. The Browns hold every last bit of the leverage here.

According to the National Football Post's Dan Pompei, Jake Delhomme could be the Browns starter in 2011.

Delhomme has told the Browns he has no intention of being a backup, and apparently could end up starting if the lockout drags on long enough and the team decides second-year QB Colt McCoy hasn't had enough time to acquit himself with Pat Shurmur's system. The way he has played the past two seasons, it's hard to envision anybody making Delhomme a starter, especially at his current salary, but stranger things have happened.

Club president Mike Holmgren said Monday that it's "absolutely" possible Jake Delhomme could be back with the Browns in 2011.

GM Tom Heckert said earlier in the month that Delhomme would be asked to take a pay cut. The Browns would be better off cutting ties with the grossly overpaid 36-year-old and adding a young quarterback to develop behind Colt McCoy via the draft. They'll be just fine with Seneca Wallace in the No. 2 role.
