Rich Gannon officially announced his retirement.

A veteran of 18 seasons, Gannon spent bounced around the league for eleven years before hooking up with Jon Gruden for a magical run in Oakland. The 2002 NFL MVP will work in the broadcast booth this season for CBS.

Gannon wants to meet face to face with Al Davis before deciding anything official. At that point, it's expected the Raiders will release him, allowing Gannon to retire.

Appearing on NFL Network, Rich Gannon admitted that a retirement announcement would be coming in a few weeks.

The 2003 league MVP said returning to the NFL after a serious neck injury ''didn't make sense.'' This is no surpise. Gannon finishes his 16-year career with 28,743 career passing yards. His career TD/INT ratio was 180:104.

Rich Gannon restructured his contract, reducing it to the NFL minimum.

Gannon is likely to retire, but this keeps his options open for the near future. It will save Oakland $7.35 million against the salary cap.

Rich Gannon has reportedly ''come to accept the truth,'' that his playing days are over.

The Raiders can postpone his cap hit until next year and will give him all the time he needs to officially retire. Oakland should enter camp with Kerry Collins and Marques Tuiasossopo as their top two QBs.

Gannon has not stated whether he'll return next season, but he wants to give himself a shot.

Raiders placed Rich Gannon on injured reserve with a neck injury.

Saints defensive end Tony Bryant suffered a similar injury to Gannon and returned to the field. But it took Bryant nearly two years to recover and we can't see Gannon making that kind of committment at his age. His career, which finally flourished in Oakland, is likely over.

Gannon, wearing a neck brace, broke the news to Oakland reporters today. He said he wasn't able to comment on his future with the team or his possible retirement at this time. Many feel that Gannon's career is likely over.

Gannon will meet with a few more doctors this week to determine if he can play this season. Jerry Rice, for one, believes Gannon is done for the season.
