The 49ers have no immediate plans to sign free agent LB Lance Briggs.
The 49ers are Briggs' only free-agent visit to this point. With Navorro Bowman (knee) healthy, San Francisco will move forward with Bowman and Michael Wilhoite as their starting inside linebackers. Nick Moody, Desmond Bishop, and Nick Bellore are competing for backup roles. May 16 - 7:37 PM

A source told CSN Bay Area the 49ers have interest in free agent LB Lance Briggs.

Following Chris Borland and Pat Willis' retirements, the 49ers are left with Navorro Bowman (knee) and Michael Wilhoite (JAG) as their starting inside linebackers. Briggs would add veteran leadership to a Niners locker room that may need it, particularly if Justin Smith also calls it quits. Briggs was a weak-side linebacker in Chicago. He'd play inside in San Francisco's 3-4 defense.

Free agent LB Lance Briggs will visit the 49ers on Monday.

The 49ers are looking to upgrade their linebacker depth after losing Patrick Willis and Chris Borland to retirement. 34-year-old Briggs has struggled with injuries and effectiveness the last two seasons, but could benefit from moving inside in San Francisco. The Bucs and Cowboys also have interest in Briggs.

The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers have "had discussions" about free agent LB Lance Briggs.

The 49ers badly need to replenish their linebacker depth following the shock retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland, and Briggs has said he's willing to play inside. Briggs remained an able run stopper last season, but was limited to 461 snaps by injury.

CSN Chicago reports the Bears will not re-sign free agent LB Lance Briggs.

Briggs has spent his entire 12-year career with the Bears. Briggs was willing to kick inside in new DC Vic Fangio's 3-4 scheme, but will instead head to the open market after playing 461 effective snaps last season. Briggs ended the year on injured reserve with a groin issue, but was still an able run stopper before going down. 2015 will be his age-35 season.
Mar 5 - 3:47 PM

Free agent LB Lance Briggs is now open to returning to Chicago.

Briggs was done with Phil Emery and Marc Trestman, but sees a chance with the new Ryan Pace/John Fox regime. He's willing to play inside in Vic Fangio's expected 3-4 scheme, a good fit for a player going into his age-35 season. Despite his advanced age, Briggs proved he can still stuff the run last season.
Jan 29 - 9:42 AM

Bears placed WLB Lance Briggs (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Briggs was hoping to make a late-season return, but will be shut down with only five games remaining. He's struggled to stay healthy the last two years and isn't expected to be re-signed. 34-year-old Briggs graded out as a top-five outside linebacker against the run and should draw free-agent interest. Rookie Christian Jones will take over for Briggs on the weak side.

Bears WLB Lance Briggs (groin) is expected to miss "a few weeks."

Briggs got hurt in a collision with Mike Evans last Sunday. Rookie Christian Jones is expected to take over on the weak-side. It's a big loss to an already-bad Chicago run defense, as Briggs has graded out as a top-four 4-3 outside linebacker against the run at Pro Football Focus. Briggs, 34, is in the final year of his contract. It's fair to wonder if he's played his final snap as a Bear.

Bears WLB Lance Briggs exited Week 12 against the Bucs with a groin injury.

Briggs hurt himself in a collision with Mike Evans in the second quarter. He slowly walked to the locker room before halftime. Briggs has been ruled out for the rest of the game. Rookie Christian Jones will replace Briggs in the lineup.

Bears WLB Lance Briggs admitted this is "probably my last year as a Chicago Bear."

Briggs, in his 12th year as Bear at 33 years old, is in the final year of his contract. The seven-time Pro Bowler is not expecting to get an offer from the team prior to free agency. He said he doesn't know if he'll even play in the NFL in 2015. Briggs, who has missed the last three games due to a rib injury, is expected back for Sunday night's game against the Packers.

Bears declared WLB Lance Briggs, LB Jon Bostic, RT Jordan Mills, S Danny McCray, S Ahmad Dixon, OG Charles Leno and CB Terrance Mitchell inactive for Week 8 against the Patriots.

With Mills inactive, Michael Ola will start opposite Jermon Bushrod. Briggs is week to week with a ribs injury.

Bears WLB Lance Briggs (ribs) is listed as doubtful for Week 8.

Chicago had all kinds of problems in coverage of Charles Clay at the second level last week, primarily due to injuries at linebacker. They will turn to UDFA Christian Jones instead of struggling Khaseem Greene on the weak side this week.

Bears declared WLB Lance Briggs, FS Chris Conte, DB Terrance Mitchell, S Ahmad Dixon, LB Jon Bostic, OL Charles Leno, and DE Trevor Scott inactive for Week 7 against the Dolphins.

Khaseem Greene will start on the weak side in place of Briggs. Brock Vereen will make the start at free safety. The Bears are relatively healthy.

Bears WLB Lance Briggs (ribs) has been ruled out for Week 7.

The Bears have played surprisingly stout run defense despite Briggs' absence. They'll continue to mix and match on the weak side against the Dolphins.
Fri, Oct 17, 2014 02:09:00 PM

Bears WLB Lance Briggs (ribs) has been ruled out for Week 6.

It's an upgrade to Steven Jackson and the Falcons' rushing attack. Look for the Bears to use either Khaseem Greene or UDFA Christian Jones at weak-side 'backer.
