New Falcons DC Marquand Manuel will call the plays in 2017.
Coach Dan Quinn took over playcalling duties from since-fired DC Richard Smith late last season, a move which foreshadowed the split. Quinn will again take a step back with Manuel at coordinator, but he will still play a large role in game planning. Manuel has worked with Quinn four of his five years as an NFL coach. Falcons promoted DBs coach Marquand Manuel to defensive coordinator.

Manuel and LBs coach Jeff Ulbrich were the top in-house contenders after DC Richard Smith's firing. Just 37 years old, Manuel played eight seasons in the league before jumping right into coaching. He's made a quick rise, helping develop the Legion of Boom in Seattle before following Dan Quinn to Atlanta in 2015. The 2016 Falcons played a ton of man coverage down the stretch, but they may use more Cover 3 moving forward with Manuel at the controls.

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure reports Atlanta is "strongly considering" promoting DBs coach Marquand Manuel to defensive coordinator.

Manuel, 37, is a rising star in the coaching ranks. He interviewed for the Jaguars' defensive-coordinator vacancy last offseason before ultimately choosing to remain in Atlanta. The Falcons fired DC Richard Smith late Tuesday night, and the plan is to stay in house for his successor. Manuel did a tremendous job developing CBs Jalen Collins and Brian Poole and SS Keanu Neal.

Marquand Manuel will stay on as the Falcons DBs coach next season.

Manuel was interviewed for the Jaguars' defensive coordinator position and was ultimately offered a passing-game coordinator job with the team, but he decided to stay in Atlanta. Having coached up Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford, Manuel should be on the short list for coordinator jobs in the next cycle.

Falcons DBs coach Marquand Manuel will interview for the Jaguars defensive coordinator vacancy.

Jacksonville fired Bob Babich last week. Manuel played safety for eight seasons in the NFL before joining the coaching ranks in 2012. Manuel coached with Jags coach Gus Bradley for a year in Seattle and has been in the same defensive system his entire coaching career. With Bradley expected to take on a bigger role on defense next season, he can afford to hire a less experienced coordinator like Manuel.

Falcons hired Marquand Manuel as DBs coach and senior defensive consultant.

Manuel, 35, played eight seasons in the NFL, appearing in 116 games and starting 57. He coached alongside new Falcons coach Dan Quinn in Seattle the past three seasons and now follows to him Atlanta with a promotion. Manuel has a couple building blocks in CB Desmond Trufant and SS William Moore.

Lions released S Marquand Manuel.

The slow-footed Manuel was dumped for rookie Randy Phillips. C.C. Brown, who was completely exposed as a starter last season with the Giants, now appears the favorite to start at strong safety unless Jonathan Hefney beats him out.

Lions S Marquand Manuel is on the roster bubble this summer.

Most of the Lions' safeties are on the bubble. Manuel lacks speed and is a major liability in coverage. The signing of C.C. Brown showed Detroit's lack of confidence in their options at strong safety, and the team is said to be interested in Chiefs unsigned RFA Jarrad Page.

Marquand Manuel ran as the Lions' first-team strong safety at the team's first post-draft minicamp.

Marvin White was No. 2 on the depth chart, and Daniel Bullocks ran with the third team. The trio must have failed to impress because C.C. Brown was signed right after the minicamp. All four safeties are on the roster bubble.

Lions agreed to terms with SS Marquand Manuel on a one-year, $805,000 contract.

Manuel, 31, recorded no interceptions and just 35 tackles in nine starts last year before landing on injured reserve with a shoulder issue. The Lions would be far better off if he's not in the first-team lineup this season.

Lions placed S Marquand Manuel (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Manuel went down during Sunday's loss along with a host of other Lions. The team signed S Deangelo Smith off the Bears practice squad to take Manuel's place, but it's another blow to the lowly Lions. Manuel, 30, was fifth on the team with 36 tackles and had played in all nine games. He's a free agent after the season.

Marquand Manuel left Sunday's game in the second quarter with a leg injury.

Manuel initially was helped off the field with a leg injury in the first quarter, but later returned only to hurt his other leg. Kalvin Pearson is the backup.

Marquand Manuel has overtaken Kalvin Pearson to be the Lions' starting strong safety.

Manuel started Week 1 and racked up seven solo tackles. He's not a good player, but is worth a look in deep IDP leagues because of his situation.

Lions S Marquand Manuel was running with the second unit during minicamp.

Manuel was signed as a free agent in June and at least partialy allowed Detroit to give up Gerald Alexander in the Dennis Northcutt trade. Manuel will need to beat out Daniel Bullocks among other to get a roster spot.

Lions signed S Marquand Manuel, formerly of the Broncos.

The Detroit Free Press has the player listed as "cornerback Manuel Marquand," but it's actually Marquand Manuel and he plays safety. No wonder the newspaper business is dying. A coverage-challenged starter in Denver last season, the 30-year-old will compete with Daniel Bullocks in Detroit.
