The Saints' recent linebacker shopping for Zach Thomas and Dan Morgan could mean they are ready to release Brian Simmons.

Simmons, whose base salary is $3.3 million, has failed to live up to expectations after losing out to Mark Simoneau as starting middle linebacker. The free agent Simoneau is unlikely to be re-signed, but the Dolphins are said to be interested in his services.

Brian Simmons will play middle linebacker in New Orleans.

The Saints informed the veteran he'll be battling Mark Simoneau at the MIKE spot even though Simmons' natural position is the weak side. Simmons is likely the favorite to win the job but is currently limited by his knee rehab.

Saints signed LB Brian Simmons to a three-year contract.

New Orleans got away with signing journeymen linebackers last year, and now has added a proven vet to the mix. Simmons, 31, is a natural weak-side linebacker but could push Mark Simoneau in the middle if he's recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery in time for training camp.

Bengals released LB Brian Simmons.

It comes as a surprise considering Cincy's thin LB group, but the warning signs were there. Simmons was due to make $3.3 million, couldn't stay healthy all season, and is recovering from knee surgery. He also wasn't a Marvin Lewis draft pick. The nine-year veteran should be able to get a job elsewhere.

Bengals LB Brian Simmons recently underwent knee surgery.

Guard Bobbie Williams had procedures done on his shoulder and ankle. Sam Adams had his knee cleaned out and free agent Eric Steinbach had hand surgery. Simmons' status for offseason activities is uncertain.

The middle linebacker position is expected to be one of the Bengals' top areas of concern this offseason.

Brian Simmons is a natural weak-side player and Ahmad Brooks is still raw, but apparently will get a shot for more playing time if his offseason goes well. It's uncertain whether Simmons will be a starter in 2007.

Bengals LB Brian Simmons has moved back into the starting lineup.

He started at middle linebacker on Monday night and racked up 11 tackles. Simmons originally lost his starting job due to injuries and a temporarily effective Ahmad Brooks. Brooks is now inactive every week.

Bengals linebacker Brian Simmons (shoulder/neck stinger) is expected to play Thursday night but sounds unlikely to start.

Caleb Miller is currently one tackle off Landon Johnson's team lead. Simmons may have a chance to regain his starting job in the middle when he's 100 percent. Rashad Jeanty is still playing the strong side.

Bengals LB Brian Simmons (questionable, neck) practiced fully Friday.

It was Simmons' first practice in over two weeks. Caleb Miller appears to have passed supplemental rookie Ahmad Brooks at middle linebacker, and Simmons could make a run at Miller's starting job.
