Falcons agreed to terms with TE Reggie Kelly, formerly of the Bengals.
It's homecoming for the 34-year-old who started his career as a Falcons second-round pick in 1999. Kelly is purely a blocking specialist. His addition is an ominous sign for Justin Peelle, who went down with a knee injury in the preseason opener. Tue, Aug 16, 2011 02:18:00 PM

Former Bengals TE Reggie Kelly has decided to retire from football.

Kelly visited the Steelers on Tuesday, but decided he'd rather hang 'em up than accept a contract for the veteran's minimum. A second-round pick by the Falcons in 1999, Kelly developed into one of football's most dominant run-blocking tight ends across seven seasons with Cincinnati. The Bengals ought to give Kelly some consideration for their Ring of Honor.

Free agent TE Reggie Kelly is visiting with the Steelers Tuesday.

Kelly, 34, is a respected locker room presence but has nothing left in the tank. He tore his Achilles in 2009 and is unlikely to be much more than a mentor at this point in his career.

Free agent TE Reggie Kelly is not expected back with the Bengals.

Kelly, 34, offers nothing in the pass game and was only a mediocre blocker after a torn Achilles' wiped out his 2009 season. The Bengals are going back to power football, so they'll likely target blocking tight ends in the draft.

Benglas TE Reggie Kelly says he's experienced no ill effects at OTAs from the torn Achilles' tendon that washed out his 2009 season.

"I feel excellent," said Kelly. "My technique is a lot better than I thought it would be right now. ... I’m able to push off with (the heel) with no problems." Kelly's presence limits our 2009 expectations for rookie Jermaine Gresham.

Bengals TE Reggie Kelly (Achilles), FS Chris Crocker (ankle), and K Dave Rayner (hip) returned to practice on Thursday.

Kelly was considered fully recovered when he re-signed in mid May, but coach Marvin Lewis wanted him up to speed on conditioning before practicing. Limited the past six weeks, Rayner will resume his competition with Mike Nugent for kicking duties.

Newly signed TE Reggie Kelly (Achilles) hopes to be able to run routes by the Bengals' June 15-17 minicamp.

Kelly said he will "take it slow and not rush things" in his return from last year's Achilles' injury. The 33-year-old's contract isn't guaranteed, so there will be pressure for him to prove that he's healthy by preseason action.

Bengals re-signed TE Reggie Kelly.

Kelly is coming off Achilles' surgery at 33 years old. He'll be a player/coach and mentor to young tight ends Jermaine Gresham and Chase Coffman. Kelly has never caught more than 31 balls in a season.

Free agent TE Reggie Kelly says he has a done deal to return to the Bengals.

Terms of the deal are not yet known. At age 33, he'll be a mentor for rookie Jermaine Gresham and second-year man Chase Coffman.

Coach Marvin Lewis indicated that the Bengals are still hopeful of re-signing free agent TE Reggie Kelly.

The 33-year-old, coming off Achilles' surgery, is expected to take on a mentor role to first-rounder Jermaine Gresham. It's a situation to monitor, as Kelly could take snaps away from the rookie on running downs.

The Bengals are expected to consider re-signing TE Reggie Kelly as a "mentor" to Jermaine Gresham.

The Bengals envision Gresham as their future Kelly and Chase Coffman as their future Ben Utecht. Let's hope they can do a lot better than that. The Bengals concede that they will have to work Gresham in slowly this summer since he hasn't played in a year and a half. He won't be a fantasy pick.

Free agent TE Reggie Kelly (Achilles' surgery) worked out at the Bengals' training facility on Wednesday.

Kelly hopes that the team will show renewed interest in him after proving his improved health. The 33-year-old blocking tight end admits he's considered retirement, but hopes to at least play one more season in Cincinnati.

The Bengals would still like to re-sign free agent TE Reggie Kelly, according to beat writer Joe Reedy.

Kelly is 33 and coming off a ruptured Achilles tendon, so this shows you just how desperate the Bengals are for tight end help. Kelly would ideally be a mentor to Chase Coffman and a rookie they draft.

Bengals TE Reggie Kelly underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles' tendon Tuesday and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

At least Cincy can get Kelly back for cheap next offseason, assuming he's healthy and still wanted. The 32-year-old is slated for 2010 free agency. Kelly was more valuable to the Bengals than he would've been to most teams.

Bengals TE Reggie Kelly is expected to miss all of 2009 after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in training camp Sunday.

Kelly already practiced in camp, so the Bengals can't place him on the PUP list. He'll have surgery Wednesday and go on injured reserve. Kelly's numbers never reflect it, but he's a difference maker in the passing game as a blocker. The Bengals need Daniel Coats to step up big time because Ben Utecht and rookie Chase Coffman are almost strictly receiving tight ends.
