Lions released WR Dennis Northcutt.
Derrick Williams will be Detroit's primary punt returner, at least until he blows it. Northcutt's $1.3 million guaranteed kept him safe on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to get him through Sunday. A poor offensive option, Northcutt won't come close to making that much money on the open market. Sun, Sep 5, 2010 03:17:00 PM

Beat writer Tom Kowalski expects the Lions to keep Dennis Northcutt because he's their only experienced punt returner, and his $1.55 million salary is mostly guaranteed.

The Lions' kick return situation is still wide open. They don't want to give up on 2009 third-rounder Derrick Williams just yet, but he's inspired no confidence as a returner. Rookie Tim Toone is expected to end up on the practice squad, and Aaron Brown is battling Maurice Morris and DeDe Dorsey for a roster spot.

Dennis Northcutt is "very much" on the roster bubble, according to the Detroit News.

His destiny hinges on the development of the Lions' young receivers and return options. If neither Derrick Williams nor Tim Toone steps forward as a reliable punt returner, Northcutt has a good chance to stick as the No. 4 receiver.

Lions' WR/PR Dennis Northcutt has "pretty much been a forgotten man" during the Lions' offseason, reports Tom Kowalski of MLive.com.

Northcutt is fighting Tim Toone, Derrick Williams, and free agent Brian Clark for one of two final two receiver spots, but fortunately for Northcutt, none of those players have stepped up to take the job.

The Lions will reportedly target a No. 2 receiver in the middle rounds of this year's draft.

Per beat writer Tom Kowalski, the team is looking for a "burner" to erase triple coverage from Calvin Johnson. Kowalski "wouldn't be surprised" to see either Bryant Johnson or Dennis Nortcutt jettisoned this offseason.

Dennis Northcutt caught six passes for 48 yards in Sunday's loss to the Vikings.

Northcutt was just a dump off for Matthew Stafford and racked up catches, but he's still waiver wire fodder. He had no catches in each of his previous two games.

Dennis Northcutt caught five balls for 40 yards in Week 6.

Northcutt drew the start with Calvin Johnson (knee, thigh) inactive and led Detroit in receiving, but the team's passing game was completely ineffective. Johnson figures to return after the Lions' Week 7 bye, rendering Northcutt irrelevant in fantasy leagues. He will continue to return punts.

Dennis Northcutt caught five passes for 70 yards and one touchdown in Week 5 against the Steelers.

Northcutt caught four of his five passes in the second half, taking advantage of Calvin Johnson's injury to become Daunte Culpepper's go-to target. He had just 42 yards coming into the game.

Lions slot receiver Dennis Northcutt (thumb) practiced fully for the second straight day Tuesday.

Northcutt is optimistic he'll be ready for Week 1, but he's missed the majority of camp. He said he still has a little pain in his thumb and likely won't play in Thursday's preseason finale. Any Lions receiver not named Calvin is not draftable.

New Lions slot receiver Dennis Northcutt is unlikely to face NFL discipline stemming from an incident at a nightclub last May.

He was accused of arranging for someone to hit his pregnant girlfriend in the face, but was never charged and avoided legal trial. "Civil cases generally are not reviewed under the conduct policy," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

Lions WR Dennis Northcutt could be suspended for at least one game this season because of a prior incident involving his ex-girlfriend.

Sharri Henry alleged that Northcutt arranged for his cousin to "hit her in the face and disfigure her" at a Hollywood nightclub last May. She was four months pregnant at the time. Northcutt claims she is simply extorting him. Part of the lawsuit was thrown out, but NFL spokesman Greg Ailleo said "We're looking into it."

After passing his physical Tuesday, Dennis Northcutt confirmed that the Lions acquired him to play in the slot between Calvin and Bryant Johnson.

"That’s one of the biggest reasons they brought me in," Northcutt said. "That has been my biggest strength through my nine years of playing in the NFL." The bad news is OC Scott Linehan's last experiment with a slot receiver (Drew Bennett) busted. Northcutt will struggle to match his 2008 numbers.

Lions acquired WR Dennis Northcutt from the Jaguars in exchange for S Gerald Alexander.

The Jags get a young safety who can tackle and cover, and may grow into a starter, while Detroit gets an overpaid 31-year-old slot guy/punt returner with a history of drops and zero return TDs since '05. Northcutt will likely block third-round pick Derrick Williams this year, and may very well cost Ronald Curry his roster spot. The Lions will say they're adding an experienced receiver and return help, but it's hard to like the deal for GM Martin Mayhew.

Jaguars agreed to trade WR Dennis Northcutt to the Lions in exchange for S Gerald Alexander. The deal is contingent on both players passing physicals and will not be official until Monday.

While the trade shows the Jags' high regard for their three late-round receivers, it also may signal a lack of faith in Lions third-round pick Derrick Williams, who recently came down with a hamstring injury. Northcutt is a candidate to return punts for the Lions and will likely battle Williams and Ronald Curry for slot receiver duties. Jags GM Gene Smith did well to get a young safety for Northcutt, who is grossly overpaid and turning 32. It's a shock that anybody wanted him for more than the minimum salary, but these are the Lions.

The Florida Times Union confirms that the Jaguars plan to release Dennis Northcutt if they can't find a trade partner.

This all but assures him of being cut. No team will want his contract. Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard are the favorites to replace Northcutt in the slot, although Jags.com writer Vic Ketchman calls Tiquan Underwood a sleeper.
