Former Browns QB Kelly Holcomb has officially retired from the NFL.
The journeyman may be best remembered for the frenzied 2003 Wild Card game where he shredded the Steelers secondary for 429 yards, only to have Tommy Maddox rally Pittsburgh late to overcome a 17-point deficit for the 36-33 win. Holcomb started only 24 games in his seven NFL years, and his career YPA (6.6), TD to INT ratio (39:38), and lack of ideal arm strength explain why. Wed, Dec 24, 2008 09:13:00 AM

Former Vikings, Browns, and Bills QB Kelly Holcomb has decided to retire.

Holcomb, 35, has latched on as his alma mater Middle Tennessee State's in-game sideline reporter. He played seven seasons in the NFL and finished his career with a 39:38 TD to INT ratio. Though clearly inferior physically, Holcomb may best be remembered for often outplaying former No. 1 overall pick Tim Couch in practice and games with the Browns.

Free agent Kelly Holcomb, who was released by the Vikings on Wednesday, says he's contemplating retirement.

"I got to be realistic with myself," said Holcomb, 34. "I'm getting older, and it seems every time I get on the field these last couple of years, something happens." Holcomb suffered a nasty neck injury last October.

Vikings released QB Kelly Holcomb.

Holcomb was due a $150,000 bonus the club wasn't going to pay. He played poorly in three 2007 appearances, barely completing half his 83 attempts and averaging only 6.7 YPA before hurting his neck. At 35, he may retire.

Kelly Holcomb (neck, questionable) made "marked improvement" in practice Friday, according to Vikings head coach Brad Childress.

If the Vikings are comfortable with Holcomb and/or Tarvaris Jackson backing up Brooks Bollinger, recently signed Koy Detmer could be cut. Another scenario might be Holcomb going on IR, though that seems unlikely now.

Kelly Holcomb (neck) was limited in practice Thursday.

Holcomb is not expected to play Sunday against the Pack.

Holcomb will be the Vikings' active backup at best in Week 10.

Kelly Holcomb (neck) is not expected to play in Week 10.

Brooks Bollinger is the Vikings' likely starter this weekend.

An MRI showed no structural damage to Kelly Holcomb's injured neck, but revealed a bruised vertebrae.

Vikings coach Brad Childress says Holcomb is "extremely sore," and the veteran still isn't expected to play in Week 9. Childress is hoping that Tarvaris Jackson (finger) will be healthy enough to start versus San Diego.

Kelly Holcomb (neck) will undergo an MRI on Monday. He is not expected to play in Week 9.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune describes Holcomb's injury as being similar to whiplash. He needed help getting his shoulder pads off and had his neck placed in a brace. "I kind of went numb for five, six seconds," Holcomb said. "They took X-rays on it. I have no broken bones, but it's pretty sore."

Kelly Holcomb left Sunday's game in the third quarter with a neck injury and did not return.

Holcomb's head was slammed into the turf on a sack and he was in obvious pain on the bench, with Brooks Bollinger coming in to replace him. Holcomb looked awful before leaving, completing 7-of-16 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown while starting for the injured Tarvaris Jackson. Healthy or not, the odds of Holcomb continuing as the Vikings' starter seem slim.

As expected, ESPN.com reports that Kelly Holcomb will start for the Vikings in Week 8 against the Eagles.

Playing because of Tarvaris Jackson's injured finger, Holcomb will face the team that dealt him to the Vikings just before the season began. Minnesota is now openly talking about looking at quarterbacks in the draft, so Jackson is no sure thing to immediately reclaim the job when healthy. Needless to say that Holcomb is a very poor fantasy play.

Kelly Holcomb took the bulk of first-team reps at practice Thursday.

He's expected to start over Tarvaris Jackson in Week 8 against the Eagles, who traded Holcomb to the Vikings in late August. He's a horrible fantasy play.

Kelly Holcomb is expected to be the Vikings' starting quarterback Sunday against the Eagles.

Expect a lot of short passes from the Vikes with Holcomb behind center. He completed just over 50 percent of his attempts, throwing for one score and one interception in Week 3 and Week 4 starts in place of Tarvaris Jackson.
Wed, Oct 24, 2007 04:56:00 PM

Kelly Holcomb completed 21-of-39 passes for 258 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 4 against the Packers.

The yardage total looks nice, but Holcomb was awful. He looks completely flustered when faced with any kind of pressure, misfires on the rare occasions when a Vikings receiver breaks open deep, and threw no fewer than three passes that should have been picked off, including one that was to end the Vikings' late comeback attempt. As soon as Tarvaris Jackson is healthy, he'll no doubt reclaim the starting gig.
