49ers re-signed K Phil Dawson to a one-year, $3.14 million contract.
Even at 40, Dawson remained a solid kicker last season, knocking through 24-of-27 attempts and connecting on all but one extra point. He should continue that success into his age-41 season, but his fantasy upside will continue to be limited by the lack of talent on offense in San Francisco. The one-year deal suggests Dawson may be considering retirement after this season. Mar 11 - 10:11 PM

49ers re-signed K Phil Dawson to a two-year contract.

Annually among the NFL's most underrated kickers in Cleveland, Dawson trekked to San Francisco in 2013 and nailed 39-of-43 field goals. Although he recently turned 39, Dawson remains a key component of the 49ers' offense.

Free agent K Phil Dawson is not a candidate for the 49ers' franchise tag.

Because Dawson was tagged by the Browns in 2011 and 2012, he'd be entitled to the quarterback franchise number of about $16 million if he's tagged a third time. That's not going to happen. Dawson has expressed a strong desire to re-sign with the 49ers. He made 39-of-43 field goals last season.

Impending free agent K Phil Dawson "absolutely" wants to re-sign with the 49ers.

Dawson expects the sides to begin talks "soon." One of the best kickers of the 21st century, Dawson turns 39 later this week, but was as good as ever in 2013. After spending the first 14 years of his career in Cleveland, Dawson converted 32-of-36 field-goal attempts for the 49ers, and went 7-of-7 in the postseason. He should be back in San Fran for 2014.

49ers K Phil Dawson has now made a franchise record 26 consecutive field goals.

A year after fighting through the David Akers disaster, the 49ers have found excellence at the position. Dawson is 29-of-32 on the season, including 10 makes from 40-49 yards and five from 50-plus. He was fantasy's No. 8 kicker this season.

49ers agreed to terms with K Phil Dawson, formerly of the Browns.

The 49ers are replacing David Akers with the best kicker on the market. Dawson has spent his entire 14-year career with the Browns, and was an original member of the "new" Browns in 1999. He's converted 84 percent of his 363 career field-goal attempts, and was 29-of-31 (93.5 percent) in 2012. The 49ers aren't going to have to worry about shanks this season.

Browns CEO Joe Banner says the team will not use the franchise tag.

This is not a surprise. Phil Dawson has been the team's "franchise" player for the past two seasons, but if the Browns slapped him with the tag for a third consecutive year, they would have had to pay the 38-year-old close to $15 million. Cleveland is expected to move on from many of their veteran free agents.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi says the Browns re-signing impending free agent K Phil Dawson is "not happening."

Dawson, 38, was the team's "franchise" player the last two seasons, but it sounds like the Browns want to get younger. Dawson went on to make 29-of-31 field goals and all 29 extra points in 2012, making his first Pro Bowl. He's drilled 14-of-15 field goals from 50-plus yards over the last two seasons, so he has some juice left in his leg.

Browns K Phil Dawson has matched his career-best streak with 27 consecutive converted field goals dating to last season.

Over the past two seasons Dawson is also a league-best 12-of-13 on field goals of 50+ yards. Just as impressively, the Browns rank No. 1 in kickoff coverage this season. While Dawson is worthy of Pro Bowl consideration, this could be his last year in Cleveland. New CEO Joe Banner can't use the franchise tag because CBA rules state that three years in a row brings the QB franchise number -- expected to be over $15 million -- into play.

Browns K Phil Dawson will play out the season under his one-year franchise tag tender of $3.81 million.

It's the second straight year that Dawson will kick on a franchise tender. The Browns would have to pay him a ludicrous $5.3 million to use the franchise tag again in 2013. Dawson has connected on at least 82 percent of his field goals in five straight years, but hasn't topped 29 attempts in any of the last three as the Browns' offense has gone in the tank.

According to ESPN Cleveland, the Browns are not expected to reach an extension with franchise player Phil Dawson before Monday's deadline.

Already overpaid for a kicker, Dawson will play out the season on a one-year, $3.81 million deal if the Browns are unwilling to meet his long-term demands. Dawson was franchised for a second time this offseason, so a third designation would bring his 2013 salary to $5.3 million.

Browns franchise player K Phil Dawson has expressed a desire to retire with Cleveland.

Although Dawson has tried unsuccessfully for a few years to land a long-term contract, GM Tom Heckert maintains that it remains the team's goal as well. Dawson believes he can break Hall of Famer Lou "The Toe" Groza's franchise record of 1,349 points within the next 2-3 years. Dawson is participating in mandatory minicamp this week.

Browns signed franchise player K Phil Dawson to a one-year, $3.81 million contract.

The move makes Dawson one of the Browns' highest-paid players. Dawson converted 24-of-29 field-goal attempts last season, but produced just 10 touchbacks despite the league's new kickoff rules. The Browns remain hopeful of working out a long-term deal with Dawson, who has been with the franchise since 1999.

Browns assigned the franchise tag to K Phil Dawson.

The normal kicker tag is $2.665 million, but Dawson costs $3.81M because he played last year as the Browns' franchise player. It's a lot to pay for a 37-year-old kicker. Dawson connected on 24-of-29 field goal tries in 2011, although he had two of them blocked and managed only 10 touchbacks. Assuming he keeps the tag, Dawson will easily be the NFL's most overpaid kicker in 2012.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer expects K Phil Dawson to leave in free agency.

Dawson was slapped with the franchise tag prior to this season and went 7-of-8 on field goals from 50-plus yards out. He's relocated his family to Texas and is likely seeking a long-term deal elsewhere. Dawson will be 37 later this month.
