Injured contract-year WR Drew Carter says he'd be interested in re-signing with Oakland after the season if James Lofton stays on the staff.
Lofton is the Raiders' receivers coach and could be in the mix for a promotion to offensive coordinator or even head coach as an Al Davis favorite. Carter is recovering from a torn ACL. He should be healthy by the spring. Mon, Dec 8, 2008 05:20:00 PM

Date:

Drew Carter's knee injury is a torn ACL. He will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

This won't end his career, but he'll probably have to take a deal for the minimum to catch on somewhere next year, when he's a free agent. Carter will be 28 when the 2009 season starts. Any loss of explosiveness would be crushing, as Carter doesn't have reliable hands and shies from contact.

Raiders WR Drew Carter will miss the season with a knee injury.

It's a blow to the former Panther, whose career was gaining new life in Oakland. He was pushing Ronald Curry to start and added depth to a bone-thin wideout corps. This ensures a first-string job for Curry and Javon Walker, who will both see targets in Oakland's run-first attack. Walker was close to getting benched and still could be for Chaz Schilens early in the year.

Drew Carter was helped off the field with a left knee injury during the first quarter of Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Battling with Ronald Curry, Carter was given the start tonight to see if he could help get the passing game jumpstarted. If the injury is serious, Curry and Javon Walker would have starting jobs locked up.

Drew Carter will start the Raiders' third exhibition game at flanker, ahead of Ronald Curry.

Curry will act as the third receiver. Both could end up starting if (or, more likely when) Javon Walker is benched, but Carter looks to have an edge at the "Z" for now. Curry could still lead the Raiders in catches if he's No. 3 because he's so effective in the slot. He caught 62 passes there in 2006.

Drew Carter did participate in Raiders practice Sunday.

Carter left Friday's preseason opener with a bum knee, but he's healthy. Ronald Curry was held out Sunday after missing the exhibition game due to a tight hamstring. Curry and Carter are competing to start.

Drew Carter left Friday night's game with a knee injury without recording any catches.

An annual training camp star, it would be nice to see Carter translate some of his ability into game performances. No word on whether this injury is serious, although Carter has been relatively healthy since missing his rookie season with a torn ACL.

Drew Carter and Ronald Curry are listed as co-starting receivers on Oakland's first depth chart of the season.

Javon Walker is listed opposite them, although the Sacramento Bee is surprised Walker doesn't have a slash next to his name considering his poor attitude and worse play. It's too early to get overly excited here, especially if Walker tries to quit again, but this is a sign Carter will have a big role in the offense.

Coach Lane Kiffin says that among all the Raiders' receivers, Drew Carter has developed the best chemistry with JaMarcus Russell.

Carter has put in significant time working with Russell as he attempts to lock down the No. 3 receiver job over Johnnie Lee Higgins and Arman Shields.

With Ronald Curry (foot) sidelined, Drew Carter and Javon Walker were the Raiders' first-team wideouts at May OTAs.

Carter is the favorite for third receiver duties over Johnnie Lee Higgins and Arman Shields. Hopefully we'll get some word on how Walker (knee) looked.

Drew Carter's one-year contract with Oakland is for $2 million.

It's more than double what he made last year, but still a rare decent investment for a Raiders club desperate for playmaking at wideout. Of course, it hardly makes up for the $55 million stunner they gave Javon Walker.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Raiders have agreed to terms with WR Drew Carter.

Carter, 26, caught 38 passes for 517 yards (13.6 YPC) and four TDs as the Panthers' third receiver in 2007. He has no trouble separating, but has struggled to do the "little things" well. Carter will get good tutelage from WRs coach James Lofton and be a strong bet to pick up some starts when Javon Walker's knee acts up again. He's currently Oakland's third receiver.

Free agent Drew Carter met with Titans officials on Thursday.

Justin McCareins, a similar player with more experience, is also in town. The Raiders hosted Carter last week, but chose to overpay Javon Walker instead.

Free agent Drew Carter will visit with the Raiders on Sunday.

He has a trip to Tampa scheduled after that. Carter has the type of speed Al Davis is always looking for, but has never been a full-time player before.

After officially signing Muhsin Muhammad on Wednesday, the Panthers are not expected to bring back Drew Carter or Keary Colbert.

Both are unrestricted free agents. Carter has blazing speed, but has never used his size (6'3/200) to an advantage. He still could work with a team like New Orleans, Dallas, or Tampa Bay as a cheap situational deep threat.
