Patriots signed WR Michael Jenkins, formerly of the Vikings.

Jenkins, 31 in June, caught 40 passes for 449 yards and two touchdowns last season, appearing in all 16 games. "Molasses Mike" was released by the Vikings more than three weeks ago, and didn't draw an ounce of known interest before signing with New England. The deal is likely for the veteran's minimum, and it isn't a guarantee that he'll make the team out of training camp. Jenkins can block, but he can no longer generate any separation from defensive backs.

Jenkins was due an $825,000 salary, but the Vikings made sure to cut him before his $2.425 million March roster bonus came due. Per beat writer Tom Pelissero, the Jenkins move clears $3.25 million in cap space. Turning 31 in June, "Molasses Mike" has been an ineffective pass catcher for quite some time. He could resurface elsewhere as a No. 4 wideout who plays on blocking downs.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities says it's a "safe assumption" Michael Jenkins will not be back with the Vikings.

Jenkins is due a $2.425 million roster bonus in March, and he won't find that money anywhere else on the open market. He's an easy cut. Beat writer Tom Pelissero says the Vikings' receiver corps is going to look "substantially different" in 2013. Jerome Simpson and Devin Aromashodu are free agents, and Pelissero doesn't expect them to have "much of a marketplace."

Jenkins played 69.2 percent of the snaps last season out of simple desperation. The Vikings are sure to overhaul their receiving corps this offseason after Molasses Mike and Jerome Simpson crippled their offense. Christian Ponder needs a receiver other than Percy Harvin that can actually get open against one-on-one coverage.

Michael Jenkins caught three passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' playoff loss to Green Bay.

Jenkins scored his 50-yard touchdown on a badly blown coverage during fourth-quarter garbage time, "narrowing" the scoring margin to 24-10 with under four minutes left. Molasses Mike finished the regular season starting 8-of-16 games and ranking 75th in fantasy receiver scoring. Due a $2.425 million offseason roster bonus and turning 31, Jenkins is very likely to be a salary cap casualty.

Jenkins picked up extra snaps in the second half when Jerome Simpson was sent for concussion tests. Three plays after just missing a diving touchdown, Jenkins hauled in a perfectly-placed 3-yard pass in tight coverage for the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter. He's not a recommended fantasy option in playoff leagues.

Jenkins racked up catches, yards, and targets in comeback mode with the Vikings attempting to erase a deficit. He got the start in place of Jerome Simpson (leg, back). Jenkins is 30 years old, and we strongly doubt he's suddenly going to become a viable fantasy contributor. Leave him on the waiver wire.
