Giants informed OT Shawn Andrews of his release.
Andrews couldn't find common ground with the Giants on a restructured agreement. The Giants save $7.333 million by releasing the oft-injured 28-year-old, so this move was a no-brainer. Tue, Jul 26, 2011 07:43:00 PM

The Giants can save $7.333 million under the salary cap by releasing OT Shawn Andrews before the season.

This move will happen with a quickness after the lockout. It's also a reason to be wary of jumping to conclusions about free agent activity based on "projected cap numbers" on ESPN.com. Teams can redo contracts, cut players with bloated salaries, and extend other players with bloated salaries to spread out their cap hits to save room. Every team in the league should be able to make at least one big move for an outside free agent if they choose.

LT Shawn Andrews is not likely to be back with the Giants, according to the New York Daily News.

The Giants would be crazy to pay Andrews a $3.5 million roster bonus. His chronic back woes and questionable drive mean he'll almost certainly be released. Andrews could eventually be brought back on the cheap, but the Giants may have seen enough.

Giants GM Jerry Reese doesn't foresee LT Shawn Andrews' chronic back problems going away anytime soon.

"The rest of his career, I think that is just a problem he’s going to have to manage," said Reese. Andrews is physically unreliable, which is why the G-Men can't afford to pay his $3.5 million offseason roster bonus. Look for Andrews to be released, and potentially re-signed for less money at a later date.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (back) remains without a timetable for a return to practice.

Andrews claims he will practice "very soon" and has no doubt that he will return. "I will play again this season," Andrews emphasized. David Diehl is expected to return this week to guard Eli Manning's blindside.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (back) will do some running on the side during Wednesday's practice.

Coach Tom Coughlin says Andrews "feels better." He would seem to be a long shot to play this weekend, but it sounds like he's at least progressing. The Giants will get David Diehl back this week but will still likely be without Andrews and Shaun O'Hara.

Giants declared LT Shawn Andrews, LT David Diehl, WR Steve Smith, WR Hakeem Nicks, WR Devin Thomas, LB Phillip Dillard, C Shaun O'Hara, and CB/KR Will Blackmon inactive for Week 12 against the Jaguars.

Capable backup Will Beatty steps in on Eli Manning's blindside and Darius Reynaud is back on returns with Blackmon out. Rookie NT Linval Joseph is active for the first time in over a month and Gerris Wilkinson returns from a broken hand. Derek Hagan starts opposite Mario Manningham with Smith and Nicks out.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Shawn Andrews' back is "all but certain to keep him out Sunday."

Though he has left the hospital, he remains doubtful to play Sunday. Andrews' absence further fuels speculation that the Giants will have a run-focused game plan against Jaguars in Week 12. Both Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are RB2 options given the bevy of carries the Giants are expected to give their backs. Will Beatty is expected to start at left tackle in place of Andrews.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (back) is listed as doubtful for Week 12.

Andrews was still in the hospital Friday after experiencing too much back pain to practice on Thursday. It's more reason to expect a run-heavy game plan from the Giants against the Jaguars, particularly with both starting wideouts out. Expect plenty of touches for Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews was reportedly sent to a local hospital because his back was in too much pain to practice Thursday.

The Giants had been used to Andrews missing practice, but until now they figured it could be papered over. Andrews' absence would be a big blow to the offense, but they do have a talented backup in Will Beatty.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (questionable, back) made the trip with the team to Philadelphia.

Andrews is likely a game-time decision. If he cannot go, Will Beatty will get the nod at left tackle.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (back) is "optimistic" about playing in Week 11, but is listed as questionable on the injury report.

"I don’t want to really give any percentages on where I am physically," Andrews said, "but I will say I’m excited about where I am right now." Though Andrews believes he's avoided structural damage, it'd be risking a major setback if he played against Trent Cole and the Eagles. William Beatty is a talented backup, but has played just five snaps since Week 1.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews (back) sat out practice again Thursday.

Andrews' back injury isn't suspected to be serious, but his status for Week 11 is yet to be determined. If he's unable to go, the Giants would be without three starting linemen, as LT/LG David Diehl and C Shaun O’Hara will not suit up.

Early indications are that Giants LT Shawn Andrews' back injury isn't serious.

It doesn't necessarily mean he'll be ready by the weekend, but you can bet Andrews will do everything he can to be available against the Eagles, his former team. Andrews has a history of back problems. The Giants are already without LT/LG David Diehl and C Shaun O’Hara on the offensive line.

Giants LT Shawn Andrews missed Wednesday's practice with a back injury.

Good thing William Beatty is healthy. Andrews has a lengthy history of back woes, which at one point all but knocked him out of the league. His status for Sunday night's game against the blitz-happy Eagles is unknown.
