The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac confirms that "it's about money" with free agent OT Flozell Adams not joining the Steelers this season.
Adams was released after refusing to take a paycut on his scheduled $5 million salary. The Steelers have moved rookie Marcus Gilbert into the starting lineup, but both tackles figure to remain an issue all season long. Tue, Sep 13, 2011 03:06:00 PM

Steelers released OT Flozell Adams.

Adams refused to take a pay cut on his $5 million salary, so he's gone. It's the smart move after Pittsburgh re-signed Willie Colon. Adams is 36 years old, and would be better suited for a backup role at this stage of his career.

Flozell Adams will reportedly have to accept a paycut to return to the Steelers.

As we suspected. Adams simply isn't worthy of a $5 million salary, so he'd have to cut that in half to return. Adams' agent indicated that he'd only be willing to stay in Pittsburgh as a starter, which may not be guaranteed. The Steelers also hope to bring back free agent OT Jonathan Scott, presumably in a reserve role.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette thinks there's a good chance Flozell Adams will remain the Steelers' starting right tackle next season.

Adams recently confirmed he will be returning for a 14th season in 2011, but the Steelers are believed to be looking for an offensive tackle in the draft. However, Bouchette thinks the most likely scenario is Pittsburgh drafting a tackle to play behind Adams for one season before taking over as a starter in 2012.

The player rep for OT Flozell Adams confirmed that the 35-year-old will return for a 14th season in 2011.

Adams was uncertain about his future immediately after the Super Bowl loss in February. The Steelers have stated that they want Adams back for another season, but he may have to take a paycut from his scheduled salary of $5 million.

Team president Art Rooney II seconded coach Mike Tomlin's sentiment that the Steelers want RT Flozell Adams back in 2011.

ESPN's Adam Schefter speculated via Twitter days ago that Adams could be among the veterans released this week. The Steelers will hang onto him with Willie Colon's future in doubt. It's a good bet that Adams will still be asked to restructure.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin reiterated Monday that he wants RT Flozell Adams to return for 2011.

Perhaps the Steelers are buttering up Adams for a contract restructuring, because we can't imagine the 36-year-old being kept at his $5 million scheduled salary. If Adams does play a 14th season, Pittsburgh could consider starting him at right tackle and re-signing Willie Colon to play right guard coming off his Achilles' tear. On paper, the unit would look much improved.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams is undecided about returning for a 14th season in 2011.

Adams is due $5 million next season, but he has no chance of seeing that money. That figure was included to make last year's contract look better than it actually was. The man Adams replaced, Willie Colon, is due to hit free agency, though he's expected to re-sign.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams had to be helped off the field after sustaining a left shoulder injury late in the first quarter of the Super Bowl.

Adams had his legs kicked out from under him while trying to tackle Packers safety Nick Collins on a pick-six. He landed awkwardly on his shoulder, forcing Trai Essex into the game for several plays. Adams returned to the game for the start of the second quarter.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams left Saturday's Divisional Round game at the half with an illness.

He's questionable to return. Pittsburgh has cut Baltimore's lead to 21-14 after Adams was abused in the first half, so it wouldn't be surprising if he's down for the day. Adams was destroyed by Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said RT Flozell Adams didn't play to his normal level in Week 14 due to his ankle injury.

It's no surprise, given that Adams is trying to gut it out through a high ankle sprain. The Steelers offensive line has dealt with so many injuries that they can't afford to sit Adams out even though he's clearly at less than 100 percent. Even when hindered, he's a better option than Trai Essex.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams (ankle) returned to practice Thursday.

Adams injury is being classified as a "mild" high ankle sprain. He's expected to be healthy enough to start against the Bengals on Sunday. Keeping Trai Essex on the bench qualifies as good news for Ben Roethlisberger.

Coach Mike Tomlin clarified RT Flozell Adams' high ankle sprain as "mild" on Tuesday.

Even if it's mild, a high ankle sprain will likely keep Adams out of the lineup this week. Backup Trai Essex could struggle against Bengals rookie Carlos Dunlap, who has racked up 4.5 sacks in the past four weeks.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday night's win over the Ravens.

Adams has been dealing with ankle woes for much of the year. Linemen can play on severe ankle sprains easier than skill players, but this is likely to cost Adams at least a game. Backup Trai Essex is a major downgrade.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams left in the third quarter Sunday night with an ankle injury.

Adams has been dealing with an ankle injury since Week 7 and evidently aggravated that injury. The Steelers simply can't afford any more injuries to their offensive line, so they're desperately hoping Adams is alright. He's being considered questionable to come back, but he left for the locker room for an X-ray, so a return seems unlikely. Trai Essex has replaced him at right tackle.
