Houston's DE Adewale Ogunleye should become a bigger factor as he gets more acclimated to the defense, writes Texan beat writer Nick Scurfield.

No need to place an IDP waiver wire claim on the veteran. In spite of registering 6.5 sacks in 2009, Ogunleye has lost significant burst off the line that made him a Pro Bowler back in 2003, and should be limited mostly to passing down work. Mario Williams, owner of four of the Texans' five sacks in 2010, is the end to own in Houston.

Texans signed DE Adewale Ogunleye, formerly of the Bears.

The tape on Ogunleye's 2009 must be underwhelming. He drew little interest as a free agent despite racking up 6.5 sacks in 14 starts last year. Now fully recovered from a fractured fibula sustained last December, he'll compete for the situational pass rushing role in Houston.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans will work out free agent DEs Adewale Ogunleye and Bobby McCray on Tuesday.

Earlier today NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported that the team showed interest in free agent DE Leonard Little. The Texans are looking to replace DE Connor Barwin, who was lost for the season on Sunday.

The Patriots worked out free agent Adewale Ogunleye on Sunday.

Profootballtalk's Mike Florio speculates that Ogunleye could replace Derrick Burgess if Burgess decides to retire. Ogunleye, 33, has never played in a 3-4 scheme like the Patriots', but did have 6.5 sacks in 14 starts last season.

Bears coach Lovie Smith confirmed Wednesday that the team will not pursue re-signing free agent DE Adewale Ogunleye.

"He'll get on with someone else," Smith said, "and I still feel like he can play." The Bears are moving forward with Julius Peppers. Ogunleye, coming off a fractured right fibula, has yet to draw known interest on the open market.

Beat writer Brad Biggs says that the Bears could negotiate with impending unrestricted free agent Adewale Ogunleye at some point.

The passing of Gaines Adams will likely force to the Bears to rethink their plans at defensive end. Ogunleye had 6 1/2 sacks in 14 games last season before fracturing his fibula. He'll test the market but may not find it too kind as he enters his age-33 season.

Adewale Ogunleye is expected to be "fully cleared or close to it" from his fractured fibula when the free agent market opens on March 5.

"The leg is good. I've just been resting it," he confirmed. The Bears' need for defensive ends increased following the passing of Gaines Adams. O-Gun is expected to test the market, but Chicago may look into re-signing him.

Impending free agent DE Adewale Ogunleye estimated Monday that his chances of re-signing with the Bears are "50-50."

"Hopefully, it's here. I pray it's here," he said of his future. "If not, that's the way the business goes." Ogunleye is overly optimistic. The Bears already made contingency plans by trading for Gaines Adams, and have 2009 third-round pick Jarron Gilbert as another option to start at left defensive end in '10.

Bears placed LE Adewale Ogunleye (leg) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Ogunleye, 32, is expected to fully recover from this small fracture in his fibula, but his career with the Bears may be over. He'll be a free agent after this season and the Bears traded for Gaines Adams to possibly take his spot. Ogunleye finishes the season with 6 1/2 sacks.

Bears LE Adewale Ogunleye suffered a small fracture to his left fibula during Sunday's loss to the Ravens and is almost certainly done for the season.

Ogunleye was already in a walking boot with crutches after the game. He likely won't need surgery, but it's an injury that takes six weeks to heal. At age 32 and in the final year of his contract, Ogunleye's future with the team is in serious doubt. They'll get a look at Gaines Adams and Mark Anderson in the final two games of the season.

Bears LE Adewale Ogunleye left Sunday's game in the third quarter with a lower leg injury.

"Lower leg" injuries are usually to ankles. Ogunleye has 6.5 sacks on the season. The 32-year-old is playing in the last year of his contract.

Bears President Ted Phillips is not ruling out re-signing DE Adewale Ogunleye after the season.

The trade for Gaines Adams put the writing on the wall for Ogunleye, who is in the last year of his contract. "I couldn't imagine why we wouldn't want him back, but that's obviously something that we will worry about down the road," Phillips said. Expect Ogunleye to test the market this offseason.

With the Bears acquiring Gaines Adams from Tampa on Friday, it could mean that Adewale Ogunleye might not be getting a contract extension in Chicago after the season.

Ogunleye, 32, is in the final year of his contract and leads the team with 4.5 sacks on the season. His asking price will likely be rather high, and another team might be willing to give him a big deal. DE Mark Anderson is also in a contract year, and he hasn't been as productive as Bears' fans and coaches have hoped.

Bears beat writer Brad Biggs speculates that Adewale Ogunleye could get a contract extension at some point this season.

Ogunleye, 32, had a huge game Sunday night, picking up two sacks in the first quarter. He is making $4.8 million this season, the final year of his contract. Biggs points out that even though Ogunleye is declining, the Bears don't have many other options.
