Lions released S Dwight Smith.
Smith was an ex-Tampa Rod Marinelli holdover, hasn't been effective in three years, and would've cost $3 million to keep. The 30-year-old could latch on as a backup in Chicago if Marinelli, now the Bears' defensive line coach, still holds him in high regard. But Smith shouldn't be counted on to start. Lions placed FS Dwight Smith (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Smith signed a two-year deal in the offseason, but he's no longer close to a good starter. If a new coaching staff is brought in this offseason, he is fairly certain to be out of a job.

Lions FS Dwight Smith is considered week to week with a sprained foot.

Detroit served up 328 passing yards to Jason Campbell in Week 8 without Smith and is likely to be obliterated again by Kyle Orton on Sunday. Kalvin Pearson started for Smith last week and made four tackles (two solo).

Lions FS Dwight Smith (foot) has been ruled out for Week 8.

As if the Lions could afford to lose another starter on defense. Smith isn't a good player anymore, but his backup, LaMarcus Hicks, is practice squad material. Upgrade the Redskins' passing game.

Lions signed FS Dwight Smith, formerly of the Vikings, to a two-year, $5 million contract. The deal includes a $350,000 signing bonus.

Unless Gerald Alexander kicks to corner, which seems possible now, Kenoy Kennedy won't be back in Detroit. The Vikings struggled against the pass in 2007, but Smith made plays, picking off four passes and batting down nine. He knows Rod Marinelli's scheme well and will likely start at free safety.

In addition to OL L.J. Shelton, free agent FS Dwight Smith will visit with the Lions on Wednesday.

Shelton's visit was set up last week. Smith would form a rotation with Daniel Bullocks and Gerald Alexander, indicating that if he signs, Kenoy Kennedy could be cut. Detroit may also consider moving Alexander to cornerback.

The Steelers and Lions have contacted free agent FS Dwight Smith.

Detroit is inexperienced at safety, though Gerald Alexander showed promise. We doubt Smith will go there with Kenoy Kennedy under contract and Daniel Bullocks returning. The Steelers appear to be souring on Anthony Smith.

Vikings released FS Dwight Smith.

He would've cost the Vikings $3.1 million in 2008 and Brad Childress had enough of Smith's off-field antics. Minnesota's pass defense was also very mediocre last year. Smith may struggle to find a starting job in free agency.

Vikings FS Dwight Smith had his misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession dropped Tuesday in a Minneapolis court.

Smith has a past of off-field problems and could've faced a suspension had he not been found innocent, though he may still get fined. He seems likely to be back as a starter in 2008 after making 51 tackles and four INTS last year.

Vikings FS Dwight Smith is expected to play this week despite a misdemeanor citation for marijuana possession this week.

The charge is punishable by a $125 fine for a first offense. Any possible suspension from the league wouldn't be likely until next year.

According to the police report, Smith admitted to an officer that he'd "just got done smoking some marijuana" after the trooper noticed a suspicious aroma emanating from Smith's vehicle. Smith has a history of off-field problems and could face a suspension following this incident.
