The Bears have "talked about" re-signing free agent DT Tommie Harris.
Harris was cut by Chicago last offseason, when he was scheduled to earn $5.3 million. After losing Amobi Okoye and cutting Anthony Adams, there's a fresh need for depth up front. Harris would be no higher than fourth on depth chart if he's brought back. "He could be productive in stretches," one personnel director said of Harris recently. "But he has degenerative knees. It will be a question as to whether or not he can get through a season." Wed, May 9, 2012 08:58:00 AM

Chargers signed DL Tommie Harris, formerly of the Colts.

Formerly a three-technique defensive tackle in Indianapolis and Chicago, Harris was announced as a "DE" in San Diego's press release. He's playing in a 3-4 scheme for the first time in his life. The Chargers can't expect much from Harris, whose pass-rushing burst is long gone. He'll back up RE Corey Liuget.

Colts released DT Tommie Harris.

Harris flashed in the third preseason game, recording a sack and a pass defensed against Green Bay. A 90-game starter with the Bears over seven years, Harris may be a candidate to reunite with former coordinator Ron Rivera in Carolina.

Colts signed DT Tommie Harris to a one-year contract.

New England was also interested. The Colts haven't traditionally been a team that looks outside the organization for help, but they've added three former first-round picks in the past two days (Harris, Ernie Sims, Jamaal Anderson). The Colts and Bears run similar defensive schemes, so it makes sense to take a flier on Harris. Expectations should be low, as knee injuries have sapped Harris' power and once-explosive first step.

The Patriots will host free agent DT Tommie Harris for a private workout on Monday.

It's another indication that the Patriots are moving to a truer 4-3 defense. Harris, in his prime, was a penetrating three-technique tackle and not a fit for a 3-4. He has obvious medical concerns and hasn't been an effective pass rusher since 2007-2008, but it can't hurt to kick the 28-year-old's tires.

The Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei thinks the Bears have turned the page on free agent DT Tommie Harris.

Pompei does not believe the Bears will consider bringing Harris back even if he can be re-signed for a bargain-basement price. Coming off two consecutive disappointing seasons, bargain-basement will likely be the only kind of deal Harris can get. For what it's worth, he said earlier this offseason that he has not ruled out returning to Chicago.

Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune suggests that free agent DT Tommie Harris will sign with the Colts once the lockout ends.

This was McClure's first tweet in a week, so he must be hearing something in the grapevine. It's hard to imagine that Harris has much left, but if healthy he's a natural fit in Indianapolis' Cover-2, Chicago-like scheme. The Colts could view the 28-year-old as a rehab project worthy of a one-year trial.

Several scouts believe free agent DT Tommie Harris no longer has the same lower-body strength that he boasted early in his career.

Harris still maintains "some of the quickness," but multiple knee injuries as well as a serious hamstring tear have sapped his power. The 28-year-old may have to settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal on the open market.

Free agent DT Tommie Harris insists he will only re-join the Bears if he can do so "on his own terms."

"I don't burn any bridges so I would never say never," Harris said of a potential return. "I'm not taking the first offer that's out there. I'm going to present myself as healthy as possible."

Bears released DT Tommie Harris.

The Bears had some interested in retaining Harris if he took a sizable pay cut, but he wasn't willing. A three-time Pro Bowler, Harris was slated to make $2.3 million in 2011, in addition $3 million in bonuses. Harris' play has declined rapidly in recent seasons. The 28-year-old had only 13 tackles and two sacks in 2010, and was even benched for Matt Toeania on occasion.

The Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei believes DT Tommie Harris will only be a Bear in 2011 if he takes a pay cut.

Due a $2.5 million roster bonus on June 1 in addition to his $2.3 million salary, Harris is primed to be vastly overpaid after notching just 13 tackles and two sacks in 2010. With this year's draft full of defensive-line talent, Harris will almost certainly be asked to renegotiate his contract.

Bears coach Lovie Smith indicated Monday that he expects DT Tommie Harris to return in 2011.

Harris came on a bit in the playoffs, but he was a non-factor all regular season with career lows in tackles (13) and sacks (1.5). Harris plays three technique, a position that becomes worthless and a drag on a defense if the player isn't getting penetration. Harris is due a $2.3 million salary in 2011. It's also believed that he has a sizable option bonus coming up.

The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs thinks DT Matt Toeaina's extension is another indication that Tommie Harris will not be back next season.

Harris has started over Toeaina the last three games, but he's due a $2.5 million roster bonus on June 1 that the Bears probably aren't willing to pay. He has just 11 tackles and half a sack in 14 games this season, as he's clearly past his prime.

Bears DT Tommie Harris started ahead of Matt Toeaina for the second straight game Monday.

The three-time Pro Bowler hasn't made a tackle in three weeks despite starting the last two times out. Though he appears to be out of the doghouse, Harris simply isn't an impact player anymore.

Bears GM Jerry Angelo concedes that DT Tommie Harris has been a disappointment this season.

"I was hoping we would see more," Angelo said. "It's just not clicking. I'm not giving up hope that it can't [click] because we still see the quickness and athleticism that you need to see in practice. Unfortunately, we're not seeing it as much on Sunday." Asked for response, Harris replied, "He's right."
