Patriots NT Vince Wilfork (illness) was added to the Week 8 injury report.

The Patriots are expected to keep Vince Wilfork more at nose tackle in 2011, rather than kicking him to end as they did last year.

Wilfork played over 40 percent of his snaps at "five technique," mostly because Patriots ends combined to miss more than 30 games. The Pats would "clearly" prefer Wilfork push the pocket and create havoc in the middle going forward. They're likely to use one of their premium picks on a defensive end this draft, and also get back all of the injured players from 2010.

Patriots signed NT Vince Wilfork to a five-year, $40 million contract. The deal includes $25 million guaranteed.

He got an $18 million signing bonus. The oft-frugal Patriots really ponied up here, showing just how much Wilfork is worth as the anchor of their 3-4 system despite being a two-down player. Wilfork, 28, has a good shot to fulfill the deal because nose tackles tend to last longer than most positions and he's shown no signs of decline. Wilfork is now the second highest paid defensive tackle in the league, behind only Washignton's Albert Haynesworth.

Patriots owner Bob Kraft said Wednesday that the club is close to striking a long-term deal with franchise player Vince Wilfork.

"Both sides have worked hard," Kraft said. "I think we're close and I hope we close something. He was our priority, the first priority." The Patriots have until the mid-July franchise deadline to extend Wilfork for the long haul.

Vince Wilfork's wife indicated on Twitter that her husband will not make any drastic moves despite receiving an unwanted franchise tag from the Patriots Monday.

"After six years of dedicated service i do understand this is a business," Bianca Wilfork tweeted. "It is my hope that the tag is applied for its true purpose...of alotting more time for us to continue our talks and be able to reach along term agreement. Only time will tell what the final result will be."

Patriots designated NT Vince Wilfork as their franchise player.

The move guarantees that he'll receive a $7.003 million salary in 2010. Wilfork has made it clear, though, that he didn't want the tag and it's believed the sides reached a stalemate in long-term contract talks last week. Still, the Pats were never going to let their 28-year-old defensive centerpiece leave. The deadline for franchise players to sign multi-year deals is in mid-July.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a "standoff" between the Patriots and impending free agent NT Vince Wilfork may be taking place in New England.

Wilfork will be very upset if the Patriots slap him with the franchise tag, but no long-term extension appears to be imminent. Once the tag is applied, though, the sides have until mid-July to reach a multi-year deal. The Pats would likely prefer to lock Wilfork up, which would make both sides happy.

The Boston Globe considers it "virtually certain" that the Patriots will use the franchise tag on Vince Wilfork.

Wilfork, an unrestricted free agent, has not been in contact with the team recently about an extension. Though Wilfork has said publicly he'd like to play for a team near his home in Miami, the Pats won't let him get away.

Free agent NT Vince Wilfork said Thursday that playing for either Miami or Tampa Bay would be a "dream come true."

Wilfork went to the University of Miami, so playing in Florida would be a homecoming. It's an unlikely scenario, however, as the Pats will slap him with the franchise tag if they can't come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

Free agent NT Vince Wilfork reiterated that he will be upset if the Patriots use the franchise tag on him next month.

"It’s just basically a slap in my face and it’s insulting to me to tell me I’m an okay player," said Wilfork, 28. "(The franchise tag) is decent money for most people out there. What I do, it’s okay. I don't look at myself as an okay player. I want a long-term deal or I want to be free. Point blank."

Vince Wilfork said after Sunday's season-ending loss that he will "of course" be upset if the Patriots slap him with the franchise tag this offseason.

"I want a long-term deal," he said. "That’s something that me and my wife want. That’s first and foremost. We’ll see what’s going on in that area and go from there." The Pats haven't seemed to be in any rush to lock up Wilfork long term, but they won't let him get away, even if it means using the tag.

Patriots NT Vince Wilfork (ankle) confirmed that he will return for Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Ty Warren (ankle) will also return, which means the Patriots defensive line will be at full strength for the matchup against Ray Rice and Willis McGahee.

Patriots NT Vince Wilfork (ankle) and DE Ty Warren (ankle) are expected to return for the Ravens game this week.

Wilfork has been rested the past two weeks while Warren rested Sunday in a game where Arian Foster led a 144-yard attack at 5.3 YPC. The Pats need both key run-stoppers against Ray Rice and an invigorated Willis McGahee.

Patriots declared DL Vince Wilfork, QB Isaiah Stanback, DB Terrence Wheatley, DB Darius Butler, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, OL Rich Ohrnberger, DL Titus Adams and OL Nick Kaczur inactive for Week 16 against the Jaguars.

Ty Warren's return will help, but being without Wilfork up front is good news for Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jaguars.

Jason La Canfora reports that NT Vince Wilfork (foot) is a true game-time decision for Sunday's game against Jacksonville while DE Ty Warren (ankle) is expected to start.

The possible absence of Wilfork up front is good news for Maurice Jones-Drew and his fantasy owners. Warren missed Week 15 but is returning to help bolster the Pats' No. 15 rush defense. Rookie Ron Brace will see more action if Wilfork is out.
