Bengals released DT Tank Johnson.
Johnson was due $2.25 million this season, but was getting squeezed out of a role while coming off a knee injury. Pat Sims is getting healthy while Geno Atkins and Clinton McDonald are coming on behind Domata Peko. The Bengals will likely also use LE Robert Geathers as an interior pass rusher more, sliding inside on third downs. Tue, Aug 16, 2011 09:15:00 AM

Bengals placed DT Tank Johnson on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

Johnson likely could have made it back this season, but the Bengals need depth for their banged up secondary, so they brought in Fred Bennett to replace Johnson on the roster. Tank had a minimal impact, registering 10 tackles and no sacks in seven games. He's under contract for 2011 at $2.25 million.

Bengals DT Tank Johnson left Sunday's game against the Dolphins with a right knee injury.

Johnson limped off with assistance and was headed to the locker room. He's considered questionable to return.

Bengals re-signed DT Tank Johnson to a four-year contract.

The deal is likely year to year in nature. Johnson, 28, is a pass rusher in theory, but recorded just two sacks in 2009 and has only five in the last three years. The Bengals should stay on the lookout for interior rushers in the draft. Penn State's Jared Odrick and UCLA's Brian Price would fit well.

Free agent DT Tank Johnson indicated on his Twitter page Monday that he's reached a contract to stay with Cincinnati.

"Cinci we got a deal!" he tweeted. "Very greatfull to The Browns and all the Who Dey Nation!!! I'm Baaaaaaaack!!!! Now let's win some more." Tank was showing his love to the Brown family, not the Cleveland team. The Bengals were the only team likely to give Johnson a starting job.

The Bengals are reportedly in contract talks to retain free agent DT Tank Johnson.

It would be in Cincinnati's best interest if Johnson returned as only a 25-30 snap-per-game reserve. The 29-year-old mustered just sacks a year ago.

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said he is hopeful that DT Tank Johnson will be re-signed.

Tank is set to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. He kept his nose clean last year, but wasn't productive enough as a penetrator inside.

The Bengals are believed to be interested in re-signing DT Tank Johnson.

The team has already made an opening offer. Johnson stayed out of trouble all season while helping the Bengals' run defense, so it makes sense that they'd want to bring him back to start next to Domata Peko.

Bengals DT Tank Johnson suffered a right foot injury during Sunday's game against the Steelers.

The controversial Johnson is doubtful to return.

Tank Johnson has moved ahead of Pat Sims as the Bengals' starting right defensive tackle.

It was an expected move, but it may end up hurting the run defense. Sims teamed up with Domata Peko to key a defensive turnaround in the trenches late last season. Johnson is more of a penetrator than a plugger.

Bengals beat writer Chick Ludwig expects Tank Johnson and Domata Peko to be the starting defensive tackles this season.

Pat Sims would rotate at tackle and end, which could hurt the Bengals run defense. Sims severely outplayed Johnson last season and emerged as a key cog in the improved defense down the stretch.

Bengals signed DT Tank Johnson to a one-year contract.

Johnson is only 27 and fits Cincy's 4-3 better than he did Dallas' 3-4, but it's a disturbing addition for a team that already had a laundry list of bad apples. Johnson missed half of the '07 season for violating the NFL's conduct policy and has been arrested several times as a pro. The Bengals hope he'll avoid trouble and help in a rotation with Pat Sims and Domata Peko.

The Bengals visited with free agent DT Tank Johnson this week.

Good to see they're still concentrating on high-character guys in Cincinnati. Not only was Johnson's play a disappointment in Dallas last season, he also got into a verbal altercation with several teammates during and after the final game.

ESPN's Ed Werder confirms that impending free agent NT Tank Johnson will not be retained by the Cowboys this offseason.

This was reported two days ago in the Dallas Morning News. Tank kept his nose clean with Dallas and likely has a better chance of finding a team in 2009 than Adam Jones. Johnson could help a team running a 4-3 defense.

Cowboys free agent NT Tank Johnson is not expected back in Dallas next season.

Johnson got into verbal altercations with several Cowboys in Week 17, and he even gloated about being a free agent after the final game. Jay Ratliff emerged as an Pro Bowler while Tank failed to make much of an impact at all.
