Coach Brad Childress says Dontarrious Thomas may immediately step in as the Vikings' starting middle linebacker despite signing Monday.

David Herron suffered "several injuries" in last week's win and Thomas knows the system. He'd be a nice grab for IDP spot use against Chicago.

Vikings signed LB Dontarrious Thomas.

Thomas knows Minnesota's system, having played there 2004-2007, but didn't make the 49ers this summer. Still, the Vikes have a glaring hole in the middle and Thomas could emerge as a candidate to start there soon.

49ers agreed to terms with LB Dontarrious Thomas, formerly of the Vikings.

And the Niners have a new outside linebacker. Thomas, who was miscast in a Cover Two 4-3 scheme, gets a chance to show why he was a second-round pick in 2004. Patrick Willis gets the tackles inside for the 49ers, so Thomas' IDP upside will be limited. He may also have to hold off Brandon Moore.

Vikings coach Brad Childress says one of the scenarios he's considering at MLB is replacing Napoleon Harris with Dontarrious Thomas.

Harris is a free agent and looks likely to depart. Thomas, E.J. Henderson, and Chad Greenway are all candidates to start in the middle this year.

Dontarrious Thomas will start at middle linebacker for the Vikings as long as Napoleon Harris (wrist) is sidelined.

Playing in coordinator Mike Tomlin's Tampa 2, the MIKE linebacker has big-play chances. Thomas had eight tackles and a sack in Week 9.

LB Dontarrious Thomas (shoulder) said yesterday that he hopes to play Sunday after missing last week's win over Green Bay.

"I think it is realistic," Thomas said. "The one thing we were worried about is my strength and it's coming along really good."

This was a position battle that was over before it started. Thomas has more skill and more smarts than Raonall Smith.

''I have not seen to this point the consistency that I've been looking out of either one of those athletes.'' We're surprised E.J. Henderson isn't getting a look there.
