The foot injury that ended CB Shawntae Spencer's season was a serious Lisfranc sprain.
Similar to the Darren McFadden situation last year, the Raiders never revealed the true extent of Spencer's injury. The impending free agent will have to prove his health before attracting interest on the open market this summer. Tue, Dec 11, 2012 08:18:00 AM

Raiders placed CB Shawntae Spencer (foot) on season-ending injured reserve.

Spencer started the first two games of the season but has been out ever since with a sprained foot. Michael Huff and Ronald Bartell will now be the starting corners after the release of Pat Lee on Saturday. Spencer is a free agent after the season.

Raiders CB Shawntae Spencer (foot) and RT Khalif Barnes (groin) are both considered "doubtful" for Week 8 against Kansas City.

Oakland will continue to trot out Michael Huff and Pat Lee as starting corners. Joselio Hanson has been the nickel back. The Chiefs' offense has looked so dysfunctional with Brady Quinn under center that we're skeptical they'll take advantage. Taking Barnes' place has been second-year UDFA Willie Smith.

Raiders RCB Shawntae Spencer (foot) did not practice on Friday and has been ruled out for Week 6 against Atlanta.

Spencer has been out since Week 2. Michael Huff will continue to fill in at cornerback opposite Pat Lee, and Matt Giordano will start at Huff's free safety spot. The Falcons are licking their chops at the sight of Oakland's depleted secondary.

Raiders RCB Shawntae Spencer's sprained right foot remains in a walking boot coming out of Oakland's Week 5 bye.

Spencer has missed three weeks now, and doesn't appear to be making much progress. LCB Ronald Bartell (cracked shoulder blade) won't return before Week 10. Continue to target Oakland's pathetic pass defense in fantasy matchups.

Raiders RCB Shawntae Spencer is out indefinitely with a right foot sprain.

The extent is unknown, but foot sprains can sideline players for months or be as small as day-to-day injuries. It sounds like Spencer's is of the former variety. The Raiders are already minus top cornerback Ronald Bartell (broken shoulder) for the next 3-5 weeks, so they'll likely sign another cover guy off the street this week. Target this defense for fantasy passing-game matchups.

New Raiders CB Shawntae Spencer is reportedly "letting wide receivers do whatever they want" early in training camp.

Beat writer Vittorio Tafur suggests Spencer may already be a "concern for coaches," he's covering so poorly. Meanwhile, second-year corner Demarcus Van Dyke has had a strong camp and picked off a pass in Friday's practice. If Spencer doesn't pan out, DVD or Chimdi Chekwa could steal his starting job.

Shawntae Spencer is expected to enter training camp as a starting corner.

Ronald Bartell is locked in on one side, while Spencer is a good bet to hold off Demarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa on the other. Remember that Spencer fell off the map in San Francisco, tumbling down the depth chart until he was cut in March. Expect the Raiders to be in plenty of shootouts once again this season.

Raiders agreed to terms with CB Shawntae Spencer on a one-year contract.

The 30-year-old is staying in the Bay Area after starting 72-of-98 games over the past eight years with San Francisco. Spencer was often a game-day inactive last season after losing his starting job in training camp. Spencer joins former Rams veteran Ron Bartell in a rebuilt cornerback corps. Tracy Porter is scheduled to visit Oakland as well.

Free agent CB Shawntae Spencer visited the Raiders Friday.

The Raiders signed Ronald Bartell Friday, but still lack depth at corner after releasing Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson. Spencer could push 2011 draft pick Demarcus Van Dyke if signed.

49ers released CB Shawntae Spencer.

Spencer lost his starting job last summer before tumbling even further down the depth chart during the season, and was made expendable by the return of Carlos Rogers and signing of Perrish Cox. There was no chance the 49ers were going to pick up his $3.3 million salary. CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco recently listed Houston, Seattle and St. Louis as possible destinations for Spencer were he to be traded.

CSN Bay Area reports the 49ers will allow disgruntled CB Shawntae Spencer to seek a trade.

After losing his starting job while nursing a hamstring injury in training camp, Spencer had fallen to the No. 5 cornerback by the end of the season. He had started 32 consecutive games from 2009-2010. Due $3.3 million in 2012, the 30-year-old isn't going to attract much interest on the trade market. Beat writer Matt Maiocco lists the Texans, Seahawks, and Rams as possible fits.

Updating a previous item, the 49ers are expected to release CB Shawntae Spencer this offseason.

We initially speculated that the Niners might dangle Spencer on the trade market, but they're expected to cut ties with an unhappy player due $3.2 million. Current Texans DBs coach Vance Joseph tutored Spencer from 2005 until 2010, the last of which was Spencer's career year. After he's released, Spencer could become a candidate to replace free agent Jason Allen in Houston.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer hinted after Sunday's NFC Championship Game loss that he'd like to play elsewhere in 2012.

Spencer was benched for Tarell Brown by Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff. "I've been on that right corner since I've been here," Spencer said. "It's like seeing my lady with another guy. ... (But) there's plenty of women out there." Spencer is only 30 years old and is due a relatively manageable $3.2 million salary in 2012. He may have some suitors on the trade market.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer was a healthy scratch in last Sunday's win over the Redskins.

It's a rapid fall from grace for Spencer, who entered this season riding a streak of 32 consecutive starts. Now he has fallen behind starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown, and behind backups Chris Culliver and Tramaine Brock. The 49ers currently have the No. 1 scoring defense in the league.
