Bengals G/T Travelle Wharton (ACL surgery) is expected to be ready for training camp.
Wharton tore his right ACL last August and may not participate in May OTAs, but he should be fine for contact work. Wharton had been penciled in as Cincy's left guard last season, but Clint Boling took over and proved an upgrade. Wharton will return as a versatile reserve capable of playing guard and tackle. Bengals LG Travelle Wharton confirmed that his right ACL is torn, which will necessitate surgery next week.

The 31-year-old will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Wharton tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee back in 2006, but he doesn't believe this injury is as severe. Clint Boling, a downgrade in run blocking, will step in as the starter.

Bengals LG Travelle Wharton will undergo exploratory right knee surgery, and is expected to miss the entire season.

It sounds like his operation is expected to uncover a torn ACL. One of the only notable free agent signings for the typically spendthrift Bengals, Wharton will still receive nearly $5 million in 2012 payments and is under contract for $2.675 million each of the next two years. 2011 fourth-rounder Clint Boling is expected to take his place at left guard.

The Bengals believe LG Travelle Wharton's right knee injury is season ending.

Wharton was able to load himself onto the cart in Friday's preseason opener, but is apparently dealing with a serious tear. Wharton started all 16 games for the Panthers last season, but was limited to nine by a case of turf toe in 2010. If Wharton's indeed lost for the season, the Bengals will be forced to roll with 2011 fourth-rounder Clint Boling at left guard. Boling appeared in only five games as a rookie.

Bengals LG Travelle Wharton was forced from Friday's preseason opener with a right knee injury, and will not return.

Wharton was carted off, but got onto the cart under his own power. There weren't any obvious signs his injury was severe, but he'll certainly undergo a battery of tests. Released by the Panthers on the eve of free agency, Wharton signed a three-year deal with the Bengals three days later. He's backed up by Clint Boling.

Bengals signed OG Travelle Wharton, formerly of the Panthers, to a three-year, $10 million contract.

Wharton had also been drawing interest from the Rams. He's the tight-fisted Bengals' first signing of free agency and will likely be the team's starting left guard. Wharton graded out slightly below average in Pro Football Focus' rankings last season before his $7.6 million cap number earned him his walking papers. He could be a slight upgrade on Nate Livings.

Free agent OG Travelle Wharton will visit the Rams.

The Rams have a hole at guard, and could almost certainly offer the long-time Panther a starting job. He has no other known visits lined up.

Panthers released OG Travelle Wharton.

The move clears over $4 million in salary cap space, which the Panthers need after spending foolishly during the 2011 offseason and setting themselves up to be over the 2012 cap. Wharton, 31 in May, started 99 games across eight years with Carolina. In 2011, Wharton graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 38 guard among 77. Wharton shouldn't struggle to find another shot.

Panthers LG Travelle Wharton has a salary cap figure of $7.6 million for 2012.

Wharton is a prime candidate for a restructure or release, as the Panthers are a reported $9.6 million over the cap with exclusive rights and restricted free agents yet to sign. Tackle Byron Bell, who filled in for Jeff Otah last season, would be a candidate to move inside should the Panthers part ways with Wharton.

Panthers LG Travelle Wharton was held out of the second half of Sunday's win with a back injury.

"Jogging off (the field) it locked up on me as I'm leaving the field," Wharton said. "I tried to get it loosened up. It never would." Wharton has started all 12 games this season, and 95 for the Panthers since 2004. Graded out as one of the worst left guards in football by Pro Football Focus, Wharton should be considered day-to-day.

First-year Panthers coach Ron Rivera characterized Travelle Wharton as a "terrific" left guard.

Rivera called Wharton a "key player return(ing) from injury," after his season ended on I.R. with a severe case of turf toe. This all sounds good for Wharton's chances of staying in Carolina. He's due a $5.4 million base salary.

Panthers placed LG Travelle Wharton (toe) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Turf toe claims another victim. Wharton's play fell off considerably in 2010, especially as a run-blocker. The resurgence of the Panthers' ground attack coincides with Mackenzy Bernadeau replacing Wharton at left guard. Turning 30 this offseason, Wharton isn't worth his $3.9 million base salary.
Tue, Dec 14, 2010 04:37:00 PM

Panthers LG Travelle Wharton said his turf toe is "a whole lot better," but he wasn't sure if he'd be able to practice this week.

Mike Goodson produced a second-straight 100-yard game Sunday with Mackenzy Bernadeau at left guard, but the Panthers would still love to get Wharton back.
Tue, Nov 23, 2010 08:38:00 AM

Panthers LG Travelle Wharton has been diagnosed with turf toe.

Wharton's status for Week 11 is unknown as the Panthers' offensive line continues to get decimated by injuries. Mackenzy Bernadeau is a capable backup, but it's still a downgrade.
Mon, Nov 15, 2010 12:54:00 PM

Panthers LG Travelle Wharton left Sunday's loss to the Bucs with a toe/foot injury and did not return.

Wharton got his foot rolled up on from behind. X-rays taken were negative, but he's set for more testing. Mackenzy Bernadeau, who started seven games at left guard last year, came on in relief.
