Jacob Bell admits that health concerns, specifically the recent suicide of Junior Seau, played a big part in his decision to retire from football.
Bell called Seau's suicide the "cherry on top," meaning it pushed him into retirement. "God knows what he was really struggling and dealing with," Bell said. "But you have to believe it came from the game of football." Bell isn't sure how many concussions he suffered in St. Louis. "If you're telling me 'I'm seeing stars' is some sort of concussion, then you're getting a couple a week," explained Bell. "You're going to get a minimum 30 concussions in a season. That just gives you a ballpark figure of what people are truly dealing with." Wed, May 9, 2012 10:33:00 AM

Bengals OG Jacob Bell announced his retirement from football.

A source tells Profootballtalk that Bell "simply lost the desire to play." The 31-year-old started 100-of-109 career games with the Titans and Rams before signing with the Bengals last month. With first-rounder Kevin Zeitler slated for a starting job, Bell was headed for a reserve role in Cincinnati. Bell's effectiveness fell off precipitously in St. Louis last season.

Bengals signed OG Jacob Bell, formerly of the Rams.

Bell visited Cincinnati early in free agency, and his market had gone dead since. He likely accepted a vet-minimum deal. Now 31 years old, Bell has long been overrated by league evaluators and has clearly declined. The Bengals shouldn't count on Bell to provide anything more than depth at the guard spots.

Yahoo's Jason Cole reports free agent LG Jacob Bell will visit the Bengals.

Bell had a miserable year in St. Louis last season, routinely getting blown up in both the pass and run game before a sprained right MCL sent him to injured reserve in December. He played much better in 2010, however, and may still draw interest as a starter.

Rams placed LG Jacob Bell on injured reserve with a sprained right MCL, ending his season.

Bell's injury won't require surgery, but would have sidelined him 2-4 weeks and the Rams weren't going to wait to see if he could play in Week 17. Bell, 30, restructured his contract before the season and will be a free agent in 2012. He's almost certainly played his last snap in a St. Louis uniform.

Rams LG Jacob Bell has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain, and will be sidelined roughly four weeks.

He's a candidate for injured reserve. Bell had been the only Rams' offensive lineman to still be playing the same position he was in Week 1 before going down Sunday. Coach Steve Spagnuolo has yet to announce how the Rams will shuffle their line, but Tony Wragge is a good bet to take over at left guard.

Rams LG Jacob Bell was forced from Sunday's game against the 49ers with a right knee injury, and is doubtful to return.

The only Rams' offensive lineman to still be manning the same position he was in Week 1, Bell remained down for several moments before walking off gingerly under his own power. With the Rams down big in the fourth quarter, he won't return today. He'll likely be questionable for Week 14.

Rams LG Jacob Bell was forced from Sunday's game against the Redskins with a hamstring injury.

As was DT Gary Gibson with a right hip injury. Both are questionable to return. Bell is hardly a star, but his loss is not good news for an already embattled Rams' offensive line. He's been replaced at left guard by Tony Wragge.

Rams LG Jacob Bell was in attendance at training camp practice on Saturday afternoon.

It appears Bell and the Rams worked out a restructured contract after it was widely reported Friday that he was set to be released. Bell will remain the Rams' starting left guard, joined by newest Ram Harvey Dahl. It's good news for Sam Bradford. Bell was one of the club's better pass blockers last year.

Rams released LG Jacob Bell.

Bell refused to restructure his contract, which called for $6 million in 2011. The Rams got average guard play out of Bell for three years, but he never came close to living up to the six-year, $36 million pact that lured him away from the Titans in 2008. The Rams once again have a vacancy at guard after signing Harvey Dahl away from the Falcons Friday.

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said LG Jacob Bell (concussion) "felt pretty good" Monday.

Bell suffered a concussion in the loss to the Lions. His status for Week 6 isn't clear yet, but it sounds like he's improving.

Rams LG Jacob Bell suffered a concussion in the team's Week 5 loss.

Bell also suffered a concussion last year, though it didn't cost him any starts because the Rams had a bye the next week. His Week 6 status is uncertain.
Sun, Oct 10, 2010 08:56:00 PM

Rams LG Jacob Bell is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday.

Bell should be fine for training camp as this was a routine scope. The Rams' ground game will be a story to track this summer with Bell and Steven Jackson recovering from surgeries while second-rounder Rodger Saffold enters the lineup at right tackle.

Rams placed LG Jacob Bell on injured reserve with a torn hamstring, ending his season.

The undersized Bell looked like a $36 million free agent bust in his first campaign with the Rams, but improved somewhat in this year and will likely return next season, mostly because of St. Louis' lack of quality alternatives. The 29-year-old (in March) is due a $5 million base salary in 2010.

Rams LG Jacob Bell is likely done for the season with a torn hamstring.

"It will not require surgery, but we may have to make a decision there on how long that is going to be," said coach Steve Spagnuolo. Bell will probably go on injured reserve later this week. Mark Setterstrom is his backup.
