In addition to Raheem Brock, the Texans worked out free agent DEs Dewayne White and James Wyche on Wednesday.
The Texans are looking for a replacement for Tim Bulman, who is out with a shoulder injury. Unlike Wyche, White has actually produced as a pass rusher at times in the NFL. Picking up any of the three would have no impact on Aaron Schobel's chances of joining the Texans. Wed, Aug 11, 2010 12:21:00 PM

The Omaha Nighthawks selected former Lions DE Dewayne White with the No. 1 overall pick in Wednesday's UFL Draft.

It's a good pick, and leaves us scratching our heads as to why White has drawn so little interest since the Lions released him in March. While White is injury prone, he was Detroit's best pass rusher during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He's also only 30 years old. The Nighthawks selected ex-Cardinals OLB Chike Okeafor with the first pick in the second round.

Lions released DE Dewayne White.

While White was a productive rusher in his first two years with Detroit, he was too often on the shelf, missing 10 of a possible 32 games since 2007. He also didn't have sack last year. The signing of Julius Peppers may lessen Chicago GM Jerry Angelo's interest, but Bears DL coach Rod Marinelli has been a longtime believer in White. The 30-year-old should come cheaply.

Beat writer Tom Kowalski believes DE Dewayne White could be on the roster bubble this offseason.

White has been one of the few effective Lions defenders the past few seasons, but the 30-year-old has also missed too much time with injuries. White is due $4 million in 2010. His roster spot hinges on the Lions' acquisitions over the next two months.

Lions RE Dewayne White (hamstring) is expected to miss Week 6.

White was unable to put in a full practice all week. He is Detroit's most proven pass rusher. Expect recently signed Turk McBride to start at right defensive end against the Packers. It's promising news for Aaron Rodgers' matchup.

The Lions anticipate being without both starting RE Dewayne White (hamstring) and DT Sammie Lee Hill (ankle) Sunday against Chicago. They're listed as doubtful.

As if Jay Cutler and Matt Forte's matchups could get any better. The awfully banged up Lions have also listed LE Cliff Avril (hamstring), WLB Ernie Sims (shoulder), and DT Grady Jackson (knee) as questionable. Detroit has no depth, so expect the Bears to rack up the points on Sunday.

Cliff Avril will reportedly have to beat out Dewayne White to win the Lions' starting right defensive end job.

Starting Avril and White at the same time would give Detroit its most pass rush potential, but the new coaching staff seems satisfied with Jared DeVries at left end. White has the tools to move there full time, but surprisingly didn't practice on the strong side all spring. He and Avril will probably end up rotating on the weak side, which would hurt both of their IDP stats.

Lions DE Dewayne White is expected to return Week 15 after missing four games with a calf strain.

The winless Lions will need all hands on deck as they try to slow down the Colts. They're also getting back CB Keith Smith (groin), who has missed four games.

Lions DE Dewayne White (calf) is not expected to return in Week 14.

Coach Rod Marinelli will start a pair of rookies, RE Cliff Avril and LE Andre Fluellen, against the Vikings. Fluellen could be a sneaky IDP play as he goes against shaky Vikings RT Ryan Cook. Avril would face LT Bryant McKinnie.

Lions DE Dewayne White (calf) is not expected to play on Thanksgiving.

Kerry Collins should have a clean cradle on Thursday, although the Titans will probably just run it down Detroit's throat. This will be White's third straight missed game. Corey Smith will continue to start at right defensive end.

Lions DE Dewayne White (calf) is not expected to play in Week 12.

Jeff Garcia should have a clean pocket all day Sunday, as White is the Lions' best pass rusher. Corey Smith will likely pick up another start at right end.

The Lions are expected to be without both of their starting DEs, Dewayne White (calf) and Jared DeVries (hand), in Week 11 against Carolina.

Ikaika Alama-Francis, Corey Smith, and Cliff Avril will probably rotate at both end spots. DeVries had surgery on his hand, but the Lions believe he could return after missing only one game. White is Detroit's best pass rusher.

Lions RE Dewayne White suffered a calf injury in Sunday's loss to the Jaguars and didn't return to the game.

His backup is rookie Cliff Avril.

Lions coach Rod Marinelli predicts Dewayne White will register "double digit" sacks at right defensive end this season.

In a perfect world White, who had six sacks in 2007, would be Detroit's left end, but no one's stepped up to claim the RE spot. Quick rookie Cliff Avril would seem the best fit there, but he's small and obviously inexperienced. Ikaika Alama-Francis and Jared DeVries are competing at left end for now.

Lions DE Dewayne White is expected to move to right end this season.

On that side, White will face fewer double teams, but will be going against more talented left tackles. Still, White figures to do more all-out pass rushing and should build on his six sack total from his first season as a Lion.
