Bears signed DL Israel Idonije, formerly of the Lions, to a one-year contract.
After a one-season stop in Detroit, Idonije returns to the Windy City where he spent the previous nine seasons. The 33-year-old is a movable piece along the defensive front for DC Mel Tucker but will have to earn his roster spot. Idonije appeared in 15 games last season, notching 11 tackles and a half-sack. Free agent DL Israel Idonije will visit the Bears Tuesday.

Idonije spent the first nine seasons of his career in Chicago, posting 28.5 sacks while playing all over the formation. He spent last season as a backup left end for the Lions, recording just a half-sack and two quarterback hits. Idonije, now 33 years old, would at least give the Bears' defensive line some familiarity as they incorporate Lamarr Houston and Willie Young.

Lions placed DL Israel Idonije on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his season.

Idonije appeared in all 15 games prior to getting injured, making 11 tackles. He's strictly a situational run stopper and is unlikely to attract much interest in free agency this offseason.

New Lions DL Israel Idonije said his primary role will be as a run-stopping end on early downs.

"In that the 4-3 style defense, stopping the run is the first focus," Idonije said. As a Bear, he was asked to get after the quarterback a little more, leading to 7.5 sacks and 51 disruptions last season. Now part of the Lions' deep defensive line rotation, we wouldn't expect Idonije to match those numbers.

Israel Idonije's one-year deal with the Lions is worth $840,000, and includes $485,000 in guaranteed money.

Idonije can earn $65,000 in bonuses for a potential total of $905,000. Because he was signed for the veteran's minimum, Idonije's cap hit is only $620,000. The Lions let Cliff Avril walk in free agency, and subsequently found themselves lacking depth at defensive end. Idonije will give Detroit quality snaps in their defensive line rotation.

New Lions DL Israel Idonije had 51 quarterback disruptions last season, just three fewer than Jason Pierre-Paul.

Idonije did his damage on 56 fewer pass-rush attempts. He can also stop the run from left end and rush from the inside on nickel downs. Although Idonije will turn 32 in November, the Lions stole a highly productive player. Pro Football Focus suggests that this year's Detroit defensive line might be better than the 2010 unit that graded out best in the entire league.

Lions signed DL Israel Idonije to a one-year contract.

After spending the first nine years of his career with the Bears, Idonije decides to stay in the division and join one of the league's top defensive lines. Capable of rushing the passer from both the end and tackle spots, he has racked up 20.5 sacks over the last three seasons while playing in Lovie Smith's 4-3 scheme. Idonije will be high-quality rotation piece in a unit that boasts Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley, Jason Jones and rookie Ziggy Ansah as starters.

The Chicago Tribune believes the Bears are out of the hunt to re-sign free agent DT Israel Idonije.

The Bears had a standing offer to Idonije at one point, but he didn't accept it and they moved forward with Sedrick Ellis. Idonije visited the Titans in late April. Otherwise, his free-agent market has been quite cool.

According to the Chicago Tribune, there are "no signs" the Bears plan to re-sign free agent DL Israel Idonije.

The Bears released DT Andre Fluellen on Monday, but it apparently wasn't with re-signing Idonije in mind. To date, the 32-year-old D-lineman has visited only the Titans in free agency.

The Titans hosted DL Israel Idonije for a free-agent visit Monday.

Idonije would add to Tennessee's defensive line rotation. He can play left end on running downs and rush inside in the nickel. "Izzy" is 32 years old.

The Bears have a "standing offer" out to free agent DL Israel Idonije, but a deal isn't "imminent."

The "standing offer" could be rescinded depending on what the Bears do in the draft, so Idonije has little more than a week to think things over. Idonije has made zero visits since the start of free agency.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Bears could still re-sign free agent DL Israel Idonije despite Wednesday's signings of DE Kyle Moore and DT Andre Fluellen.

Moore would seem to be Idonije's replacement, but perhaps he'll be back for a 10th season in Chicago if the price is exceedingly cheap. Idonije has reportedly drawn interest from the Titans and 49ers, but hasn't made any visits since the start of free agency.

NFL.com reports the Bears remain interested in re-signing free agent DL Israel Idonije, but must "fight off the 49ers to make it happen."

Predictably, the Bears' signing of DE Turk McBride hasn't stemmed their interest in Idonije, who tallied 7.5 sacks last season. Idonije is on the wrong side of 30, but would be a nice piece of depth for the 49ers behind Justin and Aldon Smith.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans have "shown some interest" in free agent DL Israel Idonije.

Idonije has stated that his priority is to remain with the Bears, but Chicago may be looking to move on from the 32-year-old. Idonije has missed just one game in the last six seasons, and he has 20.5 sacks over the last three years.

Free agent DL Israel Idonije says his "priority" is to re-sign with the Bears.

"My priority is to stay here and enjoy these next few years in Chicago with my friends, my family and with my organization," said Idonije. GM Phil Emery has already expressed interest in bringing the 32-year-old versatile lineman back, so it sounds like something can be worked out.
