The Saints will bring in free agent DL Anthony McFarland for a visit Sunday.
A signing isn't necessarily imminent as the team just wants to see what kind of shape McFarland is in after last year's torn patella tendon. Even with Hollis Thomas out, the Saints believe they have plenty of depth. Sun, Aug 17, 2008 12:06:00 PM

Date:

Free agent DL Anthony McFarland will hold a private workout for NFL teams on June 4.

Booger will try to show he's recovered from a torn patellar tendon that kept him out all last year. He nearly signed with the Steelers in late March, and since the team didn't address its line in the draft, could still end up there.

The agent for DL Anthony McFarland believes his client may still end up signing with the Steelers.

The lack of urgency on Pittsburgh's part is due to McFarland's knee being only about 70 percent right now with a ways to go before football activity. Last month's visit was positive, however, and "it's definitely a possibility that he could be in a Steelers' uniform."

The Steelers have elected not to sign DL Anthony McFarland, according to the Beaver County Times.

The sides agreed to terms Tuesday, but the team opted not to sign Booger after putting him through a workout. McFarland is recovering from a patellar tendon tear, so it's no surprise that he'd look unimpressive physically.

Steelers agreed to terms with DT Anthony McFarland, formerly of the Colts.

It's a little surprising Booger passed a physical considering he's coming off a torn patellar tendon and isn't expected to be ready for Week 1. McFarland has very little experience in a 3-4, but could help in a rotation at defensive end. He isn't a threat to Brett Keisel or Aaron Smith's starting jobs.

Free agent DT Anthony McFarland is visiting the Steelers on Tuesday.

McFarland, who spent last season on injured reserve with a knee injury, was released by the Colts last month after failing a physical. He played under Steelers coach Mike Tomlin in Tampa Bay, but likely wouldn't be ready for the start of the season. The Steelers are deep at tackle, so McFarland is probably viewed as an inexpensive insurance policy.

Colts released DT Anthony "Booger" McFarland and LB Rob Morris.

Both failed physicals. McFarland tore his patellar tendon last August and would've been a question mark for Week 1, let alone camp. The Colts cleared $6.85 million in cap room by releasing him. It's uncertain if Booger is capable of making an impact again. Morris is rehabbing a torn ACL. He could return for less money in 2008, but at 33 isn't a sure bet to find a taker.

Colts placed DT Anthony McFarland on injured reserve with a torn patellar tendon, ending his season.

The Colts considered keeping McFarland on the active roster in case he could make it back for the Super Bowl, but will now focus on having him ready for next season. However, his base salary for 2008 is a whopping $6.85 million, so if he's not fully recovered, Booger could be cut in the offseason.

Colts DT Anthony McFarland had surgery on his patella tendon Tuesday.

The Colts gambled when Dallas Clark tore his ACL around Week 8 of '06, but kept him on the active roster for the rest of the season. They'll try to do the same with McFarland although surgery makes his outlook less positive.

Colts head coach Tony Dungy confirmed Monday that DT Anthony McFarland's injury is a "long-term" situation.

Dungy said Booger suffered an injury to his patellar tendon during practice last week. He wouldn't confirm whether McFarland will be placed on I.R.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Colts DT Anthony McFarland will miss the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Colts should again be an excellent matchup for opposing running backs. Booger isn't the dominant force he once was, but was a starter and key force against the run. The Colts need rookie Quinn Pitcock, who's currently nursing an injured knee, to step up and be effective immediately.

Colts DT Anthony McFarland will undergo an MRI for an undisclosed injury.

The Colts aren't saying much, but Profootballtalk.com hears Booger could be out for the season. This news comes in the wake of Corey Simon's release.

The Seahawks attempted to acquire Anthony McFarland before he was dealt to Indianapolis.

Seattle GM Tim Ruskell was in Tampa when they drafted "Booger", but he didn't want to give up a second-round pick. Due to Montae Reagor's possibly season-ending injury, McFarland has moved into the starting lineup for Indianapolis. The trade now seems very favorable for the Colts.

Colts acquired DT Anthony "Booger" McFarland from the Bucs for a second-round draft pick.

Nice job by Tampa to get a high pick for a player who wasn't enjoying a great season. Still, McFarland is a 29-year-old play who has been a quality run-stopper in the Tampa 2 defense for years. That's just what the Colts need, but they've paid a high price for McFarland and deposed DT Corey Simon.

The Bucs are reportedly dangling DT Anthony McFarland in trade talks.

Injured CB Brian Kelly is also available, according to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer. Tampa is said to be looking for a first-day pick in exchange for McFarland, which might be asking too much for the underachiever.
