Steelers released CB Bryant McFadden and WR Arnaz Battle.
Combined, the moves give the cap-strapped Steelers $3,537,500 more to work with in terms of base salary. McFadden, 30, plummeted down the depth chart in 2011, falling behind Ike Taylor, William Gay, and Keenan Lewis. He could resurface as a nickel or dime back elsewhere, but has been picked on frequently in recent seasons. The 32-year-old Battle was only a special teams player. Wed, Feb 8, 2012 04:04:00 PM

Bryant McFadden has lost his starting left cornerback job.

McFadden has practiced for three weeks and his hamstring injury is no longer an issue, but he's still being replaced by William Gay and Keenan Lewis. Pittsburgh's 157.5 passing yards per game leads the NFL, so McFadden won't be getting his job back any time soon.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden (hamstring) has been ruled out for Week 4.

William Gay will draw another start, with Keenan Lewis sending him to the slot in nickel packages. The Texans' aerial attack will represent a stiffer test than the Colts did last week.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden's (hamstring) status is in doubt for Week 2.

McFadden is officially questionable, but the Steelers are strongly considering going with either Keenan Lewis or William Gay opposite Ike Taylor after McFadden practiced "sparingly" on Friday. McFadden missed the entire preseason with a groin injury before coming down with his hamstring ailment.

Bryant McFadden could be the "odd man out" at cornerback with the Steelers.

McFadden is a known mediocrity whereas 2009 third-rounder Keenan Lewis could step in at left cornerback and show improvement throughout the season. The Steelers are also leery of losing young CBs such as Crezdon Butler and Cortez Allen, leaving McFadden's $2.5 million salary as a factor.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden left the Super Bowl late in the first quarter with a hip injury.

The Packers started the game by targeting McFadden, but this would still be a big injury for the Steelers. It could force special teamer Anthony Madison into the game against Green Bay's three-wide base offense. McFadden is questionable to return.

Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton expects LCB Bryant McFadden (abdominal) to be 100 percent by Sunday.

"He's fine," said Horton. "He's had three weeks to get over it." McFadden's return will push William Gay back into the slot, where he belongs. The Steelers secondary should be in better shape than it's been since November.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden (abdominal) is active for Sunday's game against the Jets.

McFadden is ready to go and expected to be on Braylon Edwards, who burned him for 100 yards on eight catches in Week 15. Meanwhile, DE Aaron Smith (triceps) is out again, as expected. Red-hot Ziggy Hood draws the start. Other Steelers inactives: S Will Allen, CB Crezdon Butler, OL Chris Scott, QB Charlie Batch, OL Tony Hills, DL Scott McLendon and RB Jonathan Dwyer.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden (abdominal strain) is expected to cover Braylon Edwards on Sunday.

McFadden is listed as questionable after suffering a strain in last week's Divisional Round game, though he's expected to play. If McFadden suffers an in-game setback, third cornerback William Gay would be responsible for covering Edwards, a matchup the Jets would look to exploit. Edwards already racked up eight catches and 100 yards against a healthy McFadden in Week 15.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden (abdominal strain) is expected to play Sunday against the Jets.

McFadden and SS Troy Polamalu (Achilles) will both be limited in practice this week, but coach Mike Tomlin is fully counting on them to play. McFadden's availability will keep special teamer Anthony Madison on the bench in three-wide sets, which is great news for Steelers fans.

The Steelers are currently unsure of LCB Bryant McFadden's status for the AFC Championship game after he left Pittsburgh's win over the Ravens on Saturday with a hip injury.

"We will see where we go as the week goes on," were head coach Mike Tomlin's only words on the matter on Saturday night. If McFadden is unable to give it a go next weekend, William Gay will most likely slide over to left corner, while Anthony Madison will play nickelback. Plagued by hip injuries throughout the season's final weeks, McFadden should initially be considered doubtful for next Sunday.

Steelers LCB Bryant McFadden left Saturday's playoff game with a hip injury.

He's questionable to return. It's worth noting that McFadden dealt with nagging hip problems late in the year. Though far from a shutdown corner, his absence has forced special teamer Anthony Madison to play defense extensively.

Bryant McFadden left Thursday's game in the second quarter with a hip injury.

McFadden exited after making a nice play on an interception. He returned to the game later in the second quarter.

Steelers CB Bryant McFadden leads the NFL with 66 receptions allowed in coverage.

Pittsburgh's secondary has been their achilles heel on defense, and McFadden is one of the primary reasons why. With the Steel Curtain's top-ranked rush defense stifling opponents to the tune of 2.9 YPC and just four rushing TDs, opposing offenses have been forced to go pass-happy in order to move the chains on the Steelers. McFadden's job appears to be safe, and he's listed as our No. 31 DB in our IDP rankings.

Coach Mike Tomlin said that the battle between Bryant McFadden and Keenan Lewis to start at left corner is still ongoing.

Tomlin declined to name a starter for Saturday's second exhibition game. McFadden appears to have his nose in front after starting against the Lions last week, but Lewis is "showing that he's maybe prepared to take the next step," according to Tomlin. We expect McFadden to win out in the end.
